This is an excellent video! I’ve been fishing for trout so long that I don’t need multiple mini jig setups-just one rod per technique I use an Abu Garcia Zenon Light, which is a bass light-action rod, and it handles everything I throw at it, from mini jigs to jerk baits-it gets the job done. Sure, it’s a bit stiff, but when I don’t get a bite on the first cast, I’m constantly switching between the lightest 1/80 oz to a 1/4 oz for bigger stuff, and I’m absolutely smacking trout right in the mouth. For bait-and-wait, I’ve got a cheaper setup, and my fly setup is on par with my spinning setup, giving me top-notch control for casting lures and fighting fish.
This is so reassuring to me to hear that the trout are inconsistent in during the California winter. For the longest time I just assumed my inconsistent catch rates was just due to user error on my part. I fish the bay area and have used many of your tips with success (6 rainbows on one day) but then skunked on other days using the same lures and techniques. Your explanation about the unstable weather temperatures makes so much sense now. It sounds like the warmer days during the winter might be more productive?
New to stock fishing. Son wanted to start so we have been going out the last month. Mostly Prado. Haven’t been hooking on lately. Been watching your channel and finally started hooking up. Your vids are very insightful. Haven’t caught anything on drop shot. Tried different types of minnows and mouse tails and nothing. Bait and wait finally got us couple on live worms and pink mouse tails. But after watching this video, I think we have been casting too far. 😂
Thanks for all of the info. So rare these days to have someone share so much info. I have been looking for the Shakespeare 7'6" you have mentioned in other videos, to use an extra bait rod but can't find it anywhere. Was it discontinued? Only find the 7'.
When I used to fish for stocker trout thirty years ago when I lived in Denver I used to use either red power bait balls or paste I forget what color. My biggest wild trout I caught was using liver for catfish in the Platte River as the sun was going down. I haven't fished for trout since then. I'm a catfish and carp fisherman sometimes I go musky fishing.
Rob on inserting the hook on the devil tail you start the hook insert on the side. Is that better then inserting the hook from the middle of the face of the devil tail ?
I tend to like hooking the side instead of the middle. Sometimes if you go through the middle when the fish hits it may pull the head of the devil tail down obstructing the hook.
After I left SoCal fishing up here in WA is soooooo different as far as methods and baits. Still fun to hook up on stockers but im really enjoying taking my boat out on lakes here and fishing the river banks.

@@wtfmomentinURBED1thats been the #1 lure for the past 2 seasons, flies, nypmhs, if your fishing(pulling ) from a river , creek , your not doing anything special. Yes I do salt water fishing also.

Is there a trick with bait n wait to not have the fish swallow the bait each time for catch and release?
Not really with the Carolina rig. Fishing bait under a bobber does help prevent the fish from swallowing the hook sometimes but theres no guarantees.
