I was about to fight you on Sound of Music but then I realized... I'd probably never go to a production of it. I just love the movie because Julie Andrews is a beam of sunshine personified ❤
IWhile Julie is a ray of sunshine and the movie is fun, The stage show makes the Natzi invasion and why theyre escaping more apparent. When I was a kid it was like "why did they run away after their show?" I just thought they were going to miss the bus for their mountain vacation or something.
Totally respect your opinion, but I liked Matilda, Hello Dolly!, The Lion King, and The Sound of Music... I guess that's the child-like part of myself.
I saw calendar girls yesterday in Sheffield and I thought it was so good. The cast were amazing, the songs were great, so empowering at the end. The real calendar girls were there on the night too. Think it was a slightly different version because some of the stuff she said didn't happen in mine
Edit- it has not passed the test of time haha it was fun at the time but I haven't listened to any of the music since and I'd definitely not class it as one of my faves
OMG you didnt know frozen was coming? oh yes .....Let it Go will be making another go around to drive us all mad. Mainly cuz there will always be that one little queen that thinks his comment of "just Let it Go" was his brilliant comeback
My least favorite has gotta be Love Never Dies, the Phantom of the Opera sequel. I'm a big Phantom fan, and the story line really bugged me. There were a few good songs, but I just wasn't impressed by it :P
I just saw it on it’s national tour on Saturday and it was executed VERY WELL. Costumes, set, and actors were awesome! But the plot and characterization itself is not original and just makes it feel like a silly soap opera. I mean, raoul and Erik’s petty argument over Christine song?? Christine felt like property in it rather than her own person. I predicted the ending! You shouldn’t be able to do that with Phantom stuff haha. The performers performed the numbers very well, but the songs themselves aren’t very interesting. So I agree. It’s probably one of my least favorites as well
Mama Mia had fun music, but the plot was empty. I also didn't like grease. I only saw the movie versions of both, but again, no plot. A few plot holes I couldn't get over, like did they not mention what school they go to over the summer? And the music just didn't capture me like it should.
Etta Jurima I've seen the movie adaptation "Mamma Mia!". It was AWFUL! The plot was paper thin, the acting was average at best, and most of the songs were poorly sung. My mother saw most of the movie with me when we saw it on HBO. She was so uncomfortable with the bad musical numbers. She was cringing so hard at the "Lay All Your Love On Me" part. Why the hell was a sequel made?
I just realized I like the aesthetic and music of Mamma Mia, but not the plot. I use to think it was my favorite musical of all time but now that I really think about it, I just love the idea of a beautiful place with fun catchy music.
I really wouldn't recommend the book then. The book's long and VERY detailed. Buuut I love Victor Hugo's works and honestly my writing style isn't very to the point either. Les mis is great but it will take forever to read.
I adore Matilda because I think Tim Minchin is one of the most talented comedians/musicians ever! I saw it in Stratford Upon Avon before it came to the west end and I’ve seen it another two times since. Its Stratford Upon Avon cast was actually way better than the West End cast. I respect your opinion though. I totally agree that School Song is one of the best songs in the show, it’s so so clever!
Amy Lovatt oh my you commented I'm quite surprised but don't worry I forgive you it's just mamma Mia is my favorit musical it holds sentimental value but I understand Also have a nice day
I am sick of Disney turning their movies into stage musicals. So many original writers, but Disney has mega dollars to turn their animated films into stage musicals, and don't get me started on the live action remakes.
the hunchback of notre dame was adapted into a musical. if you haven't heard it or seen it, look it up on yt. it's really well-produced and the songs from both the disney film version and the added one were magnificent.
I don't really have an opinion of sherk. I don't hate shrek but it was never a childhood favorite. (Movie I didn't listen to the musical) Edit: I listen to almost the entire musical and hahahahaha it's ao funny hahahahaha. Didn't like the movie but I enjoyed this a lot hahahahaha
Amy dislikes a musical? What world are we living in? Lol. I respect your opinions and always will. I personally don't like Shrek the Musical or Spongebob the Musical because I simply don't like the story of either one. , well from what over seen so far. I'm not against the music, I just don't like the story in musical form, movie form, or show form. Ok, I just don't like the shows or movies. I do have to admit that the Spongebob Musical does have some good songs though. And I can't really have a real opinion because I haven't dove into many musicals yet.
FoxWolf 273 i really liked the official broadway recording of shrek but when i saw it myself it was really disappointing! and i can’t really imagine spongebob the musical ahaha
I do like Shrek The Musical, but I love Spongebob the musical. I am glad that you are not against the music though because, in my opinion, the music is amazing in Spongebob the musical. I can understand why you don't like the plot. I love it, but I can see why you don't like it.
There's a Spongebob musical? What am I saying, of course there is. I also don't really like the Shrek musical, although I do like the trio of Fionas in act 1.
An unpopular opinion: I don’t like Hamilton. The music is amazing but there are many fans that annoy me shipping characters galore and when I listen to the songs it just ruins it for me
aleksandrasteff how did you find out about the shipping and all that may I ask? I like Hamilton but I just avoid the 'fandom' altogether if I'm not a huge fan of it, since I know something will ruin it for me.
Lol it thouroghly annoys me to no end why I can never understand how a fandom ruins a show, I guess I’m more head on and find it easier to separate the show from its fandom.
AMY! I'd love to hear your review of The Greatest Showman. My current favourite movie. I've seen it in theaters twice now. I'm in love with the sound track.
I feel the exact same way about mama-mia, except I do occasionally listen to it. Also I love Hello Dolly and The Sound of Music, but I absolutely respect your opinion, and do understand that they can come off as childish and gimmicky.
People shall kill me for this, but, I'm not so keen on BMC. Sorry! The only 2 songs I like are Michael in the Bathroom and A Guy That I'd Kinda Be Into. I am glad that Spongebob and Shrek and School of rock arn't on that list because I love all 3. Especially Spongebob the musical because it is so good!
I prefer the mama mia movie over the musical, same with Matilda. I like to stick to classics like phantom of the opera or chicago and the great comet of 1812 and some of the newer ones like hamilton are really introducing the new generation to some hella good musicals.
please don't hate me; I don't like be more chill. I like some of the songs and I'll happily sing along if they're on but I dislike the plot and the characters
same for me but with heathers :/ i don't know why but the story made me cringe so hard I couldn't even finish listening to the album... even though there are some quite good songs there
We usually have very similar tastes and I was floored that lion king was on the list... it is one of my all time faves, but I get it. Part of my love for the show is childhood nostalgia, but I also love the colors, the creativity of the costume designs, and the music (he lives in you is a fave). Different strokes for different folks I guess. On a separate note, Shrek the musical is cursed (except for “I know it’s today” I’ve blocked the rest of it from my memory)
I really don't like Mamma Mia don't get me wrong I have nothing against the people who worked on the musical I great respect on the people who worked on it
Hey Amy, I have a point on the score of Sweet Charity. The score is meant to emphasis how lost Charity feels in the big city of New York in the 60s. The songs all have different styles to reflect the different places and cultures Charity faces and how out of place she is in all of them. Big Spender is the night club culture, Rhythm of Life is the Hippie Culture, Rich Man's Frug is the rich elite, and Charity doesn't fit in with any of them. It also signifies how Charity is a tragic character who's life has no direction. I don't know if that clears up anything but that's what they were going for.
You're welcome. I did Sweet Charity ten years ago and the music director explained that to us when we were rehearsing and it kinda stuck with me. I love your show, keep up the good work.
How To Succeed is definitely not the best musical ever, but it is REALLY fun to be in! I was in the ensemble in my high school's production (as well as being the understudy to Rosemary, the female lead who sings Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm) and it was so cool! The dance for Coffee Break was hilarious and it was fun to work on characterization in it. However, had my school not done H2S, I would have never listened to it (I almost didn't audition). It's not the type of show I normally like, but it's grown a special place in my heart.
Just wondering, have you seen Lion King on Broadway? I would've agreed before I saw it, but then I saw it and completely blew me away. Still entitled to your opinion if you have, I was just wondering where you're coming from.
I was just Mufasa and before I auditioned I felt the same way but now I disagree if u really take a look at lion king and break down the characters and the story it really tells an amazing story of life
I don’t really like the plot of Spongebob the Musical, but I don’t mind the music. I think that it has an excellent cast, but the plot just isn’t that good.🤷🏽♀️
One musical I tried really hard to get into but just couldn't was Rent... I got through the first act but I just thought it was so boring and I didn't like any of the characters :/ some of the songs are good though, like Light My Candle and Take Me or Leave Me. Also Love Never Dies, I hate what was done to all of the characters because I love Phantom so much, but all of the songs in that musical are amazing
My main problem with rent is the characters. Mainly Mark. Mark annoys the hell out of me i never understood why people liked him so much. The only characters i actually liked were Roger, Joanne, And Angel. Collins is somewhat okay but he gets a side eye from me due to some of his actions
I don’t like rent anymore as much as show not because it bores me but more so i just dont like the characters and I don’t think it really says that much. But i do think that the representation it brought is amazing and i understand as a gay man myself while lgbtq people love it so much.
unpopular opinion: i love the story of be more chill, i read the book and adored it, but i am not a fan of the music at all. michael in the bathroom is really the only song i can tolerate.. christine and jeremy’s voices make me mad
Well, with Jermemy and Chrisitine I find you can simply listen to their voices and the way they sing, and then get an idea of what they're characters are like. Which is awesome! But there's definetly better singers out there.
linni X yeah, i agree with that. i think that the tone you sing with is important for giving people a feel of the character. what i meant by my comment was that i’m not exactly a fan of some of the techniques they use while singing (like that thing christine does at the end of lines where she makes it sound breathier and more high pitched? what’s with that)
:0c this is interesting bc I feel like. The exact opposite? I love the music but the plot just does Not do it for me at all. (Actually just personally the plot seems interesting but I don't think the musical executes it well. At all.)
I just love people like her- those who say their opinion respectfully and don’t attack people who actually like those musicals. I love you sm you have great videos!
And holy hell, I love mamma Mia. For me, it’s a mother/daughter musical. Me and my mom are seeing mamma Mia: here we go again when it comes out in cinemas
To be fair, it does remind me a lot of my mum. We used to sing slipping through my fingers together all the time and I will definitely be seeing the movie when it comes out - just not one of my favourites.
Totally agree with you about Matilda! But my least favourite show is Jamie, there isn’t a single memorable song and I spent the entire time thinking Jamie was a total brat. Not sure how I was supposed to root for him!
I’ve said this before, but I feel Hamilton is very overhyped. Another one I dislike is Once Upon A Mattress... our director picked it for our school show this year and nobody is happy with it :/
I wouldn't call people feeling highly about it overhyped It really is amazing to a lot of people, Not everyone will feel the same ofc but idk about calling things overhyped
Ugh, overrated and overhyped are just annoying words for me. I guess it might be more the word than the person using them, but I feel like they don’t really mean anything. How is it possible for Too many people to like something. I don’t really understand that feeling. I’ve been in situations where I didn’t like a show that many other people love, but it never really annoys me at all. You can just get straight to the point with, I don’t like this show, when you say “overhyped” or “overated” it feels like it’s directed more to the fans of the show, and pointing out why you don’t like the fact that so many people like this show doesn’t really make anybody stop liking it. I think the best comments I’ve seen are breaking down why exactly they don’t like a show, rather than pointing out the fact that it has too much fans. Well, sorry for my little mini rant lol
I went to see The Girls in Leeds on its first run and absolutely loved it, and the soundtrack is one of my absolute favourites! Isn't it funny how people take completely different things from musicals. The Girls just blows me away, I think it's just incredible!
I saw an autism friendly performance of The Lion King with my family. I thought it felt way too slow and some of the dialogue and script were irrelevant to the plot. In my personal opinion, act two dragged on too much. It's a visual spectacle and quite a few of the songs were catchy but a few of the songs were just not memorable at all for me.
Trixiah Gaming this is an honest, curious question, but what makes a performance autism friendly? I’d love to know, it sounds rather interesting. I hope this didn’t come across rude.
They tend to turn down the volume of the microphones and make the music quieter. The lights in the auditorium remain on during the performance but are dim and not fully out. When people find the performance too overwhelming, they can chill out in the foyer for a while. At quite a few autism friendly performances, before the show, they introduce any actors that play characters that might seem threatening or frightening or the entire cast briefly. In some cases, fiddle toys are sometimes given out so people can fidget. Strobe lighting is cut out from the performance as well. Also, some lights are toned down too. Any essential parts of the show remain the same and the script isn't changed though fortunately.
Trixiah Gaming oh that’s super cool, I’m happy they have that for autistic guests. Now that i think about it i can definitely see how some elements of the shows can be a lot to handle, especially the sound being really loud. Thank you for letting me know!
I actually audibly gasped when you said Hello Dolly, How to Succeed, and The Sound of Music. And you mentioned in another video that you don’t like Guys and Dolls. I’d be curious to know if there are any Golden Age musicals that you do like. Of course I know that not everyone likes everything, but it just kind of breaks my heart to think of a fellow theatre nerd not liking any of the classic old shows. Please tell me that there are at least a couple that you enjoy.
Matilda: I agree completely. Mama Mia: I have never seen or heard, but it has never really interested me. The Girls: Honestly, I have never even heard of it. Now knowing what it is about, I do not think I am interested at all. It's kinda weird sounding and just...messy looking? 42nd street: I also agree with, though I have only seen/heard bits and pieces of it. Bad Girls: Never seen or heard it, but about you putting it on better? I, honestly, find that the case with a lot of shows I have seen. Sweet Charity: Never heard of it. Hello, Dolly!: I have to agree with you and disagree at the same time. I enjoy the movie and some of the songs, but I would not personally sit down and be like "oh, I want to watch/go see this!", but if I had to/my friend wanted to, I would. It's enjoyable, but not a preference of mine. HTSIB(WRT): I like maybe two songs in it and I think the only reasons are because Darren and Daniel. The Sound of Music: I AGREE, THANK YOU. People are always like "WHAT?!?!?" and I am just like "...I...don't...enjoy it......", but I like a song or two, but I have to be in the mood or whatever. The Lion King: Honestly, I just prefer the movie better than the musical. It's a great show, but it is not my thing, really. Congrats on 15K, by the way :)
Ok so these aren't shows I hate (because I don't hate any shows) but I'm just really meh about them: 1. Waitress- the story is beautiful and I like some of the songs but it's just not my cup of tea. I wish i liked it as mucb as everyonr does. 2. In the Heights- I liked this musical, but let's just say if I was in NYC and it was on I wouldn't see it. There are definitely some ama az i n g songs (breathe, paciencia y fe, 96000 for example) but i just don't find it that fascinating. 3. Charlie and the chocolate factory- the songs are good but I just feel like it's a very kid show , not that there's anything wrong with that, i actually don't think the musical is at fault so much as I'm not a big fan of roald dahl (i used to love his books when i was little but now... ehh). But i mean. Christian borle
I have to agree with your number 3 choice. As for number 1, seeing it live really enhances the show. Waitress wouldn't have been something I'd enjoy, but I really enjoyed it after I saw it.
I agree with Waitress and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but personally I l o v e In the Heights. If it were on Broadway and I were in New York, that would be the first thing I did. But your opinion is totally valid too.
I agree with most of these except the Lion King. I literally frickin love the movie and the musical. I also am in the play in my middle school. That might be why I prefer it. Edit: If anyone was wondering, I'm playing Timon! (He is my favorite, that's why I auditioned for him)
@@Liv-oe2iu Me too. I listened to Hamilton beforehand but Heathers was the first musical I listened to as I was actually getting into musicals so it has sentimental value for me plus I love the songs.
my school is doing 42nd street this year and it kinda bugs me because, like you said, the story is meh and my school is known for its drama department. i run lights and im just not enthused.
I don't really like Shrek The Musical tbh (funny bc I'm in in currently lol). Like, some of the songs I adore, like Who I'd Be, Believer, Freak Flag, and Story of My Life, but the problem is I've always hated Shrek as a child, so that ruins it for me. (Although in our production, our Shrek is a good friend of mine and he does an amazing job). Also Dear Evan Hansen. I thought it was a lil too sad for my liking. The topic of the Musical was really heavy and not something I can often listen to.
Lyss totally see where you are coming from with Dear Evan Hansen even though I love DEH with all my heart. I felt the same way whenever I first watched a bootleg of the original Broadway cast of Next to Normal a few years ago which shares a lot of similar themes as DEH. It just felt far too depressing for my liking at that time (especially cause it was like 15 when I watched it and I had a hard time relating to the story) and I got like halfway through the second act and it still wasn’t doing it for me. Which is a shame cause I love Aaron Tveit and Jennifer Damiano. But the show did eventually grow on me the older I got. But it was weird I didn’t enjoy it cause i was also a huge fan of Spring Awakening at the time and that also deals with very dark and mature themes but I just couldn’t get into Next to Normal for whatever reason.
I think for me I look at Shreck as "That was a really good show, considering that it's a stage musical of Shreck" The score is great and it had some great talent but I am with ya on the not a huge Shreck movie fan and so it's blah.
I recently had to sit through a production of Shreck that was so painfully bad I wanted to shoot myself. Im not saying that because i didnt get a call back (which i should, just saying) OMG it was so horrible though. I was so glad I wasn't in it. They had nice bilboards though. I also like the donkey pot pie song better than the one that is in it now.
Brett Mastema I prefer Forever over the pot pie one personally, but maybe that's because the girl who sang it at our production absolutely blew it out of the park.
Oh man, 42nd Street! That's one of my favorite shows and my dream role is Peggy Sawyer lol. I definitely agree with you that the story isn't amazing, but the dancing is what does it for me. Hello Dolly I have mixed feelings about. We did it when I was in school and I did a lot of work choreography wise on it that was really fun, but was not treated well by the cast of the show, so that made it not a great experience. The music just gets stuck in my head! I saw it with Bette Midler on Broadway (my friend is playing Rudolph, the head waiter) and it was honestly breathtaking. And the performance they did on the Tonys was so bad! They should have done one of the bigger and more impressive numbers.
I really don't understand why they did that performance for the Tonys... it just seems like such a random choice for Bette to then win and her to not have even performed.
I'm not the Biggest fan of Hello Dolly but I think they were originally planning to do another number for the Tonys. However, the set was considered too big so they had to do something else instead.
I’ve seen the lion king! I personally loved it, but that’s the only “Real Musical” I’ve ever seen, so it might be that I just don’t know of better... Though I have to admit, it was BREATHTAKING!!! ❤️
I personally am not really into the music of Pasek and Paul (I know. I KNOW) and while I know they’re really talented and what they’re doing for the theatre community right now is really awesome, but I just get bored? Idk. and I usually can get down with a more pop sounding musical score even though it’s not really my fave musical theatre genre (I’m big into oldies and more musically complex scores and more eclectic stuff), but their music generally “just doesn’t do it for me” 😂
Completely respect that opinion. I think I like all their stuff because it is all pretty similar, like you can always tell a Pasek and Paul song I think! I totally get people not liking them though!
My favorite work of theirs is tragically their least popular- Dogfight! If you haven’t listened to it, I do recommend it as I personally think it’s their best work as it is the most different from their current stuff (but still has a distinct enough Pasek and Paul sound without it being overbearing, if that makes sense!)
I liked their songs on La La Land, haven’t listened to The Greatest Showman, and I don’t really like Dear Evan Hansen, like you said I find it kinda boring
That Sound Of Music one hit me hard ahaha. I love it so much that I asked my parents if I could go and see the stage production as a “well done” after I passed my GCSEs ahaha
I saw Hello, Dolly! on Broadway with Bernadette Peters back in May and I loved it. The humor was well-placed, the choreography, costumes, and set design were incredible. I guess one of the main reasons I enjoyed it was because it was my first Broadway show, but I respect your opinions! (Unpopular opinion: I'm not the biggest fan of Newsies, just felt like the soundtrack wasnt much, but I'm seeing it at the movie theatre later this month so that might be better.)
I totally agree with you, re: the Hello Dolly movie, which I quite loathed. Didn't see the fuss. Then I saw the revival this year on tour and it was one of my favorite shows of the year, almost solely for how gorgeous the costumes, sets, and lighting were. It has a lot of weak songs, but several really strong ones, and I was pretty shocked how much I liked it. So I think it's a case where the production can make it work? Having seen it, I'm like... retroactively and pointlessly mad at the horrifically bad casting of the movie! Streisand was too young by at least 20 years!
My least favorite musicals: A lot of y’all are gonna want to kill me after reading the last two I’m sorry -Cats (no plot. no character development. makes no sense. it’s just cats in an alley) -Grease (music is annoying as hell) -Amelie (probably spelled that wrong. boring. very boring. I love Phillipa Soo but yikes) -Heathers (I love the music and it’s a very fun show, but the overhype kills it. It’s not as good as some fans make it out to be. movie is sooooo much better) -Great Comet (the music just didn’t do it for me. story and characters didn’t interest me at all)
1. Cats is amazing if you see it live, the dancing especially is amazing, but yeah the plot is nonexistent 2. Grease- agreed 3. Amelie- uhh, it’s so boring! 4. Heathers- i don’t think it’s anything revolutionary and the music is fun to sing along or listen to, but it’s soooo overhyped 5. Great comet- I like the instrumental music and the plot, but the lyrics frustrate me so much! It seems like it was just lazily thrown together, and they’re just reading from the book with music in the background!
I love Matilda, Mamma Mia, Hello Dolly!, The Lion King and the Sound of Music but maybe thats because I am still a child, only a freshman in high school so i do like child shows. By the way, My high school just did a production of Mystery of Edwin Drood which is a really good musical about an unfinished book. The audience decides the ending. So fun.
Kind of related, but I just started listening to the Phantom of the Opera, and I thought I would hate it (please don't come for me). Because I just like the hidden gems of musical theatre, including spring awakening cut songs. Loving it! Going to try to convince my mom to get us tickets to see it at the Fox, cause it's one of her favorites too!
I think Les Mis has it beat, though not by much. When I think of all the amazing actors who have passed through both shows.....WOW! Incredible talents!
I LOVE Sound of Music, it's my second favourite musical after Grease... But I respect your opinion! Not everyone likes the same musicals! What a boring world that would be :)
"Matilda" came out around the same time as "Spring Awakening", and I noticed the kids in Matilda were doing some poses identical to the teens in "Spring Awakening". (There was a boy who sang while sitting in a chair, holding a microphone and tilting his head all the way up. just like in that "B%tch of a Living " song.)
I actually agree with your opinion about 42nd street! All of my friends I tell say, “Oh my gosh, why?! 42nd is amazing!” And I agree with them, it’s very well made! And I amazingly love dance-oriented shows too (most people I know can tell from my love of Newsies, Hamilton and Fiddler on The Roof, which have really good dances), but I’m still more of a person who likes musicals more for their story rather than the dance. Another reason why I like Fiddler, Hamilton and Newsies so much is because they keep the story going while entertaining you with the dances at the same time. But, I just don’t know why... I always thought the story for 42nd street was a little... boring? I don’t know.. ;
My sister was in a production of 42nd street that was at a local theatre in our town and I couldn’t grasp onto the story very well. I just wasn’t really into the story line but the choreography was brilliant!
Props to you for being honest Amy. If anyone gets mad at you for it or insulted, ignore them. They obviously don't get it. Me, personally, being 25 (as you may already remember- but there are so many others who comment here XD), but a lover of Disney, I actually REALLY loved The Lion King. It was the first ever musical I went to see, and in hindsight, perhaps that is why. Being my first venture into musicals, at the age of 17/18ish, perhaps the easieness and 'kidiness' of it appealed to me, not requiring as much brain power as some of the more in-depth, adult shows. It's an interesting idea that you made me think on, because similarly, the second musical I ever went to see was Mamma Mia. XD 2 for 2 of the not your favourites. :P Also enjoyable, but then I've always been a fan of ABBA, so there's that too. Perhaps the... general 'meh' of the shows, appealed to me because of my lack of experience with the musical world? Food for thought. It's a pity about the Calander Girls one, as I LOVE that movie so much, and its a pity that they potentially lost the power the great, classic actresses did in the movie so beautifully. But oh well. So few can match Helen Mirren and Julie Walters when they hit their stride. (On a side note, I also love The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Just a movie, not a musical, but also great actors and actresses of the same calibre. Definitely worth a look if you haven't seen it).
I really enjoyed reading this and thank you so much for sharing your experiences. I definitely want to watch The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel as I have heard amazing things about it!!
im gonna get tons of hate but dear evan hansen is actually a musical i didn't exactly enjoy. everything about it is great except the music. theres some good songs like so big so small, and you will be found but its just not really my show. Mike faist is pretty great tho, love him
I don't like Dear Evan Hansen, Heathers, everything she listed on the list, and basically most of them that I've listened to. Hamilton is my musical that I will always stand by. I don't like Legally Blonde, even though all my friends love it. Also, random thing, but don't you feel like the "Big 3" musicals are Hamilton, Heathers, and Dear Evan Hansen?
I can totally understand not liking shows with a more "childish" theme. I've seen Matilda, Lion King, Mean Girls, Be More Chill, a production of Heathers, and Shrek (tbh don't really remember that one I was like 4) and I enjoyed all of them! I'm going to be seeing Waitress in August, so it really depends on what kind of mood I'm in.
I personally dislike 42nd Street purely for the fact I was in it last year in the ensemble. Thing is we had the pure definition of Production Hell. We had a new music teacher and she and our director couldn't go a single rehershal after fighting. Dancing was horrible by having high schoolers doing professional tap dance move when most of us have zero tap dancing experience. We had to have two separate Saturday rehershal just for dancing. We also learned stuff during Tech Week including staging for Lullaby of Broadway, the ending dance number, and the night before the first performance the girls learned that we were going to have to sing in Shuffle of to Buffalo offstage. It was so bad one night we went to 11 o'clock at night. Our school starts at 7 am and we're high schoolers! Despite it being almost a full year later I still can't listen to the songs with put flashing back to that craziness. The only good part was it became an inside joke between everyone who was in it. I know I went on for a bit but I just had to express why I don't like this show.
Actually, Matilda the Musical is based on the Roald Dahl novel of the same name. The film was also based on it, but the musical is not an adaptation of the movie.
The only musicals I've ever disliked are: Cats - I actually wanted to leave after the first act, but my mom wouldn't let me :( Urinetown - although it was a high school production, so take it with a grain of salt Spring Awakening is meh. I think it's overrated.
Spring awakening has been a huge part of my life for so many years so you’re opinion is hard for me to hear, but I can respect it cause I get that musicals covering that subject matter aren’t for everyone.
to be honest i didn’t think i liked hello dolly either but then i saw bette midler in it on broadway and OH MY GOD I WAS BLOWN AWAY!!! i think it really depends on the production value as opposed to the story
This isn't a theatre show, but it's still a musical, so I suppose it counts I couldn't really get into Moulin Rouge, I liked the Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend and Material Girl crossover song, but that was it. I felt like it had loads of potential and the aesthetics and costumes and idea of it being set in the Moulin Rouge were all great, but I really just couldn't get into it and I just didn't enjoy it.
Do you know, I was very similar when I first saw it but then I watched it like 5 times and I love it now haha! I think it reminds me of being at school and singing the songs with friends so it feels nice but I DEFINITELY get people not liking it!
oh my god i was in a production of les misérables at my local theatre and our director had to ban mamma mia because people were singing songs from it non stop! i played gavroche in the show and it was weird since i'm a teenage girl haha
Matilda The Musical pretty much follows the plot of the book exactly, so I guess you don't like the book then. (Just kidding, I don't care that you don't like it that much. I probably enjoy the songs more than the whole show, even though I do like the show.
I read the book and loved it so much when I was a kid - maybe I had just forgotten the story as I've seen the movie so many times but not read the book in probably about 15 years!
I love Matilda. But I think a lot of that is connected to how it was the first musical I saw live, and the first one I ever got into. So it’s very special to me. If I hadn’t seen it I don’t think I ever would’ve been interested to look into other musicals.
I don't really like Wicked. I saw it on Broadway a few years ago, loved it, then the next day I couldn't remember a single thing about the musical. It just wasn't memorable, and I know that this is an unpopular opinion lol
Then again, I was in fifth grade when it happened. The message of it just didn't stick with me I guess. Other musicals like Rent and Into the Woods were a lot more memorable for me.
I love sound of music, and my mum watched the movie every Christmas. And she had the vinal record, but I don't mind if other people like Amy don't like it
Musicals that aren't my cup of tea --------------------------------------------------- ·Charlie and The Chocolate Factory: I just find it too juvenile personally. Nothing wrong with that, but its just not for me. ·How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying: Its really a product of its time. ·Dear Evan Hansen: some of the characters are unlikable, imo •Godspell: Sorry, but if I'm gonna enjoy a biblical musical, JCS is my go to •King Kong: I just can't get into •Mean Girls: Same reason as King Kong •Reefer Madness: Its really funny, but the gimmick of parodying a PSA from the 1930s gets old fast
Some of them I feel you, some of them I was surprised until you explained that the themes really mean a lot to you. It's always interesting to hear peoples' points of views on this since even though we may love musicals we all have some we just don't like. I live in the US so some of the shows you mentioned I've never heard of and some that I didn't like may have never come to the West End. My least favorites are West Side Story(the 2009 revival was half in spanish and the understudies were way under rehearsed which was unfortunate), the Little Mermaid (they changed the ending with Ursula so drastically that it just felt disappointing and even though I was maybe 16 at the time the whole show felt like they were trying way too hard to appeal to children), and probably Cats (music is great I was even in it and enjoyed it immensely, but when you're in a show playing the lead and you still have no clue what the plot is I feel like something's faulty about it), and just most Rogers and Hammerstein (their music just doesn't do it for me I can't explain why just not my thing)
Ooh the revival West Side Story was on when we were performing our production of WSS and we took a lot of inspiration from that show - I sang A Boy Like That in Spanish, but totally get it won't have been for everyone! I can't imagine the Little Mermaid would be my kind of show to be honest!
Honestly the Little Mermaid NEVER should have been put on stage. So bad! If it weren't for the fact that it was one of the shows a summer intensive I did as a teenager included in tuition I never would have gone to see it. I saw some unfortunate productions through that week long intensive in the 3 years I did it. Also got to see some amazing ones, but sometimes the bad ones are just so bad that you remember them better than the good ones. West Side Story might have been better if their understudies were better rehearsed. The night I saw it they had understudies for Anita, Bernardo, Tony, and Riff. Riff and Tony were actually good but Anita was a hot mess she couldn't keep up with the dancing in America and Bernardo was hitting some off notes and just didn't feel like he was completely in character. The Spanish was a really cool idea, but when you don't speak it and they don't announce that the English is in your playbill it gets a little confusing at times. I think that was the only show Lin Manuel Miranda was affiliated with that I didn't like. In The Heights and Bring it On I saw and both were wonderful I was thinking Bring it On might not be so it was a nice surprise. I haven't seen Hamilton because I mean tickets are sold out constantly but the album is great so if it ever tours in my area I'm totally seeing it.
Amy "just doesn't do it for me" Lovatt
Oh god.... it's very true isn't it?!
Amy Lovatt I feel really bad now for pointing this out
Guys I saw Hamilton yesterday and I'm still not over it
Cammie Halliday was it good? I seeing it in april in london
hamiltonlover 342 Yes. I was just completely blown away, the London cast is just incredible
Lucky!, I’m glad you enjoyed it
Cammie Halliday glad to hear it, I’m seeing it in London in February!
Cammie Halliday I saw it in July of 2017 and I still am not over it.
When I was a kid it was like "why did they run away after their show?" I just thought they were going to miss the bus for their mountain vacation or something.
i saw it live and i actually liked it more than the movie.
I found the live show repetitive and lack luster tbh 🤷♀️ love the movie and the movie soundtrack though
I was in a production of sound of music not too long ago and it’s easily the best musical I’ve ever done
Every time she says "it doesn't do it for me" take a shot lol
hahahhaa triggered!
But I don't wanna throw away my shot!
I am not throwing away my shot!
Well at least she doesn't call her opinion fact like others do. I rather her say that haha. But fair enough
I’d die from Alcohol poisoning
Totally respect your opinion, but I liked Matilda, Hello Dolly!, The Lion King, and The Sound of Music... I guess that's the child-like part of myself.
Victoria Odegaard MATILDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Same
I love Matilda
When I grow up....
I LOVE Matilda The musical
You walked out of a Gary Barlow musical? You're my kind of girl.
Who is Gary Barlow?
I saw calendar girls yesterday in Sheffield and I thought it was so good. The cast were amazing, the songs were great, so empowering at the end. The real calendar girls were there on the night too. Think it was a slightly different version because some of the stuff she said didn't happen in mine
I like Gary Barlow lol, but I saw the show and it really felt like a novelty show...
Edit- it has not passed the test of time haha it was fun at the time but I haven't listened to any of the music since and I'd definitely not class it as one of my faves
*mentions The Lion King*
Me: well, good luck with the new Frozen musical that’s coming out soon
Hold up hold up, *Frozen?!* I’m searching this up.
Edit: Oh god, it’s true
OMG you didnt know frozen was coming? oh yes .....Let it Go will be making another go around to drive us all mad. Mainly cuz there will always be that one little queen that thinks his comment of "just Let it Go" was his brilliant comeback
Tbh I watched half of a full bootleg and it’s so good (and the quality on the boot is perfect)
The Lion King is my favorite Disney show but NO Mufasa can beat James Earl Jones.
ShadowDuelist15 I saw the frozen musical, it was actually amazing omg
My least favorite has gotta be Love Never Dies, the Phantom of the Opera sequel. I'm a big Phantom fan, and the story line really bugged me. There were a few good songs, but I just wasn't impressed by it :P
I saw it in the Pantages and it was so cheesy and terrible
It kind of plays out like a weird fan fiction
I just saw it on it’s national tour on Saturday and it was executed VERY WELL. Costumes, set, and actors were awesome! But the plot and characterization itself is not original and just makes it feel like a silly soap opera. I mean, raoul and Erik’s petty argument over Christine song?? Christine felt like property in it rather than her own person. I predicted the ending! You shouldn’t be able to do that with Phantom stuff haha. The performers performed the numbers very well, but the songs themselves aren’t very interesting. So I agree. It’s probably one of my least favorites as well
I didn't love it either to be honest
I guess you could say your love DIED for this show when you listened to it.
Mama Mia had fun music, but the plot was empty. I also didn't like grease. I only saw the movie versions of both, but again, no plot. A few plot holes I couldn't get over, like did they not mention what school they go to over the summer? And the music just didn't capture me like it should.
Etta Jurima agreed! Love the music of Mamma Mia but not the plot
Mama Mia is a jukebox musical using the music of pop group Abba
Etta Jurima I've seen the movie adaptation "Mamma Mia!". It was AWFUL! The plot was paper thin, the acting was average at best, and most of the songs were poorly sung. My mother saw most of the movie with me when we saw it on HBO. She was so uncomfortable with the bad musical numbers. She was cringing so hard at the "Lay All Your Love On Me" part.
Why the hell was a sequel made?
Allie Falkner But they went to the same school after summer break.
I just realized I like the aesthetic and music of Mamma Mia, but not the plot. I use to think it was my favorite musical of all time but now that I really think about it, I just love the idea of a beautiful place with fun catchy music.
Controversial: I’m not a fan of Les Mis, the songs are great but the show is too long and depressing
It’s based on a 1500 paged book!
I really wouldn't recommend the book then. The book's long and VERY detailed. Buuut I love Victor Hugo's works and honestly my writing style isn't very to the point either. Les mis is great but it will take forever to read.
God I ghost wrote this comment
newxromantic agh I love les mis so much it’s my favourite!
I didn't realise how full of plot holes the musical of Les Mis had until I saw the Tv series.
Greek Tragedy i agree !!
Greek Tragedy I 💗 Matilda sm💖💖💖
Spacehacks I haven't watched it yet but my old classmate/friend is in it. Yeah my comment is irrelevant.
The Asian Potato i watched it twice and my friend played Amanda Thripp in the Australian cast
0:00 Oh don't worry I won't get mad
1:23
*says mamma mia*
*TRIGGERED*
Sorryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Amy Lovatt oh my you commented I'm quite surprised but don't worry I forgive you it's just mamma Mia is my favorit musical it holds sentimental value but I understand
Also have a nice day
Not really related, but I watched The Book of Mormon recently and I loved it!
I am sick of Disney turning their movies into stage musicals. So many original writers, but Disney has mega dollars to turn their animated films into stage musicals, and don't get me started on the live action remakes.
Remember back in the '80s when Disney was on the brink of bankruptcy? Now they own practically everything! Damn LITTLE MERMAID!
the hunchback of notre dame was adapted into a musical. if you haven't heard it or seen it, look it up on yt. it's really well-produced and the songs from both the disney film version and the added one were magnificent.
It works
True but i dont hate the idea of a princess and the frog stage adaptation. I can already see a few women playing tiana and ugh it’d be great
Newsies is my favorite musical
I don't really have an opinion of sherk. I don't hate shrek but it was never a childhood favorite. (Movie I didn't listen to the musical)
Edit: I listen to almost the entire musical and hahahahaha it's ao funny hahahahaha. Didn't like the movie but I enjoyed this a lot hahahahaha
SoHardToBeMe how dare you!
Scott Keenan Pardon me kind sir!
sherk
SoHardToBeMe I did stage crew for shrek in high school, it’s... surprisingly good
Get sherked
Amy dislikes a musical? What world are we living in? Lol. I respect your opinions and always will.
I personally don't like Shrek the Musical or Spongebob the Musical because I simply don't like the story of either one.
, well from what over seen so far. I'm not against the music, I just don't like the story in musical form, movie form, or show form. Ok, I just don't like the shows or movies. I do have to admit that the Spongebob Musical does have some good songs though.
And I can't really have a real opinion because I haven't dove into many musicals yet.
FoxWolf 273 i really liked the official broadway recording of shrek but when i saw it myself it was really disappointing! and i can’t really imagine spongebob the musical ahaha
itsageorgia yeah o saw the recording of it in choir one day, it was ok but it wouldn't be something I'd go out and see myself on my own will.
I do like Shrek The Musical, but I love Spongebob the musical. I am glad that you are not against the music though because, in my opinion, the music is amazing in Spongebob the musical. I can understand why you don't like the plot. I love it, but I can see why you don't like it.
itsageorgia Spongebob the musical, in my opinion, is amazing.
Hai my dude I do community theatre and a lot of the kids are hamilfans. Also through Instagram just by browsing
aleksandrasteff fair enough, but personally I wouldn't let something like that get in the way of my love for something. That's just me though.
aleksandrasteff don’t let fandoms ruin your opinion.
Can I like this comment a million times??? I'd love to hear Amy's thoughts on it too!!
I've seen it four times now 😅
I’m seeing it tomorrow for the first time and I’m soooo EXCITED!!!!
Anna Belden thank you!
Izzy Springthorpe how was it?
Raencloud IT'S MY FAVOURITE MOVIE I JUST LOVE IT SO MUCH
how do u look flawless in every video?!?! TEACH ME YOUR WAYS!!!!
WHAT?!? Aww thank you so much!
I feel the exact same way about mama-mia, except I do occasionally listen to it. Also I love Hello Dolly and The Sound of Music, but I absolutely respect your opinion, and do understand that they can come off as childish and gimmicky.
The bom pillows are incredible
Thanks!
Eve Pendragon they are something incredible amirite?
Amy Lovatt where did u buy them?☺️
People shall kill me for this, but, I'm not so keen on BMC. Sorry! The only 2 songs I like are Michael in the Bathroom and A Guy That I'd Kinda Be Into. I am glad that Spongebob and Shrek and School of rock arn't on that list because I love all 3. Especially Spongebob the musical because it is so good!
I also like play rehearsal, but that's because it always gets stuck in my head at rehearsal. But I also wasn't a big BMC fan.
Jane Culcheth Beard same
I personally like BMC but I suppose I understand why it's not liked
I just find a lot of the songs relatable
I loveee it. I personally like Pitiful Children, it's so epic. I get how some characters and songs can be annoying and earworming.
Same
I prefer the mama mia movie over the musical, same with Matilda.
SAME
same for me but with heathers :/ i don't know why but the story made me cringe so hard I couldn't even finish listening to the album... even though there are some quite good songs there
Honestly me with Hamilton and I know it’s based on real life but it’s just kinda, ehh
I like the songs of BMC but the whole time I was watching it I was like "THATS NOT EVEN HOW PILLS WORK. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!"
It’s a sci-fi of course it’s not based on fact it’s a fiction book that the musicals based on btw how. can you dislike Michael x3
I gotta say, the costumes in The Lion King are really good. Like those headpieces for the lions and stuff.
Fun fact: Caleb McLaughlin is in the lion king, who was also in stranger things
I really don't like Mamma Mia don't get me wrong I have nothing against the people who worked on the musical I great respect on the people who worked on it
Yeah I totally respect everyone in all these shows, I just don't love them
Hey Amy, I have a point on the score of Sweet Charity.
Oh thank you Troy! I didn't ever think of it like that - makes a lot of sense, I really appreciate it!
I did see it on Broadway funnily enough. It just wasn't my kind of show....
I was just Mufasa and before I auditioned I felt the same way but now I disagree if u really take a look at lion king and break down the characters and the story it really tells an amazing story of life
I don’t really like the plot of Spongebob the Musical, but I don’t mind the music. I think that it has an excellent cast, but the plot just isn’t that good.🤷🏽♀️
Ally Restrepo yeah the plot is pretty basic... I still love it tho ❤️ seeing it next month in fact
I was in chorus in fifth grade and I did a song from 42nd street. I loved it and it was fun. But I haven’t seen the musical yet.
Ahhh noooooo! I love Rent so much!!! I do get people not liking it though. I saw an awful production of it once and it felt like it would never end!
Laryssa T I’m seeing that soon. Now I’m nervous
Wonder Where the hell your parents are don't be! It's just my personal opinion, every musical leaves a different impression on everybody 😁
I read "storm" instead of show. Yes, I'm listening to Hadestown too much...
unpopular opinion: i love the story of be more chill, i read the book and adored it, but i am not a fan of the music at all. michael in the bathroom is really the only song i can tolerate.. christine and jeremy’s voices make me mad
Well, with Jermemy and Chrisitine I find you can simply listen to their voices and the way they sing, and then get an idea of what they're characters are like. Which is awesome! But there's definetly better singers out there.
linni X yeah, i agree with that. i think that the tone you sing with is important for giving people a feel of the character. what i meant by my comment was that i’m not exactly a fan of some of the techniques they use while singing (like that thing christine does at the end of lines where she makes it sound breathier and more high pitched? what’s with that)
I ahree on eberthing accept the plot
I respect your opinion, personally Christine (Stephanie Hsu) and Jeremy (Will Conolly) are my favorite of the show
:0c this is interesting bc I feel like. The exact opposite? I love the music but the plot just does Not do it for me at all. (Actually just personally the plot seems interesting but I don't think the musical executes it well. At all.)
"Quiet" from Matilda is one of my all time favorite songs.
I really love Matilda, it was the first musical I ever went to see and I’ve got really fond memories of it.
Totally agree with you about Matilda! But my least favourite show is Jamie, there isn’t a single memorable song and I spent the entire time thinking Jamie was a total brat. Not sure how I was supposed to root for him!
I’ve said this before, but I feel Hamilton is very overhyped. Another one I dislike is Once Upon A Mattress... our director picked it for our school show this year and nobody is happy with it :/
Nathan Stanley omygod Hamilton is voverhyped and it just ruins it for me
I wouldn't call people feeling highly about it overhyped
It really is amazing to a lot of people, Not everyone will feel the same ofc but idk about calling things overhyped
Liam Serrie Phrased much better than me, Ty
I have autism...and idc if it’s autism friendly just love the show no matter what...or don’t your opinion not mine
Matilda was the first (and is the only so far) musical i ever saw and eh idk it wasn't memorable
Loved reading all your thoughts and thank you for your congrats! x
Poor Matilda. I know that no one is gonna believe me but my lunch lady’s niece played Matilda in the Musical. No LIE
the book of mormon pillows omg i need them!!!!
Ok so these aren't shows I hate (because I don't hate any shows) but I'm just really meh about them:
(He is my favorite, that's why I auditioned for him)
Like heathers, and Dear evan hansen, and Hamilton.
Me: *KYAAAAA*
I was never a huge fan of Heathers the musical
Heathers is my favourite lmao
Jasmyn •3• bruh
@@Liv-oe2iu Me too. I listened to Hamilton beforehand but Heathers was the first musical I listened to as I was actually getting into musicals so it has sentimental value for me plus I love the songs.
WHAT! SOUND OF MUSIC IS AMAZING!
But it’s 5 hours long. I would know. I was in a school orchestra for the performance of it. I like it up to halfway
my school is doing 42nd street this year and it kinda bugs me because, like you said, the story is meh and my school is known for its drama department. i run lights and im just not enthused.
noooooo! hope you end up enjoying it anyway thoughj!
I feel the same about Mamma mia. Like I really loved the movie. But I wouldn't rewatch it like any other movie or musical I've seen.
I liked the original broadway cast (Sutton Foster, Brian D’arcy James) but the whole idea is just too eh for my taste😂
I am 100% with you on Matilda. The book writer(s) did a poor job adapting it to the stage.
AND PEGGY!
Amy Lovatt I think it’s because Bette wasn’t going to be performing so they chose a number that didn’t include her.
I'm not the Biggest fan of Hello Dolly but I think they were originally planning to do another number for the Tonys. However, the set was considered too big so they had to do something else instead.
Trixiah Gaming I think they should have done Elegance! It’s a fun number and would have showed off Gavin Creel for the Tony he was nominated for!
What is your opinion on Billy Elliot the musical?
Btw, it's like my favourite show
I love it! I saw it 4 times when it was in London!
Amy Lovatt am in love with it too, I saw it twice in London and once in Cardiff
ARE THOSE
BOM PILLOWS
*WHERE DID YOU GET THOSE*
They're from RedBubble! x
Amy Lovatt theyre beautiful!
Revisited this video because I love it! What do you think of Spamalot?
When I saw matilda it was the first ever broadway show that I had ever seen so it was memorable for me especially the actor who played matilda🤗
Yes, Dogfight is incredible. Just listen to Lindsey Mendez sing “Pretty Funny”.
That Sound Of Music one hit me hard ahaha. I love it so much that I asked my parents if I could go and see the stage production as a “well done” after I passed my GCSEs ahaha
*prepares for backlash* I don't like be more chill...... I just don't idk why I've tried to like it but is just not my type of show I guess.....
That's ok, everyone has different opinions :D
Honestly, I really love the music but like... eugh. It’s not totally my type either?
I think the characters are really interesting and the music is catchy,, but the story line is eh
I almost walked out of Urine Town, I just couldn’t take it.
I have to say when I saw it on the west end I really disliked it, but then I saw a drama school production and loved it!!!!
My least favorite musicals:
A lot of y’all are gonna want to kill me after reading the last two I’m sorry
-Cats (no plot. no character development. makes no sense. it’s just cats in an alley)
-Grease (music is annoying as hell)
-Amelie (probably spelled that wrong. boring. very boring. I love Phillipa Soo but yikes)
-Heathers (I love the music and it’s a very fun show, but the overhype kills it. It’s not as good as some fans make it out to be. movie is sooooo much better)
-Great Comet (the music just didn’t do it for me. story and characters didn’t interest me at all)
Great comet is one of my favorites of all time but i respect your opinion. I personaky hate BMC
Oh I agree with Amelie and the great comet, I’m sure they’re nice but they’re not my type
1. Cats is amazing if you see it live, the dancing especially is amazing, but yeah the plot is nonexistent
2. Grease- agreed
3. Amelie- uhh, it’s so boring!
4. Heathers- i don’t think it’s anything revolutionary and the music is fun to sing along or listen to, but it’s soooo overhyped
5. Great comet- I like the instrumental music and the plot, but the lyrics frustrate me so much! It seems like it was just lazily thrown together, and they’re just reading from the book with music in the background!
Allisøn I actually have seen Cats live, and yes i love the choreography! (and some of the music too) But the rest of the show just lost it for me
i could cry
Edit: i am crying
SiSi the fox as in st. louis? if so, i’m from st. louis as well!! i love the fox, most of my best childhood theater memories came from there
Caroline! at the Disco yeah!
The Phantom is the best musical, in my opinion. The only thing that can match up with it is Les Miserables.
I think Les Mis has it beat, though not by much. When I think of all the amazing actors who have passed through both shows.....WOW! Incredible talents!
I LOVE Sound of Music, it's my second favourite musical after Grease... But I respect your opinion! Not everyone likes the same musicals! What a boring world that would be :)
your average musical: exists
amy: well I wouldn’t put it on to listen to around the house...
Try original cast album or original 1960s film of How to Succeed. It is a dated show but the songs are remarkable. Some revivals just aren't good.
Ooooh ok, will retry it!
Do you like Blood Brothers by any chance?
I do! not one of my favourites but I definitely enjoy it!
least favorite show: bye bye birdie. i saw it at a school and i was so bored. the plot was so dumb and i disliked the songs, i just hate it.
What no i love that show!!
I actually agree with your opinion about 42nd street! All of my friends I tell say, “Oh my gosh, why?! 42nd is amazing!” And I agree with them, it’s very well made! And I amazingly love dance-oriented shows too (most people I know can tell from my love of Newsies, Hamilton and Fiddler on The Roof, which have really good dances), but I’m still more of a person who likes musicals more for their story rather than the dance. Another reason why I like Fiddler, Hamilton and Newsies so much is because they keep the story going while entertaining you with the dances at the same time. But, I just don’t know why... I always thought the story for 42nd street was a little... boring? I don’t know.. ;
Didn't you also once tell a story of how you fell asleep during the Lion King? Or is that me imagining things
I did?!?!?! Wow! Well done for remembering! It was when I saw it on Broadway
I'm so happy that Cats isn't on the list.
Megan Marchionda That more of a personal reason. I love 42nd street and my school did it
Actually, Matilda the Musical is based on the Roald Dahl novel of the same name. The film was also based on it, but the musical is not an adaptation of the movie.
The only musicals I've ever disliked are:
Cats - I actually wanted to leave after the first act, but my mom wouldn't let me :(
Urinetown - although it was a high school production, so take it with a grain of salt
Spring Awakening is meh. I think it's overrated.
Chloe_speaks cats is so good wtf?
dearheatherchandler right?? Cats is amazing
Spring awakening has been a huge part of my life for so many years so you’re opinion is hard for me to hear, but I can respect it cause I get that musicals covering that subject matter aren’t for everyone.
Cats. The one that about 99% of the musical theatre population hates. I am part of the 99% oops
But what about groffsauce bc he’s in spring awakening
to be honest i didn’t think i liked hello dolly either but then i saw bette midler in it on broadway and OH MY GOD I WAS BLOWN AWAY!!! i think it really depends on the production value as opposed to the story
I've heard a few people say this, so will maybe give it another chance
This isn't a theatre show, but it's still a musical, so I suppose it counts
I couldn't really get into Moulin Rouge, I liked the Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend and Material Girl crossover song, but that was it.
Going to be a musical soon though!!! I respect your opinion but I have seen it 500+ times
Doll Off topic, but I love your Corrin profile pic!
Thank you so much!
oh my god i was in a production of les misérables at my local theatre and our director had to ban mamma mia because people were singing songs from it non stop! i played gavroche in the show and it was weird since i'm a teenage girl haha
I didn't even read the book until after listening to the musical, so I'm not judging.
Hmm I get people not liking it but I don't know anyone who doesn't remember things about it!
Then again, I was in fifth grade when it happened. The message of it just didn't stick with me I guess. Other musicals like Rent and Into the Woods were a lot more memorable for me.
The songs are very forgettable.
I love sound of music, and my mum watched the movie every Christmas. And she had the vinal record, but I don't mind if other people like Amy don't like it
*mentions the lion king*
Me: dies inside a-little 😂😭
Musicals that aren't my cup of tea
---------------------------------------------------
·Charlie and The Chocolate Factory: I just find it too juvenile personally. Nothing wrong with that, but its just not for me.
·How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying: Its really a product of its time.
·Dear Evan Hansen: some of the characters are unlikable, imo
•Godspell: Sorry, but if I'm gonna enjoy a biblical musical, JCS is my go to
•King Kong: I just can't get into
•Mean Girls: Same reason as King Kong
•Reefer Madness: Its really funny, but the gimmick of parodying a PSA from the 1930s gets old fast
When you said you did'nt like the lion king I was really confused. Then you said it was because it was aimed at kids and I rembered I'm eleven 😂😂😂😂
HeyItz Aniela nice
