another thing on the 'gods can die' point is that most of the Aeldari panthron, which were warp gods were killed by Slaanesh, so we have evidence that they can be killed by something strong enough.
Imperium, Orks and Eldar just need to get into playing Doom until the slayer manifests in the warp. They will know they succeeded when 8 string guitar noises echo throughout the galaxy
the problem is that they might not have been really 'killed' proper. in 40k we know for a fact they are basically in slaanesh's warp stomach (for lack of a better term), but still alive. its also worth noting that in AOS elven souls were retrieved from slaanesh's stomach after she was chained up, the elven souls weren't killed or destroyed, they were just being tortured and drained by slaanesh's essence after being consumed. this likely means that the elven pantheon is likely still alive in some way or another somewhere in slaanesh, its just that it might be a lot harder to take a god out of slaanesh's stomach compared to just some random elf.

One thing that I feel would have been fun to bring up is that: if a Daemon tries to posses someone and fails, that lucky person is immune to further possessions as well as the corruption of chaos entirely. In the game Inquisitor: Martyr, an Inquisitor organized possessions on-mass to try and create an army that was immune to chaos. Now this has a very low chance of success, and if it does fail then your soul is condemned to eternal torment. The game is about cleaning up his mess. It is a very cool Idea; if you survive a possession then Chaos cannot corrupt you.
Necrons are already in the process of creating more pylons, as evidenced by the Pariah Nexus. Unfortunately for all non-Necrons it has the slight side-effect of causing gradual soul-death as it turns out being cut off from the realm of souls and emotion tends to not be good for those _with_ souls. But hey, it give Necrons some shiny, new, uninhabited bodies to experiment with reversing biotransferrence.
I mean, the whole "make the galaxy a better place to defang the chaos gods" is basically what the Tau are doing. Arguably, it's working, but the odds of the Tau growing large enough to cool the entire galaxy down before a Waaagh or Hive Fleet takes notice of them and either wipes them out or renders them as bad as everyone else are... not good.
Tau is already becoming as bad as everyone else. Tau aren't naive and good anymore. They hardened after having so many fuck ups with the inhabitants of the galaxy.
Also the tau generation of a new warp god who is kind occurs too. The greater good god literally helped a ship escape the warp... most demons want the ship to get sucked in.
Grimgor, Gotrek, and Sly Morbo all teaming up while listening to the doom soundtrack could end Chaos. Or ya know...have Chaos enslave Felix's soul and have Gotrek go ape shit in anger
It's not a bad viewpoint, though. If you can hurt something, it's a reasonable extrapolation that if you hurt it enough, it will be for all intents and purposes dead. In the case of Chaos Gods, it's entirely possible that they would eventually come back, but the new form might be sufficiently different that the world/galaxy is still better off. Heck, it could even snowball. Imagine if someone took out Khorne, Khaine ended up soaking all of that violent energy instead, and used it to go challenge Slaanesh to a rematch.

@@griffionwyvrus9063 chaos gods feed off emotion, not the molecular state of a human. The necrons were frozen for millions of years, and even now their bodies represent stagnation, and Nurgle cant touch them. They dont fuel him at all. If you froze every human, it would be the exact same thing as what the necrons have. No interaction with Nurgle at all. But when you wake up, thats a different story Stagnation is what Nurgle represents and aims for, but it's not what he feeds off. All chaos gods feed directly from emotion.
Getting rid of just 2 is a very very risky play. It's absolutely possible for the Chaos Gods to revived - of course, under a new form so no more Tzeentch and Khorne per se but new gods of change and war - and hope for the best that these ones are going to be untainted and therefore at worst neutral and at most actually good.
Honestly in 40k Isha returning would be a massive blow against chaos and more specifically Nurgle and Slaanesh, Nurgle would be weakened because not only would the act of saving Isha probably fuck over his garden for awhile but now he doesn't have a test subject so his plagues won't all be quite up to standard even if its only 1 in 20 that are worse that's still massive, also the potential moral blow depending on how you view his affection towards Isha, and Slaanesh would be weakened because now the Eldar have one of their OG gods back that they actually like being around which would reduce the negative eldar emotions that Slaanesh loves, and she might be able to provide some resistance when an eldar dies and maybe save some souls from getting eaten.
there is a few reasons why this might not work. 1. isha may already be able to escape nurgles garden but chooses not to because the one thing keeping her from being instantly slaanesh vored in the warp is nurgle claiming her under his "protection". freedom means jack shit if the exit door leads right into slaanesh's gaping jaw, so for that reason alone it might not be feasible. 2. assuming she is able to avoid being immediately eaten by slaanesh, isha just isn't the earth shattering god that the galaxy needs to REALLY change up the status quo. yes isha is powerful, but she is a healer and fertility goddness. she would be able to allow the eldar to procreate faster and field better numbers, heal and/or revive from otherwise deadly wounds, and generally better standard of living for a lot of people in the galaxy, but she doesn't really have any way to reliable protect the eldar from slaanesh. she might be able to use her power to protect a few specific groups eldar here and there and revive them instantly instead of slaanesh consumption, but the eldar still wouldn't be able to use the true might of their pysker powers risk free like they did before slaanesh. isha would definitely shake things up and empower the eldar, but this would likely be offset by chaos and slaanesh especially devoting much more resources to slowing down the eldar. a major eldar god coming back is something 3/4 chaos gods aren't going to like. nurgle for obvious reasons will be pissed off losing his prize, slaanesh once again obvious reasons, and tzeetch would see that isha could shake up his endless schemes and devote demons and schemes to slowing the eldar down. theres also a possibility that certain necron dynasties might see an eldar goddess coming back as a big threat. remember isha was still apart of the war in heaven even if she wasn't at the front lines, so now you have the ancient enemies of the eldar all of a sudden with a decent reason to focus more on the eldar, if not certain dynasties outright crusading against the eldar to try to nip them in the bud before they has time to rebuild in any proper way. my main point is that while isha coming back would be big for the eldar, it wouldn't necessarily be the instant status quo upheaval that say asuryan coming back would.
@@sovietunion7643 Those are all very good points, and yeah the eldar would probably be targeted alot more. I still think that would be good for the eldar if for no other reason than the writers have to acknowledge they exist even if it's by talking about chaos diverting more forces or Slaanesh hunting her down.
@@sovietunion7643There's also the benefit that for as long as Isha stays in Nurgle's domain, she can slowly pass out the cures to all of his plagues that he creates. Leaving Nurgle's domain means losing the first response opportunity to start preparing a cure to the worst of Nurgle's plagues, which without Isha's cures could easily wipe large parts of the galaxy and sent it into pestilence
Changing the worship as in "we give our blood sweat and tears for Khorn, as we do our daily work." Khorn the Honest Worker God, revered by farmers as they grow corn for Khorn :D
khorne would honestly work best as a gymbro type god where getting better physically and pushing yourself to do better in workouts and training empower him. khorne already embodies "only the strong survive" side of nature, worship khorne as a sort of meritocratic god of strength and physical ability that rewards hard work and dedication and you basically turn a negative god into an pretty positive one.
The chaos gods can't be killed because GW is inexplicably full of chaos stans who stan them at every opportunity. Leaving that aside, there's a fanfiction version of 40K (Brighthammer) where Big E was competent, therapy still existed and the primarchs were all more functional versions of themselves. It ended up with Horus nobly sacrificing himself to save reality, and the chaos gods being/becoming gods of order instead (Khorne as the god of noble warriors, Nurgle as the god of life, Tzeentch as the god of wisdom, Slaanesh as the god of art). The whole setting is intentionally noble-bright and focused on high adventure.
Before Games Workshop decided to kill Fantasy, there was another potential means hinted at, which is similar to the pylons thing. Basically, there was a mention that while there was a southern gate, it was pretty much contained since between the High Elves and the Lizardmen, there was a ring of functional Old One defences at the south that prevented Chaos from projecting power from that gate. This implies that, theoretically, a similar ring could be formed around the north gate (and might possibly have existed before the High Elf/Dark Elf split and the Dark Elves started corrupting magical sites in Naggaroth). The complication is that the southern ring is mostly protected by ocean which makes it hard for the demon-beastmen at the south pole to launch attacks, while to the north the Norscans are good seafarers and there's a land connection from the Chaos Wastes that mortal followers could attack from (let alone the activities of other destructive races such as the greenskins), so establishing and defending such ring certainly wouldn't be easy. But it might still be more practical than some of the other theoretical possibilities.
My cousin and i who used to play Warhammer on Sundays when we were younger (i was Orcs in both Fantasy and 40k) recently took a look back on the End Times, and he said this: 'If GW really wanted to sell Age of Sigmar, they should have killed off the Chaos Gods and any other character who is in 40k.' When i asked him to elaborate, he said the following: 'Keep Chaos as a faction but end the Chaos Gods, have Nagash be the one who does it but Keep both keep the Horned Rat and The Everchosen (i can't spell his name) so that way you still have Daemons but now the thrones are empty and up for the grabs such as a certain Dark Elf who cant get over the First Phoenix King (i cant spell his name either).'

nah, this is assuming they're gods like the old Greek gods level of power. In Fantasy, perhaps that's true, but not in 40k. I love PancreasNoWork and I love Eldar, but I cannot deny my inner Chaos. Nurgle would love this follower so much that he would practicaly be gaslightet into becoming this ideal version of himself just to meet the standards of the one follower who can only see the good parts in him.
I've had a headcanon for a bit now that in 40K, prior to the Great Crusade, there were LOTS of gods that competed with Chaos. Every culture, human or xenos, that had their own religion (assuming it was a theistic one) created one or more gods that maintained a standing in the Warp. It's where the wolf spirits of Fenris come from: the Space Wolves and other Fenrisians are allowed to continue believing in them, so they keep existing. This, in turn, created a bulwark in the Warp against the forces of Chaos. Sure, as primordial beings, pure emotion is enough to sustain the Ruinous Powers, but they _still_ get a bigger power boost if worshiped directly. If other religions exist, the power given from any given person is likely split between that which Chaos gets and what they direct towards the gods they believe in. In essence, Chaos is only skimming power off the top. Hell, even most planets that were verifiably possessed of religions based squarely on masks for Chaos weren't really "Chaos planets". Lorgar's planet, or the planet from the _Legion_ novel, weren't corrupted hellholes until AFTER the status quo was knocked off its axis. People were worshiping masks of Chaos gods, but not really _as_ Chaos. Their religions, instead, were the moderated kind that comes from a civilization becoming calcified. They didn't need Chaos in its raw form, and so their society was stable. Not necessarily _just,_ but stable. One could argue the masks they worshiped had become gods with their own identities, responding to the mythology those cultures had built up over them. People adopt beliefs that benefit them, and in a settled society you don't need the excesses of Chaos unless something is already very wrong. (Unless you're the Eldar, who took 65 million years to murder-frick a Chaos god into existence). In short, the galaxy had many problems during the Age of Strife, but I'd argue Chaos wasn't one of them. Because there was a strong undercurrent of religiosity that innoculated the worlds and their people from Chaos corruption. It's why the Great Crusade wasn't fighting Chaos cults and daemons every step of the way. It was a concern so minor, the nascent Imperium didn't recognize Chaos for what it was, and other civilizations (like the Interex) had a lid on it. Then the Emperor decided to channel 100% of his Reddit Atheist powers, and waged war on faith itself. He thought doing that would cut Chaos off for good. No belief, no Chaos. In reality, all it did was burn every heaven, freeze every hell, and murder every god of every culture in the galaxy. You know, the ones, as established, who were _actually_ protecting people from Chaos. Suddenly, the Warp was depopulated of cosmic forces, leaving it wide open for conquest by Chaos. And because quadrillions of people were suddenly left disallowed or unable to worship their old gods, their whole worlds destroyed and their people enslaved by an Imperium that offered nothing but toil for the war effort, they were much more willing to accept any new belief system. In a time of great rage, despair, pain, and forlorn hope, the Chaos gods were strong, and advertising their services to people whose old gods had failed them. The reason the Imperium has held out so long against Chaos at this point is because, in the wake of the Emperor's martyrdom, everyone started worshiping him. He became the only game in town. His followers made sure of it. Not that this is too effective, really. Emperor-worship offers little to many citizens, aside from toil, hate, dehumanization, and death. For countless people, there's no solace in the state religion. Hence why, for every Imperial zealot, there's a hundred folk just scraping by, giving lip service to the Emperor to avoid being put to death. There's a reason both Chaos and the Genestealer Cults get constant converts to their cause. So maybe, just maybe, one step in reducing the effectiveness of Chaos would be to allow people to worship their own gods again. Ones who care about them and don't drive them towards mad excess or fanatical zeal. (Also, improving peoples' material conditions might help. You don't need Chaos if your needs are met and you can just chill.)
This is kinda true, more competition means innovation so Chaos gods will try to entice with other things to pose themself as very good but if the god you believe just wants to be respected, give tribute once in a while and doesnt outright murders you is way better than some skull armor
@bluecho4 That's actually a good theory and I can see the reason behind it and if that's what gw was going for from the start then I think of that as genius writing that in emperors hubris he created his greatest enemy. And even IRL I can agree with this, as religion itself in my view often has a stabilizing effect in a chaotic world like the one our ancestors lived in but as our world became less chaotic and more stable religion has been slowly at least in the western countries receded from public consciousness. And we are seeing a lot more societal problems Crop up as there is nothing to believe in except things like hedonism and bloodlust.
If the Warp works like it does in Fantasy and Age of Sigmar, this actually fits perfectly, since in Fantasy, the reason the Chaos Gods didn't make massive gains everywhere despite feeding on all emotions is because the Elven pantheon, the many different Human Gods, the Ancestor Gods, and even the Slann were all making a concerted effort to keep them at bay. In AoS, it's basically the same fight, just more visible. Emps unintentionally removing all limiters of the Gods he wanted to starve by removing their godly counters would be peak oopsies. Unfortunately, it also means GW would be admitting that the reason the galaxy is as bad as it is is basically solely on the Emperor's actions, and since the Imperium isn't allowed to be the true bad guys, they'll never let that happen in lore, despite it making sense. :c
honestly i just hope the spirit or whatever thing around fenris is just straight up ulric from fantasy. not some made up god that is similar just straight up ulric the wolf war god. it would honestly make sense because several of the other major gods in 40k are exactly the same as old fantasy. the chaos gods, the eldar/elven gods, both exactly the same in both settings, belakor and most other named demons exists in both as well. it would Honestly be nice if the warp undercurrents created the same god with ulric as well, and leman russ has known this fact the whole time and openly worshipped ulric but didn't let the emperor know for obvious reasons. this would honestly explain why the space wolves have such a strange obsession with wolves because they literally have a wolven god influencing their culture and mindset. also might explain why they are so violent and focus on war and war alone compared to other legions because ulric is a god of war as well.
18:11 As much as he never wanted it, Big E is probably already becoming a god. Descriptions of the throne range from uncontrolled, uncontained raw power to a mind fragmented so far it acts as a hive mind, and MANY humans worship the emperor, die for the emperor, sacrifice themselves directly to the emperor or his will... If he ever stands again, there's A pretty high chance it will be as a god, whether he wants it or not. And he's already wounded Nurgle, even through possessing a primarch. I'd say he could kill one if in person.
My headcanon/idea for what Archaon should have been rather than just like "kill the world and give gayhoas what they want" is that he should have essentially purposefully been trying to act as an evolutionary exctinction event, where he would be trying to have his hearts of iron warriors hunt down anything alive that shows emotion/psychic potential. Essentially trying to force all of life to evolve into blanks since the only things that would end up surviving is if living things adapt to not have the emotions/souls that empower chaos
Archaon isnt this complex. how would it function since based of his entire lore is to beat everyone to submission whilse also being a character whos easily influenced by someone else. Sigmar himself statet to him his failoure was himself, and no one else.
@@dendrienI thought Archaon was mostly angry about gods in general, and thought that Chaos was the best route to power to be able to end the reign of all gods in the setting.

On that note about using necron pylons to shut off chaos. While yes it would be one of the best solutions to shut off chaos from realspace, it comes with the tiny itsy bitsy small problem of driving every human and eldar insane since they are all connected to the warp in some way, and shutting that off has shown to have some pretty bad side effects for anyone unfortunate enough to be in its area of affect.
Plus the maw is a powerful god whose presence is only on the world and not in the chaos realms so the maw prevents the ogres from falling to chaos. (Until nurgle corrupts some ogres through infestation)
17:47 I did this once for shits and giggles, actually. Created a chaos god on paper that wasnt inherently evil and that actively sought to reset the Warp to its natural state as more of a sea of nascent dreams than an ocean of howling nightmares. If people are interested I'll post everything I have for them, otherwise I'll hold off on dropping a text wall nobody asked for lol
I adore how the solution to fortify every chaos gate or incursion with massive fortresses and armies is basically the Warhammer equivalent of "use a gun, and if that don't work,.USE MORE GUN"
Another method I think could defeat Chaos in Warhammer 40K is giving people the blank gene. If you disconnect people from the warp, then there is no way for Chaos to feed on others, and it will get weaker and possibly die. This would probably require the Eldar and the Orcks to die and the Emperor not to be a tyrant wanting to control people, which is why I believe the desire to control is the reason he didn't make his sons and all space marines blanks, but I do think it may be the best solution that does not involve killing everyone outside the ones doomed to die anyway, not sorry Eldar (though there is a chance they could live) or Orck that constantly run towards gun nests. And if they could introduce or activate the gene using a virus, then people's cooperation is not required; you just need to be fast enough to do so before they can stop you before it explodes out of control.
The closest thing to this actually occurring was the Kaldor Draigo incident, and Chaos just kinda regenerated back to normal once he and his plot armour had left the area
@@CarbonMage same thing happens whenever gork and mork happen to punch one another into a realm of chaos during their endless brawls. once they leave chaos just kind of fixes itself because its the warp.
Also gotta suggest the Ctan. They eat souls. The Chaos gods are made out of soul juice, like everything in the warp. Thus the ctan can eat daemons and slowly decrease the size of the big four as all the daemons are made out of small bits of each of gheir patron god. Eat Ka Banda and i bet Khorne gets weaker. Same with all the other gods.
And the C'tan can't even be killed, so theoretically just by the necrons and C'tan existing long enough they'll eventually consume every soul in the galaxy, starving and killing the chaos gods. Truly, the necrons are the rulers of the galaxy
From what I recall, the C'tan didn't eat souls themselves, but some sort of sapience energy that is definitely not souls, while the souls of their victims end up spilling out into the Warp and feeding whatever predators are waiting for them there. It's possible that was retconned, though.

Chaos is the dark reflection of human nature. (Think of how lust is a corruption of love.) The only way to "defeat" Chaos is for man to repent of his sin and to become virtuous. For that to happen on a universal scale is obviously impossible. However, killing the "gods" of Chaos should be feasible as the next best thing.
slaanesh is a corruption of love and emotion khorne is a corruption of meritocracy, honor and justice nurgle is a corruption of nature and peace tzeetch is a corruption of knowledge, change and hope
To be fair the Chaos Gods don't actually seem to care that much about other gods cropping up. Vashtorr is a great example of this, as is T'au'va, the entity the humans in the T'au empire created through their belief in the greater good.
you forgot the one that truly worked: invent American Football and make everyone play it instead of war. It worked so well that Nuffle is the most powerful god and that the other Four had to suck it up and make their own cult teams to get something out of it.

the best lore i have eve heard off is how once upon a time gork and mork were travelling through the warp and came upon two demons arguing in a cave. Gork and Mork made a bet over who could beat one of them the quickest. both beat the demons so quickly and so hard that they were begging them to stop. satisfied with the win and arguing over who won the bet, gork and mork went along their way fighting eachother as they went... the two demons they beat into near pulp were khorne and nurgle....
That thing about kinda changing the Chaos Gods nature by worshipping them in reasonable ways would be pretty funny actually. Honorable tug-of-wars for the honorable tug-of-war god, slightly bloody hands for the slightly bloody hands throne
The Mass Sacrifice scenario actually has precedent in 40k. Big E's origin story involves a ritualistic mass suicide of thousands of psykers across ancient Terra, which while not PUBLIC knowledge, is something certain factions have also accounted for. There's a contingency plan for if Terra falls (I think among the Grey Knights?) that involves all of their psykers following suit to empower Kalador Draigo as the same tier of lifeform, and founding a secondary Imperium. It would then make sense that, if you pile up enough psykers, you can get a sizable WARBAND of supreme beings/gods to march into the warp and wreck shop.
All I'm gonna say about the "you can't look at a Great Unclean One or a Keeper of Secrets and not be a little perturbed" is... well... You're wrong on one account there lol. another thing on the 'gods can die' point is that most of the Aeldari panthron, which were warp gods were killed by Slaanesh, so we have evidence that they can be killed by something strong enough.
Slaanesh is repeatedly stated to be able to be killed too. At its birth it was even wounded by an Eldar weapon.

Use the Tau.
They will resist it longer, and I am sure the Necron's will feel at home...
Also considering Vashtorr is currently in the Pariah Nexus, anti-chaos really isn't all it's cracked up to be.
I dont see the problem.
Too bad it will fail just as the last time back during the War in Heaven
I doubt it works like that, you can’t completely shut off the warp only dampen it or the Nids would have caused everyone to die once they rocked up.

I like how you applied predator logic when it comes to killing chaos, if it bleeds then we can kill it
It's not a bad viewpoint, though.
I disagree. Limiting yourself to just killing things that can bleed is pretty dumb. Non-bleeding things that need to be killed exist.

The Imperium dying might honestly be a good thing for 40K’s continuation.
@@whitewall2253 Nurgle THINKS it's entropy personified. Yet entropy existed before even the War in Heaven, so I'm going with granpapa is a big fat liar.
Put everyone in the setting into hibernation - a dreamless sleep - for a while. No fighting, so that's Khorne out. No change, so Tzeentch is done. There would be some decay, so Nurgle could still be there, but he'd be far, far weaker. Arguably 'sleeping for a ridiculously long time' is sort of excessive so Slaanesh might get something out of it, but it wouldn't be much. Best of all, a sleeping person isn't dead, so Nagash gets nothing out of the deal.
This won't work, the polar opposite of change of change is stagnation, Nurgle feeds on stagnation. This only makes Nurgle stronger.
@@griffionwyvrus9063 I mean I think it would be a pretty drastic change when everyone wakes up so it might cause some shit between tzeentch and nurgle
But when you wake up, thats a different story
Stagnation is what Nurgle represents and aims for, but it's not what he feeds off.
Best solution:
Tell Gotrek that the Chaos Gods have Felix’s soul.
TRUE
... and tell Grimgor that the Chaos Gods think theyre DA BEST?
I now can't stop imaging those two in elevator .
It aint much but corn for the Khorn god-Believer of Khorn of the corn
The best flakes are the KHORNE Flakes!!
CORN FOR THE CORN THRONE
Commie Khorn sounds like something out of Red Scare
khorne would honestly work best as a gymbro type god where getting better physically and pushing yourself to do better in workouts and training empower him. khorne already embodies "only the strong survive" side of nature, worship khorne as a sort of meritocratic god of strength and physical ability that rewards hard work and dedication and you basically turn a negative god into an pretty positive one.

My cousin and i who used to play Warhammer on Sundays when we were younger (i was Orcs in both Fantasy and 40k) recently took a look back on the End Times, and he said this:
'If GW really wanted to sell Age of Sigmar, they should have killed off the Chaos Gods and any other character who is in 40k.'
When i asked him to elaborate, he said the following:
'Keep Chaos as a faction but end the Chaos Gods, have Nagash be the one who does it but Keep both keep the Horned Rat and The Everchosen (i can't spell his name) so that way you still have Daemons but now the thrones are empty and up for the grabs such as a certain Dark Elf who cant get over the First Phoenix King (i cant spell his name either).'

@@christiandauz3742 I understand that. It doesn’t invalidate the point that chaos is favored by GW to the point that they actively retcon major defeats of chaos like the 13th black crusade. A faction can have reasons for being overpowered, but that doesn’t invalidate critique of poor narrative/writing. I find the chaos gods and their subjects to be fascinating lore wise, but as far as their narrative in universe, they do suffer from some just plain bad writing. Every faction does, that’s why the eldar trilogy got canned before it was finished, but they seem to get the benefit of being the favorite faction from a narrative standpoint in terms of how GW handles them. At the end of the day, I don’t really care how GW handles the writing, as I get to choose what books I read. I care on table top when the narrative affects a faction disproportionately and makes them unbalanced and not fun to play against. I always had the idea of a nurgle follower that could only ever see the beauty in his god, not in a twisted way but the genuine one. Nurgle would love this follower so much that he would practicaly be gaslightet into becoming this ideal version of himself just to meet the standards of the one follower who can only see the good parts in him.
Huh... interesting
The Imperium once again proves a completely self-defeating institution.

Chuck a named Space Marine at them, his plot armor bs will make short work of them.

I'm fond of the: let the Tyranids eat everything idea...
