    One of the simplest to understand videos on using a map and compass. I have recommended this to many.

    Thanks Hal for taking the time to make this video. Best explanation I’ve ever come across on how to use map and compass.

    More so that Hals's skills behind the tracking and trigger, this is the skill I most envy. He makes it seem so easy.

    25 years ago I was with Alpha Company 1/25 outa Topsham. Marine Corps grunt unit.. Our company commander was ex Force Recon.. he set up a land nav course for us in northern Maine. About October or so.. by Pickerel Pond I think.. damn thing was like 20 miles! Took us two days! Lol. He had Gatorade bottle with a number on it tied to a string hanging off a tree for our points.. best damn land nav I ever did. Seen plenty of moose.. lol

    The better Suunto and Silva compasses can be adjusted for declination so they read magnetic north directly.

    I use to know how to read a compass and map,but after I had a head injury I get very nervous.I can’t remember what I read anymore,I am considering getting one of the small gps so I can get back where my vehicle is.

    Thank you, Hal, for the video. I'm still trying to rap my head around adding the 18 degrees. It seems the further you get away from your starting point, the further away from your destination you'd be.

    Great video! Thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot from it. Thanks Hal! Can we expect additional videos on navigation? For example, how do we maintain our location and bearing when tracking deer where we are not necessarily taking a bearing reference and walking in a straight line, especially if you can't count on technology? How did hunters know where they are and how to get back before gps existed after a long day of tracking? It's these concerns that fuel my fear of getting lost in the woods and prevent my desire to be 100% focused on tracking a deer.

      You just periodically maintain your direction while on the track. You can check distance from the truck later in the day so you know how much time to get back, but remember that you don't have to go back the way you went in, you just need to get to a road!

    Excellent video. I’ve always been a little confused about adjusting for declination and now I think I get it. If you were out west with an east declination, would you subtract instead of add?

    Great info and video! Do you guys ever have to deal with ticks where you hunt at. I know you go pretty far North. Are you worried about them and do you wear any chemicals or treat your clothes? Perhaps you could make this a video topic. Thanks for any advice.

    Where is the best place to buy topo mas now. Everyone I know keeps telling me I need a gps . I do just fine with my compass. I want to start using maps with my compass. With just my compass sometimes I run in to cliffs or swamps and have to change my direction. A map would help me plan my route out better. Did anyone else see the bird fly up the stairs at 19ish mins?

    • @vicktdock
      @vicktdock 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Saw the bird was wondering about it. Back in the day in Connecticut I used to get the topo's from the state office building department of environmental protection. DEP Think its DEEP now.
