If you’ve watched The Chosen, you’ve seen how Jesus and his disciples were portrayed as authentically Jewish, living and praying in ways true to their time. The show even highlights some of the prayers they would have said-raising an intriguing question for many viewers: How did Jesus pray? What were the words He used when He spoke to God?
These prayers are found in Jewish prayerbooks called Siddurs. The word “Siddur” means “order,” much like the “order” of the Passover Seder. A Siddur represents the structured order of prayers used in Jewish worship. If you’ve ever picked up a Siddur, hoping to discover the prayers that Jesus, or Yeshua, prayed, you may have wondered how much of what’s in there actually dates back to the first century. Can we really know the prayers He prayed? The answer is yes, but uncovering them requires deep research through thousands of pages of ancient writings and historical sources.
That’s exactly why I’m creating the First-Century Siddur. This prayerbook is designed to bring the prayers of Yeshua to life, as they would have been prayed in His time. Some of these prayers may already feel familiar to you, while others have fallen out of use and are no longer recognized, even by many Jewish people today. The Siddur includes the Hebrew originals, beginner-friendly transliteration, and translations that are both accurate and deeply personal, allowing you to truly connect with the prayers. Every detail, down to the poetic layout, is crafted to help you engage meaningfully.
In addition to the prayers themselves, the First-Century Siddur offers rich back notes divided into three sections: historical insights and sources, explanations of specific words, and alternate versions of prayers for further study. There’s also valuable information in the introduction, instructions, and topical guides, making it not just a prayerbook but also a source of historical and spiritual depth. Whether you want to pray from it daily or explore the historical roots of these ancient prayers, this Siddur is designed to meet both needs.
To make this even more practical, I’m also teaching a Jewish prayer course at holylanguage.com. In this course, I’ll personally guide you through each prayer in Hebrew, helping you learn the words, understand their meaning, and experience their beauty.
While the First-Century Siddur is still in progress and not yet published, I’ll begin releasing each prayer to our community in 2025 as they are completed. Each prayer will come with a video lesson to guide you through it. If this journey excites you, I’d love for you to join us. Becoming part of this project is simple-just visit firstcenturysiddur.com. From there, you can join our online community and sign up for updates via email or text, so you’ll know the moment new prayers are available. Joining now also supports the project, as our members make this work possible, and for that, I’m deeply grateful.
This project has been years in the making, and while it will take time to complete, you don’t have to wait until the full Siddur is published to start engaging with these prayers. By joining now, you’ll not only gain early access but also become part of something much larger-rediscovering the prayers of Yeshua and drawing closer to Him in a Hebrew way.
At holylanguage.com, our focus is on following Yeshua in a Hebrew way, together. My hope is that the First-Century Siddur will help you connect more deeply with Rabbi Jesus through the very prayers He prayed. Let’s embark on this journey together and rediscover the beauty of these timeless prayers.
