I lived here for more than 40yrs in the US I am comfortable and love America but I am lonely here, when I visit the Phil its a different feeling the peoples smiling faces the joyous sound of children playing and laughter even karaoke doesn't bother me at all, I still love to live here in the US but there is part of me longing to go back in the Phil. its happiness of a simple living and always have people around to talk to,

Philippines is so natural, America is most artificial and foods and stuff, etc are not healthy but look at the Philippines, how simple and yet a true beauty of life because Philippines have pure foods from mother earth without toxic chemicals sprayed on them, what a most authentic, irresistibly captivating paradise !

@@Godfirst-g2f I’d say exactly the same with the Philippines even though we may not say it that way. I’m a Filipino yet it still amazes me how very often Filipinos go to church. More than that is the quiet reverence we have for Him and we try to practice this reverence through our family and to people in general. I remember asking my 75 y.o. mom how her generation considered LBTQs when AIDS burst into the scene in the early 1980s (if not even earlier) as she seemed so sad that someone she knew just died from it. With such utter sadness, she said softly, “We are all God’s children, Mel!” If she’s not a true believer, I don’t know who would be.

It IS absolutely about money. Try living without it.
There are a lot of poor people in the world. Tell them your philosophy. I was born in Manila, grew up studied, worked there until I was 33. Then I could not stand the corruption and backbiting anymore and the sexual harassment from the bosses. I got the hell out. My parents and siblings also immigrated. We don't regret our decision.
Stay well and be happy. I did have some good friends and lovely memories.

Happy New Year to you Jay and your family... I am a naturalized Filipino American living in California for the last 40+ years. We migrated here in 1981 and to be honest, even at 18 years of age, I was saying our life back home in Manila was just as good if not better. One thing is for sure: here, we didn't have a live-in maid and had to learn everything, from cooking to doing laundry, etc. As decades passed, I started realizing how much better it is in the Philippines even if just for food in comparison. In the Philippines, the only way you can eat anything with harmful preservatives is if you're too lazy to go to the wet market to get fresh ingredients, fresh fish, meat, and even chicken. Some would say "It is too hot in the Philippines". So what if it's hot in the Philippines? People fail to realize that our body expels toxins through our sweat, so that should be a good thing especially since it's free... the ONLY problem in the Philippines that still exists today is the corruption of the government at all levels. In less than five weeks, I along with my siblings are all flying to Manila to visit friends and family. I can't wait to get there and test if I can still eat Balut hahaha! Anyway, I am glad you found yourself home and I can only hope that you will be treated nicely by my kababayans... take care and God bless you and your family...

I keep reading how corrupt our country is yet I know other countries are just as bad, if not worse. When my Thai husband and I visited Thailand in the 1990s, he showed me the office where his politician bro-in-law kept piles and piles of money that would be gone in 2 hours. The scarier thing is that after 2 hours, the same cycle of piles of money brought in then brought out kept repeating itself. Further, when his bro-in-law would have a party for his constituents, not only would they take home all the food, they’d also bring home forks, spoons, etc. Also, he said that in one election, the then prime minister was named Mr. ATM as one day, all the ATMs ran out of 100 bahts- he took them all to buy votes.
I also worked for an international law firm under a partner who headed our Asian practice in the 1990s. He told me that in Indonesia, they did not want anything under the table. No, they wanted the ENTIRE TABLE. NOT ONLY THAT, THEY WANTED THE HOUSE WHERE THE TABLE WAS, AS WELL AS THE COMMUNITY WHERE THE HOUSE WHERE THE TABLE WAS!
As to Myanmar, UN Sec. Gen. Ban Ki-moon tried to convince the ruling generals in 2008 to allow the UN to help them due to the devastation left by Cyclone Nargis. Nargis killed tens of thousands and uprooted 2.4 million YET the much stronger 2013 Philippine typhoon Yolanda (or Haiyan) killed 6,300. Per Google, “Haiyan was the most powerful tropical cyclone (or typhoon) ever to hit land and perhaps the most powerful in recorded history.” Why the huge difference? Because the ruling Myanmar generals were so scared of their own people, they turned down Ban Ki-moon’s offer as they did not want their people exposed to the outside world. As frustrating as our country may be, we do not have anything commensurate in our history.

I use to live in Montana and would buy 300 pounds of beef at a time. I always brought cardboard boxes to load it. I was thinking about getting a hip/fanny pack to keep my money, phone and wallet in. Did you say 508 Pesos for 1 pound of beef? About $9 US/pound? I'm trying to eat 3 pounds of beef/day in the PH. don' know if I can find it or afford it. My reason for making a move to the PH is to find a loyal wife, and live a simple life. Stay well my friend!

@primalpassion here in the Philippines is would where a fanny pack with absolute pride. It's just a matter of time before I find a cool one 😎. This is Belcris a small local in the city, you can find some things you might not find without traveling to bigger store. For me, it was a quick stop and willing to pay for the convenience that day. But if wife was planning a bigger shopping I would have held off and got it at the cheaper prices. 3 lbs of beef a day here is going to take a bit of figuring out, and trust. …it’s wonderful to see how you have found balance in both sides of the ocean. Kudos to both of you for it takes lots of work to achieve a lifestyle that you are living. I’m a Bay Area CA native, my late Father was Filipino from Leyte and Mum is American of mixed heritage but has home ties with Manila. As a 55 year old tired and retired United Airlines Flight Attendant (Gay of course) residing on my own in Atherton across the street from my 90 year old Mum. So we get asked often why we are not retired in the Philippines and live large for cheap. It wouldn’t be in our case even though we have our family home in Ayala Alabang or in one of our condos in McKinley, life wouldn’t be simple with all the staff needed plus add a range of extended “family” in the mix, it’s just a mess. But the main thing is the heat and humidity and the chaos of the city and being old now with all ailments in tow we do prefer Kaiser here in the Silicon Valley. Good Luck to y’all and much love to the most amazing folks in the Philippines.

Many foreigners from continental countries are surprised about the cost of beef and dairy products in the Philippines, which are cheap staples in their diet. The geography of the islands does not provide vast acres of pastures to raise herds of cows on an industrial scale. Most beef, milk, and authentic cheese need to be imported into the country which means triple the price. But if you are seeking the finest seafood and coconut products, we can satisfy your palate with them at the lowest cost.

Sander Market in Celestine IN (where you bought your meat), their website lists $4.09/Lb for a 175 Lb pack of Steaks, Roasts, and Ground Beef. Seems thats exactly what you bought. Here in Los Angeles, we pay like $10/Lb. Often more like 1$/oz or $16/Lb for USDA rated cuts. Thats supermarket or butcher raw meat, not restaurant prices. Now you paid 508 pesos for 4 large burger patties? Thats about the same here for not-frozen patties of similar size but not sure how the quality compares.

Excluding tenderlon n steaks, beef in general is $8 a kILOGRAM. A KILOGRAM IS ROUGHLY 2 POUNDS . So 300 pounds is roughly 150 kilos. Fresh.giiant grass is available all year-round which is why Philippine native Batangas beef is most delicious in soups n casseroles. They never had anything dried. Their diet is also substituted with a combo of young corn , some moringa and molasses

Was living in the Philly for 3 years but had to move back for my senior MediCare. For those seniors considering retiring to Asia always factor in $400 - $700/mo for FULL healthcare coverage vs. your home country's plan. (e.g. MediCare in the USA $185/mo). In Asia the monthly premium goes up w/ age and pre-existing conditions. Traveling around Asia is great for younger folks but gets old quick for us older gents.
