- Lets face it, game reviews suck.
Unless a game review is stating facts, such as a broken game, bugs or just downright terrible experiences (Gollum Game we're looking at you), what's left is purely opinion and personal taste. This might not reflect the experience you personally will have with that game and as such, you may base your decision on someone else's opinion and miss out on something you'd otherwise enjoy...
Join AJ & Andy discuss why game reviews suck and the most recent controversy over Stellar Blade.

Good discussion. I like user reviews, but I also dig into the details, because sometimes what someone hates is something I would love. My only complaint about Steam reviews is that you have to choose positive or negative. I like number scoring better, because it gives you more granularity. There's a vast difference in how I feel about Witcher 1 and Witcher 3, despite both being positive gaming experiences.
If a game is popular they like to put up the title “reason why (insert name here) is trash” not cause they thought it was bad but cause they know people will click on it
I only care about steam user reviews and only while buying, if its positive I feel I buy the game more comfortably, if its negative I try to understand why before buying and most times I end up skipping it.
Could not care less about gaming "journalists", about games, awards, anything.
God I remember the good old days when you'd see a trailer play the game fully through and then tell all your friends about it whether good or bad. But no its just hype mania get the pre orders in then be totally disappointed as ign give it a 5 or something which then leads to you not playing the game the same.
Those were the days! Less speculative hype back then!
I agree channels like luke stephens where they crique games and tear them down are bad for games,He even says being hype for games makes you stupid, thats his tagline he is still talking about how bad star field is to this day, I dont care wha the reviewers say i just like games
[Very drunk Jane here]
I loved the video. Yeah as someone with an acting background a similar point also applies to movies. The only real difference is movies are all given scores based on how "unique" they are. That's why you get movies like Rise of Skywalker getting a higher score than it deserved because "its different".
I think the problem with game reviews though is reviewers give mediocre games a 10 so that makes a 7 feel low. The way it should work us 1-3 is terrible, 4-6 is just bland and doesn't offer anything new, 7-8 really good, 9 should be "OMG THIS GAME IS AMAZING" and a 10 should be "Omg game of the year".
In regards to the over sexualisation I (a bisexual woman) would love to see more boobies and hot DILFS. My favourite game franchise is Halo because of Mommy Cortana and Sargent Daddy Johnson
I like drunk Jane!!

Totally agree! I love games that I know you two don’t, but you wouldn’t say that are rubbish because it’s opinion. If you don’t like CIV that’s fine, but that is personal taste! Demos are the past and the future heh. Loved the Kirby and the forgotten land demo as me and my son could play enough of it to realise we wanted to buy it! DEMO DEMO DEMO.
I dunno why I threw shade on Civ, it's low key one of my faves... although I'm a war hungry player!!
Same with demos I tried resident evil 2 remake and I loved it if they was not a demo I would not have bought it
Demos for the win. 100%
Couldn't disagree more about reviews, frankly. Without "opinion" (or preferably: well constructed arguments pointing to other games, industry precedents, etc.), reviews would be incredibly dull. I would put SkillUp in the golden bracket here. His review of Stellar Blade was very thoughtful and nuanced, pitched to different audiences too: e.g., if you're a fan of combat systems like these, you'll love it; if you're a Nier fan here for the story, ehhhh maybe not.
I hear you, and to a point agree well balanced opinion and thoughtful comparisons with audience in mind is really useful. The part I start to objection to (and dislike) is the following of bullshit headlines to just downscore a game without any of that balance in mind. It's not a new thing, but a way more visible one now. Stellar Blade got a rough treatment in a lot of the games press and it really didn't deserve it.
