2019 is looking to be one seriously awesome year for the Saturn! Links to everything mentioned are in the description. Also I mispronounced the fan translations title, it's Linkel, not Linker. And let me know what you're most excited for in the comments.
man i hope those new saturn joypads have thumbsticks that are mechanically compatible with another popular console, like ps4, xbone, or even an older ms/sony/ninty controller. there's a lot of cheap aftermarket replacements. sticks are the first thing that breaks on a pad, especially 3rd party pads (they just don't have the manufacturing experience to build durable sticks), and if they use a proprietary form factor you'll be stuck with a 60 dollar paperweight. my pdp fight pads broke after 1 game! and pdp is nintendo licensed!
There's already been a few reviews of the standard pads released. So far the reviews have been mostly favorable. Personally I have about 10 of em, so no real need for more. But I completely on on the dual thumbstick pads. It would be amazing to use one on the PS4 or PC for fighters and shooter, granted the quality is up to snuff.
@@TheSouthernSegaGentleman i don't mean using the pad on ps4 or pc, i mean i wish the thumbsticks themselves - the plastic piece you manipulate - were compatible with ones from a common console, so there are easily available spare parts
Ah! I get what you're putting down now. That would be awesome. By the looks of them, they look like PS4 or maybe PS3 in styling, but we'll have to wait and see.
A friend recently gave me his old Saturn so I'm excited to be joining the community this year! Glad to see all the old Sega consoles are still alive and kicking!
I mean... an ODE is what negates a CD drive, in that it literally replaces the CD drive. The Satiator is great cause it allows you to have both. However, unlike a simple drive emulator that does just that (emulate a CD drive), this kit gains low level access to the system through the daughter board and could open up a slew of future exploits or enhancements to the system. Professor Abrasive himself started this whole thing to gain access to the sound system. I can only imagine Satiator owners will be buying into that possibility as well. Great video, Sam! :)
I mean my only concern is when you unlock locked system parts its similar to overclocking and can burn through all the hardware faster. Just lowers the life of many things.
....and that "Everdrive" for Saturn will negate the use of the CD drive, meaning, even if your disc drive is dead, you can still use it, not to mention it'll lessen wear and tear on the laser pickup. Faster load times? I can't wait!!! BTW, this is your best video that I've watched. I wish I had your gift of gab. Love the "news" style of it. All this stuff you mentioned I'm looking forward to... cause we're in the same boat... die hard Saturn fans.
All true, sometimes you just forget to mention some things, but thank you for letting everyone else know! And thanks man, it really when ya'll give me criticism and support.
@Rex Warden Exactly! So hard to get one. It's like winning the lottery. I gave up trying to get the Rhea and that other Dreamcast one. Even if you're willing to pay the steep price to boot. Hopefully, this alternative will be released to the public in the proper numbers.
@Rex Warden I was checking out the Satiator... and what I don't get is that it's on Patreon. I really think the project would have more success on something like Kickstarter. On Patreon, what would differentiate guys on the $1/month tier from the $10/month tier besides helping out the project and keeping the lights on? I think it would make much more sense to get an estimate for the entire project, and make that a goal. If the numbers ain't reached, then up the price for each supporter and see if that will make it come to fruition. Also, I haven't seen the project mentioned on the more mainstream Sega news sites that are still operating... like SegaBits. I need to do my part and get the word going!
Oh, BTW, here's more advantages of a disc-less Saturn •Improved power efficiency since the laser assembly will not be in use •Improved power efficiency mean less heat dissipation, meaning a cooler running Saturn •A cooler running Saturn means improved lifespan due to less heat related failures.
Just picked up a Saturn late last year and have been slowly getting games for it. Have had a Dreamcast for a bit now as well. Over the past year I've become a giant SEGA fan and it's the most lovely coincidence that 2019 is looking to be so good for the underrated 2D monster. Thanks for a nice, clean video covering some great info!

Man, so refreshing to hear the positivity on the Saturn. And what a great overview of what’s up with the SS these days. I finally picked up my copy of Panzer Saga, and had NO IDEA I happen to be coming back to the Saturn at the same time so many others are just discovering it.
One of the best - fucking - Saturn videos yet! Not even exaggerating, and it' not because we're buds. This is beyond well done, bro. I'm sharing this shit.
Great video! I'm a huge Saturn fan like yourself, last month I purchased my fourth Saturn, a Victor Model 2. One thing you forgot to mention about the value that the Satiator has is that it doesn't burn out your disc drive. Every disc drive eventually dies out, I'm sure over the years many Saturns were tossed out or placed in the back of a closet because of this, but with the Satiator, a dead disc drive is no longer a problem, the Saturn will continue to be worthwhile for every single game! Woohoo! The Satiator isn't just about piracy, its so much more than that, its about posterity, for the sake of the Saturn to continue to thrive and be valuable, even when the quickest-to-die component, the disc drive no longer functions. This means less tossed out Saturns into landfills. You can even purchase a 'broken disc drive Saturn' off ebay and it won't be an issue. Which I believe is something we can all be happy about! Professor Abrasive is doing important work for gaming's posterity!
That's been mentioned a number of times by others as well. Honestly I haven't been to up to speed with Professor Abrasives work. Mainly because I run all of my consoles modded. The points you and others have brought up do peak my interest though. Hopefully we have this in our hands sooner rather than later, that way we can see just what this thing is capable of.
It's an awesome little action RPG man, really enjoyed the time I spent with it. I plan on cover the full game in the future since I've finally gotten my custom NA Lonbox Reproduction. BTW, you had me worried when I saw my face on one of your thumbnails 🤣 Thought you were about to get radical on me!
Great video, dude 🖒 That RPG looks great - hopefully we see some nice looking repros for it on Etsy soon 😎 I agree 2019 is the year for the Saturn as more and more people are discovering it's unique and quality filled library. Linkle Liver Story looks great. An actual new game and a fully functional flash cart in development? This might actually be the Saturn's best year. Thank for the head's up on all of this stuff.
im happy about the fan translation that game always looked really cool. and i hope many others will get this treatment real soon because there is so many saturn RPG's that look really great. a new 2D fighter sounds great to me
I love the Saturn 1gen controller, the big one, that's why I bought the Saturn, it was a beautiful futuristic design. And great news of Professor Abrasive's Satiator, there are no better reasons to start the year.Great video, greetings from Costa Rica.
@rickshanahan appreciate ya reaching out, and I'm glad to know that y'all are still coming back to my videos all these years later. I can say a thousand things, but instead, I'll just say this. I do want to come back, I just don't know when that day will be. Family has been top of my list when I'm actually home, and by that, I mean not hours or states away. And that time has been very slim these last few years. But seeing comments like this and others remind me why I do plan on returning. Besides that, the family is great, and those kids of mine are growing like weeds, especially when it's weeks in between seeing them. Thank you again man, and I hope to see your name pop up again in these comment sections in the future.
It's an awesome little action rpg man, looking forward to covering it in it's entirety rather than this little intro. A good buddy of mine has a fully translated NA longbox style manual and art insert in the works for it. Gonna be awesome to display that by the Custom Christmas NiGHT's box art he did as well.
The Saturn is one of my favorites too. The controller is highly overlooked. It's the best controller for fighting games, hands down. Those Capcom fighters on the system are such a treat!
I remembered having a Saturn I picked it up for 19.99 at Game Crazy. Found a few games at my local flea market. It was hard to find games for it and still is in my neck of the woods in North East TX. So I sold it on EBay 13 years ago to some college kid is Kansas for 34.00 lol and never seen one since.
@@TheSouthernSegaGentleman My buddy has a broken Saturn you think I should pick it up and try to get it fixed and a Mic chipped put in it. Saturn's are hard to come by in this area.
So, if you have PsudoSaturn, you can burn Linkle to a disc and play the patches version, right? Do they have proper case artwork? I have some blank Sega CD tall boxes, and would love to print out the manual, and case artwork.
That's exactly right. As for atwaork, there are a number on individuals in the Saturn Facebook community who have created some custom case art for the longboxes.
I'm super excited about the Satiator. I have a Rhea and Phoebe, which are great, especially because my drives went out. I think it solves two really irksome problems, wearing down older drives by using burns and having to remove possibly working drives to get an SD-card-based solution. I've had three Saturns where the drives have bombed out, so I'd like to be as gentle with the other two as possible. One thing I noticed about those new Saturn controllers is the plastic on the directional pad looks more like the original type than what's been used in those later, similar controllers from MadCatz and the like. Hopefully they'll be as responsive.
@@TheSouthernSegaGentleman Oh, I'm definitely cautious about them, especially after I picked up a few of the Sega Club ones that Sega released for PC that turned out to be trash. At least the shells could be reused.
@@TheSouthernSegaGentleman what do I need for a Sega Saturn besides a controller, memory card and what games you recommend for Sega Saturn? (Do I ordered a modded Sega Saturn that can play USA and Japanese translated games
If you're just getting into it, and don't want to pay out the ass, first get a Saturn modded with a region bypass and a phantom universal chip (allows for playing burned games). Then get a stack of CDR's. If you want legit games, the look at getting imports from Japan. As for what games I recommend, that depends on your taste in gaming.
Never would have thought that Linkle Liver Story would be playable in English someday. I played it right after finishing Crusader of Centy (by the same developers apparently) and honestly, I was disappointed. Great artwork yes, and it conveys an original "universe" with character personalities and unique locations. But the most important part of an action RPG is the dungeons, and LLS just doesn't have them.
Products like the Satiator are gonna be the only way to play the rare and expensive games in years to come. You would think prices on games would come down because of all these flash carts existence...but we are not that lucky.
Until the "collectors" market dies down, and people get back to playing games for the sake of actually playing them, I doubt prices will ever drop. That said, play em, I dont care how you acquire them LOL
ODE replacement requires you to open up your system and make changes. Everdrive type units (including the satiator and psuedo saturn) are using an existing port to expand capabilities. That is a huge downside to the Pheobe/Rhea to me. I believe the Pseudo Saturn team is working on an update to allow loading of games off of the SD card slot in some of the supported cards, as well. It'll be interesting to see how both of these options play out as the year progresses. SSG - is there a link to the new 2D fighter? I love finding new things to try out on my Saturn. It's sad how quickly Sega of America ditched the Saturn in the US, when so many amazing game experiences were still being released for the system years later in Japan.
Loosing the disc drive does very much have it's down sides. Im down for any new peripheral that's allows more people to enjoy the system, in fact I'll be discussing that in a not so far off video. As for a link, I linked JoshProd's FB page in the description. That's all the public info that's available atm.
Its amazing how even today all these years later the saturn is getting such earnest support and it only keeps growing every year! Thanks for shedding some light on it SSG only makes me more excited to one day own my own saturn! ps. I smell 2d fighter hehe LETS GET READY TO RUMMMMMMMMMBLLLLLLEE
I'm really looking forward to the wireless controllers. Just picked up a SEGA saturn about 2 months ago since I never had one as a kid, but yeah it is an awesome but expensive system as you mentioned.
Love to try out and get my hands on the new Saturn controllers! I also look forward to using them towards BBTAG (most likely going to use an adapter rather than USB [most retro-style USB controllers are ugly, ugh. It’s like they’re out of ideas or copied from the original and often have poor build quality, but kudos go to retro-bit for dual-link controllers because they had decent build quality and you could play those controllers on your PC or the original hardware itself] because I prefer that method, and there are ways how, believe me) because of the new character (can you guess who?), as she reminds me of Sega Saturn fighters. I fucking love (anime-style) 2D fighting games! And the Saturn controller suits well for them. Really excited for what retro-bit has in stock. Not to mention, that Saturn controller with the 2 analog sticks reminds me of what 8bitdo would do, they are making a M30 controller which I must get my hands on. Really want Switch to have a 6-button controller asides that but that is a different story. Oh. Did I forget to mention that Retro Fighters is getting in on the action with their upcoming BrawlerGen? It will be compatible with both Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and Sega Saturn!
Arcana Heart is very reminiscent of Sega Saturn fighters, does anyone else think that? With a debut in BBTAG, this is when a Saturn controller would go well with it. Possibly others. I imagine it would also go well with BlazBlue or Blade Arcus and all those other 2D fighters today where the Saturn controller goes well with.
The Satiator sounds awesome! I wonder if it's feasible in a future update to add MPEG support? I'd be very interested at that point, especially if they can keep it at around the cost of an Everdrive/SD2SNES price point. That would honestly be my favorite way to try new games and translations, even over the Pseudo Saturn, since there are some compatibility issues still. I like the option to use or not use my actual CD Drive as well. My only real issue with the current state of GD Drive replacements at this point. I honestly hope someone finds a suitable laser replacement for it in the near future since that seems to be the Dreamcast's weakest point at the moment.
Hardware failures are most certainly the biggest issue facing retro gamers in this day and age, so I couldn't agree more with the need for new replacement components.
You can damage your disc drive and wear it out repeatedly swapping disc. Also, there's the possibility of damaging the actual legit game you use to start the process. If you're already burning games, then i'd suggest either getting a mod chip or a cartridge with Pseudo Saturn Kai loaded onto it. Both are relatively inexpensive, sub $50 USD.
Wow, Saturn got some nice hidden gems. I wonder why there is so many troubles with those translations? Wouldn't it be easier to simply upload disks images with already applied patches?
Man I'd be lying if I told you I knew. A good friend of mine whose gone now got that for me a number of years ago. But I'm pretty sure he ordered off of some custom coffee mug website back around 2013.
Would love to see fan made version of Resident Evil 2 even if it took 3 or 4 disc's to make it possible. I wish they'd translate an English version of Street Fighter Zero 3.

Need to get that Saturn situation fixed quick brother!
@@TheSouthernSegaGentleman some day soon when im not a poor schmuck jimmy boy I gotta get this video out first
Saturn my fav all-time!
Dope review bro
Great production quality. I learned a few things to make better videos for my channel. Keep it up, brother.
Appreciate it brother, and glad I could give you a few new ideas.
I approve of this video...
I'm really looking forward to the wireless controllers. Just picked up a SEGA saturn about 2 months ago since I never had one as a kid, but yeah it is an awesome but expensive system as you mentioned.
SEGA should release a Saturn MINI.
Got a video in the works on that very topic.
Looks like a great video btw fyi you misspelt fan in the title
Fixed it!! 🤣🤣 its 2am here man
@@TheSouthernSegaGentleman no worries we all make mistakes 👍
Blaze Blue with a Saturn pad would be absolutely amazing!
New to the Sega Saturn club, so I have to ask, while I wait for the Satiator, what's wrong with disk swapping? Does it damage the Saturn?
You can damage your disc drive and wear it out repeatedly swapping disc. Also, there's the possibility of damaging the actual legit game you use to start the process. If you're already burning games, then i'd suggest either getting a mod chip or a cartridge with Pseudo Saturn Kai loaded onto it. Both are relatively inexpensive, sub $50 USD.
New subscriber!!!
We will make station wagons great again brother, but first there's Saturn!
Where can I find that box art you showed at 0:44?? Would love to use that
That would be the custom NA artwork that David Lee of Sega Saturn, Shiro! did. He'd be the man to get a hold of.
Where do I aquire a reproduction english copy? 0:42
David Lee would be your man. You can find him on Facebook under the name " S A T U R N D A V E "
Wow, Saturn got some nice hidden gems. I wonder why there is so many troubles with those translations? Wouldn't it be easier to simply upload disks images with already applied patches?
Linkle Liver Story
I want that dual analog SS controller so bad. They still didn't release it!
Hey SSG! Where can I get an awesome coffee mug like that?
Man I'd be lying if I told you I knew. A good friend of mine whose gone now got that for me a number of years ago. But I'm pretty sure he ordered off of some custom coffee mug website back around 2013.
where did ya go buddy ?
And Streets of Rage 4 from Sega! 🤷🏻♂️
That is in fact happening, but unfortunately not for the Saturn.
Would love to see fan made version of Resident Evil 2 even if it took 3 or 4 disc's to make it possible. I wish they'd translate an English version of Street Fighter Zero 3.
Subbed
Dude, if anybody says shit to you about loving the Saturn, they need to go to hell. I LOVE THE SATURN!! I bought a Japanese Saturn in early 1995, BEST GAMING DECISION, EVER!!! I LIVED the Japanese Saturn era and it was fucking amazing.
I used to go into Sydney city every fortnight to but Saturn FAN from a Japanese book store. It was so exciting opening that book every week and looking at the progress of games I knew about and seeing the big news, new announcements as well.... Ahhhh, it was an amazing 4 years.... *sniff*
Any SEGA fan and Saturn fan is fucking awesome in my book!
Appreciate it brother, glad to have another die hard Saturn fan in the comments.
Resident Evil 2 for Saturn Please!
RAD channel
I'm gonna keep doing the disk swap until I do an SD card mod. Sorry not sorry xD
That disk drive ain't gonna last forever brother LOL
@@TheSouthernSegaGentleman Then I will SD mod it :3 It's been working fine since I was a kid, so if it breaks that's just an excuse for me to get an SD card reader.
Crap... time to look for a good Saturn emulator.
Mednafen or Yababuse are the way to go man.
@@TheSouthernSegaGentlemanYababuse worked... weirdly to me. It doesn't recognize my pad buttons. I think I'll have to use Mednafen then. I want to play Keio Falying Squadron 2.
Most people I know who emulate primarily use yabu man.
