A REAL stoic!!! Yes! But like real Christians or any religion or philosophy people who really practice ir are so rare!!!! The same with people who claim to be patriots!!!
I stopped listening to Peterson after (sadly) he began having problems with depression despite preaching about how easy it is to beat. Then I started looking more closely at other things he said and realized that much of it was nonsense dressed up with fancy words.
Yeah, he's increasingly opposed to basic compassion and empathy for people and it's troubling to hear him insist that these things are bad when they've been the key to our success as a species
Many people won’t understand how risky it was for Ryan to make a video like this. Potentially going against 50% of Americans, some that could be in his audience and hurt his business but speaking the truth anyways. Thank you Ryan, gained even more respect for you! I'll be honest, I lost some respect for him. There's plenty to criticize about these individuals, but some of the examples struck me as a lazy excuse to write off someone's message he doesn't agree with. Somehow I have a hard time imagining the stoics he speaks of would think very highly of any of our world or industry leaders. It would be interesting to know the political demographics of Ryan's primary audience.
I am so glad that the Daily Stoic found its way into my feed. These discussions are some of the most interesting, well thought out and interesting presentations I have heard. So thanks Ryan. @@cchia6640 Ego is everything stoicism warns about. Egotism is a pathology that in service of plastering your own name on something disregards the sacrifice of many. Egos destroy what the many build.
@@markd.9538 this just isn't true. Sure it's easy to be yourself from the perspective that you aren't having to be fake. But there are challenges that can stand in the way nonetheless. This is why Marcus Aurelius writes about how he overcomes challenges in his own life. He talks about "holding the reins in your non-dominant hand", he talks about controlling your emotions and ego. He doesn't say people don't have emotions and ego, being your true self, your best self, means having mastery over those things. It takes a level of mastery over one's emotions and ego to avoid audience capture and to speak truth to power.

Trashing JP was anything but fair. He’s clearly not informed about Peterson and he made him look like some crazy far right personality. That’s a huge distortion of reality and I completely disagree with your statement about fairness and facts. I have no doubt he actually really believes what he says about JP but he completely reduced him to just one dimensional character and even that one characterization is not correct. He’s not a bully at all, he just speaks the truth. You can’t fight evil forces with being nice, that’s like fighting nature only with your passion, like the case of McCandles.

Trump: A poor man's idea of what a rich man looks like. Tate: A weak man's idea of what a strong man looks like. Peterson: An ignorant man's idea of what a smart man looks like. The three horsemen of deception.
As someone with much criticism of these men in some actions and contexts, I think that if those are the only attributes you take away from another individual you are doing yourself a disservice by distilling your perceived adversaries into a sentence and dismissing their opinions entirely. Successful people often are successful because they are speaking to something that resonates with the experiences and needs of many, and often the majority. Just because that is not your experience, this prejudice against your fellow citizens exposes a prejudice against those you do not fully understand, which is the definition of xenophobia, which I'm sure you'd agree is wrong. To distill 50% of America and much of the world as poor, weak, and ignorant articulates that you have missed a great deal about the stoic philosophy. A very emotional, disrespectful, and irrational response when addressing your fellow citizen and human as they try to speak to the problems the problems they encounter in their lives.
@@rgal42 If you extract positive attributes from those individuals, that is entirely your problem regarding how lightly you judge other people, or another example of the "There's good in everybody" fallacy. Tate is in literal terms a pimp that prostituted young and underage girls from a legally ambiguous country, and even said country got simply fed up with him bragging about his immunity. Peterson is a mid-level academic that pontificates as if he was the second coming of Aristotle, while he would simply be laughed out of any philosophy department in any University by the sheer reason that his academic corpus is, at best, a regurgitation of other authors without the slightest improvement on the original opus, at worst, a charlatan that gives discount motivational speeches about mental fortitude while being unable to maintain a 45 minutes conversation without breaking into tears himself.

I’ve been reading thru this comment section and there is a lot of disagreement but very few actual reasons why. I think this actually makes its own point. The right has become more faith based than reason based. It’s not a disagreement of ideas; it’s a protection of one’s ideology. More a matter of slogans than real thinking.

I agree with the essential point Ryan is making re: psychedelics - they’re not a replacement for hard-won wisdom and should be used with caution. But what they can offer is a brief window into a deeper knowledge, a deeper experience of being. And I believe most people could benefit greatly from having that experience. But I strongly disagree with Ryan’s characterization of most people who use psychedelics as evangelizing for them or needing to do them again and again. I haven’t done psychedelics in years, and I rarely bring them up in conversation. But I’ll be glad to tell you how they’ve changed my life. The dangers of psychedelics are real and should be discussed before using them. But I’m glad I’ve used them. They helped expand my understanding of reality, and break out of a myopic materialist worldview that wasn’t helping me live a good life. They could do a a lot of good for a lot of folks.
@RickRoy117 Psychedelics can kill your ego but they can also inflate it if you misuse them. I would suggest doing a lot of research and being very mindful of your intentions. Practice meditation before you dose. Plan everything out and take notes before during and after the trip. Do your own research, because psychedelics affect everyone a little differently. I think a good starter psychedelic is 1.5grams of psilocybin mushrooms or 100 micrograms of LSD (a 100ug tab from the street is usually only 60-80ug, which is a safer dose to start with).
I'm glad you trying to take stoicism back to it's origins. People these days are corrupting the meaning of philosophy for their own gains, and you are making clear what this thing is all about. Ryan, your knowledge of Stoic principles is clear, and there’s an opportunity here to bring even more wisdom to your message. Stoicism is about embodying virtues like humility, compassion, and fairness-setting aside personal biases to focus on universal values. One of the highlights of the video for me was your counterargument to those saying 'not to have a morning routine.' That perspective really shows the practical value Stoicism can offer in daily life. Similarly, maybe there’s an opportunity to apply that same open-minded approach to figures like Elon, Andrew, or Jordan. The internet only shows us fragments, and sound bites rarely tell the whole story. Perhaps putting yourself in their shoes and really listening to their perspectives before drawing conclusions could align with a more Stoic approach. As you recounted in Jeff Bezos’ story, his grandfather told him it’s easier to be clever than to be kind. Following that advice could be an even better representation of Stoicism here. With your platform, you have the chance to inspire others by focusing on what makes a great leader or true Stoic rather than calling people 'losers.' Imagine how impactful it would be to guide people toward these values by modeling them in action. Wisdom isn’t just knowing these principles-it’s about applying them with openness and equanimity. Using your influence this way could deepen the Stoic message you’re sharing.
I think a lot of us have such a visceral reaction to trump because we strive to follow stoicism, and trump embodies every trait we want to leave behind.

You channel is a fresh breath of air and it’s great seeing you stand on your beliefs.
You nailed it-if it works for you, it works for you. For me, what made a difference was aligning the insights from all the guys you mentioned. I took what resonated, what felt right for me, and used it to become a better version of myself. That growth also allowed me to be better for those around me. I encourage everyone to watch this entire video, even if you don’t agree with everything at first. Stay open-minded, and see what resonates and can help you on your journey. Remember to lift weights and not just run.

Love this format of video, there's a lot of advice out there and it's really interesting to see it through the lens of stoicism!
He has helped millions of people. Yet, some of his advice is not practical for the modern era. Example: Religion is as divisive as many other categorical group associations. Ultimately, it cannot be our guiding light out of the cycles we are in.
Agreed. This is true AND he’s been acting like an idiot in public. People are complicated. But if Peterson is going to insist on living in public, he needs to be publicly called out.
Hello, Ryan. I disagree with the section on Jordan Peterson, and I think the analysis wasn't accurate. I would say that the people who want to put you in jail because you don't want to speak a certain way are the bullies, not the guy who says "hell no."
Nobody was putting anyone in jail. I'm a Canadian lawyer and am familiar with the law on this. It's a total farce. JBP created that myth to convince people he was fighting a noble fight against tyranny instead of just being an antisocial dick.
Seriously. I’m baffled that a brilliant guy such as Ryan wouldn’t bother to actually hear what Jordan Peterson has to say and jump to conclusions like “for shits and giggles, because he likes the attention, because he’s a bigot?” This tells me that even brilliant people, such as he and Jordan, have irrational blind spots, and you can’t blindly follow anyone.
I gotta defend Jordan here. Him choosing not to subscribe to language that is apart of an ideology he doesn’t agree with is one of the more stoic things a modern man can do. “Let them call you mad and a fool, one day they will call you wise” Almost 10years ago Jordan Peterson would discuss the dangers of pronouns evolving in society and the consequences that everyone would have as part of this. If people who have pronouns MUST be called this and that then maybe we should show them some works of Epictetus to instill the idea that we can only control what’s within OUR control. Flash forward to today and kids and adults alike are being forced to use language they don’t agree with in university settings. Outside of a clinical setting NOBODY has an obligation to use forced language. Jordan is the forefront for this message.
JP 1.0 was more considerate in what he said and produced some pretty high quality lectures. JP 2.0 after his health issues, seemed less considerate, intelligent and added a pinch more erratic eccentricity in his rhetoric. I feel for peterson he's just a man getting old and ill, with millions of people suddenly thinking he is some sort of saviour of the intellectual right, exactly at the moment his powers in that area seem to be dimming. There is a brittleness to this version of peterson imo. And his inability to interrogate peoples ideas on his podcast makes it very boring for the non partisan listener. I like his conversations with John vervake but when he finds himself regularly out of depth in politics etc, I just feel embarrassed for him.
@@Thomas...191 I disagree. JP makes a pretty good podcast host. He's mostly razor sharp in his questioning and allows the guest to speak, unlike a lot of other podcast hosts. You reproach him for not being able to interrogate people's ideas and the fact that he seems out op depth on various subjects. Quick reminder: everybody is out of depth on particular subjects, and for most people these particular subjects would be almost every subject. In my opinion Jp does a formidable job engaging with his host as far as he is able to. It's almost like some people selectively try to discredit prominent public figures based on a few bad takes and thereby paint them as if they are charlatans. Content creators create content for you to consume and for them to make money from mostly. Really look into why they are saying what they are saying. What are they doing and why? Discernment takes time to develop. Anything of value takes hard work to attain. Don’t take the low hanging fruit. Climb the tree maybe.
The argument against psychedelics that they need to be done "over and over again" does not hold water. Did you read Meditations just once and got set up for life? No, you need to return to Stoicism over and over again throughout your life.
Dr. Peterson had the entire Canadian government against him, the majority of media, and academia against him-especially while he was experiencing his own family health issues-and you think he was still “punching down”? Respectfully disagree Ryan.
Think about the carefully crafted narrative of victimhood you just laid out, all antithetical to stoicism. Being a malignant fountain and being a crybully are not mutually exclusive traits, and in fact, are often combined to create a more exploitive cocktail that robs us of peace, agency and objectivity.
Yeah, that martyrdom line is too simplistic. I don't think the politics realm suits him either, his innately agreeable disposition leads him to feel disagreements as physical attacks and agreement as a soothing balm, the latter of these issues makes his conversational podcast with political guests incredibly boring.
Peterson has clearly changed. He is a troubled man who has faith issues because he actually read the bible and it's clear he cannot make the text make sense. That hurts ... I know that hurts. In his quest for defending the faith he has twisted his own mind and turned into something I cannot consider a person to be respected. It's easier to be clever than it is to be kind. Peterson lost his kindness ... with all due respect.
In this specific example, the version of JP that you described was still emphatic, or at least was willing to show a general level of respect by using the proper pronouns, even if he didn't believe in it. But the current version of JP is definitely a bully, and a less introspective caricature of his former self. The old version pushed back against an idea without insulting a person, the new version insults a person to make a point. He is more influential than ever, and richer than ever. Power seems to have corrupted him.
The only issue with your points on some of these people is assuming everyone they give advise to is a stoic like yourself, unfortunately 99% are not and I feel the advise is fair. Most don't have pride, most don't work hard enough, most are afraid to think for themselves because of who it could offend, most claim being depressed instead of taking Accountability for the wrong choices they make continually putting themselves in this unhappy state....still love the video though!

What an incredibly wise video, which to your point, is incredibly rare to see on TH-cam. Thank you for countering the unbelievably popular people and their incredibly destructive paradigms; namely, selfishness, greed, ego, and lack of empathy. God bless, my friend.
Thank you Ryan for this video! You have provided invaluable advice and insight as well as debunking notions that are either erroneous or against Stoicism.
It's progressivism masquerading as stoicism. He's a horrible representation of a real stoic. What he defends in this video is hedonism, which is just absurd for somebody who pretends to extol the virtue of wisdom, yet can't seem to find the wisdom when it conflicts with his political ideology.
We have a lot to learn from stoicism. Marcus Aurelius was a great philosopher, and his Meditations are definitely worth reading. Thank you for bringing his wisdom into this insane world. It helps to keep positive when things go wild.
Thank you so much for risking alienating some of your audience by exposing the grift of these guys. You may be the voice that finally reveals to them that their Emperor has no clothes.
Full quote of #1 is "Show me someone without an ego, and I'll show you a loser - having a healthy ego, or high opinion of yourself, is a real positive in life!" Ryan is either lying or is too lazy to do a basic google search.
When you talk about stoic virtues like empathy, it’s also important to talk about the fact that there are many, many bad actors in the world. We live in an age where, for example, it’s really trendy to self diagnose depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, etc to justify bad behavior or egoism personal accountability. Sometimes being a good person is not showing blind empathy to any and everyone who makes a claim about their suffering. Sometimes people are trying to take advantage of you or dodge consequences for their actions. This can be devastating to society if not checked. People lie, virtue signaling is often a motive, and victimhood is commonly worn as a badge of honor. I think that’s why some of the guys you mentioned have gained popularity; young men gravitate toward them because they see all of the nonsense and then the overcorrect by being mean and dismissive to everyone.
Don't want to hear you talking about self diagnosis unless you are a mental health professional. It doesn't matter what people say about themselves to you, if you claim to be a stoic you should be emotionally equipped to deal with dysregulated people without it affecting you. Your claim that this way of being is damaging to society in the future is based on what? I believe it is far less damaging that irrational fear and anger directed at the "other". The mis self diagnosis and over correction towards what you suggest is misplaced empathy is just because these topics of mental health have only just become mainstream. The knowledge for the layman is not sufficient as of yet and will see less of this as time moves on not more. Consider the heirachy of needs: cost of living, opiod epidemic, street drugs, homelessness create far more problems than what you in a round about way are referring to, the moral failings of people who don't think as you do.
Great topic for the most part - Glad someone is calling out psychedelics. The last thing a society experiencing an addiction epidemic needs is more drugs. Also - Peterson does not deserve to be on this list. He is not punching down and is very much a thorn in the side of the elites.
Yeah I'm a little confused about that as well. It seems like Holiday watched one or two clips of Peterson deadnaming Elliot Page and assumed that that's all he does. Just offend for the sake of offense, then take cover under "in order to think, you have to risk being offensive." It's fine if Holiday leans left but it's as if he allowed the TH-cam algorithm to dictate what research he does for this video.
@@BFrydell ... You guys mean Jordan Peterson, the guy mostly famous for lying about some Canadian law that would supposedly prosecute people for misgendering? Very strange choice to defend such an explicit bad faith actor, who only cares about promoting his authoritarian politics rather than truth. Very strange indeed.
Every time I see someone seeing "parallels" between ancient Stoicism, and Peterson, or even Christianity... I wonder ... Does this person even know anything what the Stoics said? They are polar opposites.... After reading all of Seneca's letters, you will see Christianity for what truly it is: a primate blood-magic, with a religion of Power ... unworthy of a civilized human to follow it.
He's really not... He's a part of the daily wire now, a coalition of conservative pundits paid by billionaires to funnel deceit and division to continue propping up the uber wealthy. He's nothing more than another shill now.
Psychedelics are a challenge to get addicted to. They are akin to temporary enlightenment. They make you feel egoless and unity with the entire universe. They can inflate ego and be fun, sure, but who cares if people have a little fun? Most people use psychedelics very rarely, even when it is purely recreational. In addition to this, psychedelics have a rapidly building tolerance. If I trip today on 100ug of LSD, tomorrow I’d need at least 200, the next day I’d need 600, the next day I’d need to completely saturate my serotonin receptors to feel the trip. They really are sorta self correcting in this aspect. You have to microdose to feel anything daily
I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on these topics. I disagree with you though on the "follow your passion" advice. At 50 years old I started working on the side at something I have been passionate about all my life. It has made such a positive impact on me. I love the work, I love helping people with something I enjoy and I'm good at. It doesn't pay the bills and I still work my main job, but following my passion is something I wish I would have started doing many years ago. It's very possible it could have been my main source of income. All in all it was a thoughtful video, Ryan.

wow, this nails it right on the head. It’s sad it’s come to this.
Brilliant breakdown
Succinct, perfect analysis
No, sorry, Trump is a trust-fund kid that has spent his entire adulthood cosplaying as a businessman while he is nothing but a showbiz personality.

@mejohn101 The title of the video is "The Worst Advice on The Internet". Ryan shows a quote by JBP and agrees with it even expounding on it. Then goes on to attack JBP saying "When I watch Jordan Peterson repeatedly dead name someone for I don't know what. Shits and giggles? Because he is a bigot? Because he likes the attention?"
Oxford dictionary defines a straw man argument as "an intentionally misrepresented proposition that is set up because it is easier to defeat than an opponent's real argument."
Ryan is an incredibly intelligent and talented man. He either is willfully ignorant of JBP's motive or he is intentionally misrepresenting his position.
As far as my comment being "pseudo-intellectual". I see how you could see it that way with no context. I assumed that anyone who watched the video would be able to recognize the fallacy. I was/am not obligated to elaborate.
I picked up the term "straw man" in a college English class that was focused on arguments. It doesn't matter where the term is picked up, if understood and used correctly. Just pointing that out to show that it wasn't picked up in "podcast land".
Even if someone did pick it up from a podcast that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Podcasts can be good or bad, depending on what you listen too. I'm more of a book reader myself. Don't listen to podcasts frequently.
I stated in the comment that I am a fan of both. Neither are "my guy". I probably agree with both of them 9 times out of 10, I just don't agree with what Ryan said about JBP in this video.

@Frank-w5t I don't know if there is one definitive idea of what is Stoicism. Seneca noted that he didn't want to live by the values put forth centuries before him, and that he wanted to add or detract so that it becomes a living breathing philosophy that can be applied to the ever changing life.
I like reading his books because he is actually a good writer. His words are articulate and beautifully expressed. Whether or not he embodies everything he writes about is not for me to judge as I don't believe any person is perfect in anything. I have noticed that he has a lot of videos of himself, but that is simply in passing rather than a bone of contention.

@Frank-w5tstoics were famous for criticizing people who were in power but were bad people. Cato criticized and went to war against Julius Caesar… Seneca was sent away by another emperor… maybe you should try to learn a little bit more about stoicism. It takes courage to speak truth to this people.

He is breaking a rule and is drawing penalties left right and centre on this video and is unfortunately showing how immature he is. You are not allowed to explicitly disagree with someone unless it is absolutely necessary. In this video he is going out of his way to miss the point of every quote I've seen so far. The point of language is to broaden understanding. To explicitly disagree with someone is explicitly to miss that point
Especially when the whole mainstream media is being silent about it and speaking out will get you cancelled..
Props for being real Ryan. Respect.
I’m trying to use the Stoic principle of worrying does nothing. When you fear the thing that will happen before it happens, you suffer twice. Let’s hope and have optimism. We can no longer control or stop Trump being inaugurated, so we have to do right where we can and focus on what we can control.
Thank you Ryan for making this video. It helps to prove to myself that you are not using stocism to promote an endless grind towards glory and “success” that some of these broicists do. 👍🏻
Thanks for bringing back my faith in stoicism. These internet personalities have hijacked the concepts and passed them off in a bastardized version, appreciate you for speaking in your truth.

Good observation. I’ve seen the same thing.
I see the opposite. The left have become ideological zealots. The left don't chant slogans?
I haven't. I think the left is equally as guilty of this. There is nothing brave about taking a 50 percent popular opinion and disagreeing with an other 50 percent popular opinion. Its exactly what it was designed for
Holiday no more represents “real thinking” than they do. And if it is really only now occurring to you that the right is ideological, you’re just $tupid.
You could literally say the same thing about the left >.>
Jordan petersons psychology videos changed my life
And he's still a rightwing conspiracy crank.
I don't doubt that. He's original lecture series is really quite something valuable, and when he sticks to fundamentals, he is an expert on pyschology. But in the last few years he has broken away from that, and I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that he has lost his mind.
I think Ryan is just following a law of power to select a few "enemies" or plainly niching his stoic advice to the cultural left. Either way, it's too bad, because I hoped his work could be apolitical. Robert Greene at least criticizes everyone, which gives him a more trustworthy work
Hope you can recover and regain your own personal agency
Speaking for myself and I think the majority of women who have listened to Jordan Peterson, I must agree with our friend the Daily Stoic, he's a bully who punches down (and, my own impression, is misogynistic); therefore, as far as I'm concerned, whatever advice he might share has no worth to me. I think a real moral philosophy does not impose itself on others, rather it enlightens through example and fair questioning. However, I am happy his advice changed your life, I hope it was for the better.
Your decision to make this video exemplifies your deep commitment to stoic values. You really are living up to “Courage is Calling: Fortune Favors the Brave.” Bravo! 👏 ❤
I really don't think the stoics made the point to encourage missing the point of a bunch of political adversaries. And your youtube comment style is sycophantic. It shows youre weak

Awesome video Ryan. Thank you for speaking up against these terrible people. I hope your message wakes some people up.
Nobody is perfect. Be a student, not a follower
Highly concur, well said.
Completely agree
I wanna try it,brother,
Any advice on what to start with?
100%. I Came to the comments lookin for this.
You can see in the comment section that people who where captured by this twisted minds are furious with this video. I've read a lot of your books, and you always shows good examples. This video is just distancing what a truly stoic should be from bad examples.
totally!!
It's social media that has melted people's brains. READ books. Read anything and decide for yourself what philosophy works for you.

Well said.
I think a lot of us have such a visceral reaction to trump because we strive to follow stoicism, and trump embodies every trait we want to leave behind.
That's why in stoicism, you shouldn't compare yourself. You should only care about your thoughts and your actions since everything else is out of your control. There is no use in getting worked up about things like this.

Honestly Peterson has very good advice that has helped millions of people including myself.
He has helped millions of people. Yet, some of his advice is not practical for the modern era. Example: Religion is as divisive as many other categorical group associations. Ultimately, it cannot be our guiding light out of the cycles we are in.

Seriously. I’m baffled that a brilliant guy such as Ryan wouldn’t bother to actually hear what Jordan Peterson has to say and jump to conclusions like “for shits and giggles, because he likes the attention, because he’s a bigot?”
This tells me that even brilliant people, such as he and Jordan, have irrational blind spots, and you can’t blindly follow anyone.
In fact, he has completely lost me here...
I gotta defend Jordan here.
Him choosing not to subscribe to language that is apart of an ideology he doesn’t agree with is one of the more stoic things a modern man can do.
“Let them call you mad and a fool, one day they will call you wise”
Almost 10years ago Jordan Peterson would discuss the dangers of pronouns evolving in society and the consequences that everyone would have as part of this.
The way he also stated, "I think" at the beginning of his critic of Peterson shows how ignorant he is of the man's work.
🎯🎯🎯
Absolutely spot on. It probably went right over his head since he doens't really know who Jordan Peterson is and what he stands for.
You must remember that this man is WAY smarter than the average person and has more integrity than most people alive.

@@jeromepowell8594 Isn't the point of stoicism to do what you believe is right despite what they will say. As in, despite people calling it an "ego flex"?
Reading through these comments something occurred to me. I don’t think people realize how programmed they have become. Deprogramming is a big part of the Stoic journey and knowing thyself. There are also classical and modern perspectives on stoicism. The nonstop social stream has really brought so much noise and confusion and terrible advice. Content creators create content for you to consume and for them to make money from mostly. Really look into why they are saying what they are saying. What are they doing and why? Discernment takes time to develop. Anything of value takes hard work to attain. Don’t take the low hanging fruit. Climb the tree maybe.
I wish I discovered this channel sooner. 😔 But am glad I've discovered it now.
Any man who talks as if he has no ego is indeed speaking from his ego.

Can’t believe I wasn’t subbed to this guy! Great content, good role model, hopefully the youth can gravitate towards this man
When you talk about stoic virtues like empathy, it’s also important to talk about the fact that there are many, many bad actors in the world.
Good comment. Ryan seems like a smart guy, shame he doesn’t see it this way.
