- Copenhill, the sports facility featuring a Neveplast ski slope located on the roof of the new waste-to-energy plant in the heart of Copenaghen, officially opened to the public on October 4th . Special guest and Italian star Kristian Ghedina, from Cortina d’Ampezzo, attended the inauguration to ‘test’ the ski slope. The ski facility consists of three slopes of different difficulty levels, two conveyor belts, and a ski lift which provide an opportunity to enjoy skiing and snowboarding 365 days a year.
Want something that resembles snow as much as possible.
Colors it green.
But it's unique that way
I think that was deliberate to draw more attention to it by being green. Obviously these people testing it, are expert skiers, I seriously doubt someone who never skied before, can learn good enough on this artificial snow slope, to then be able to smoothly transition to skiing on real snow. There are many types of snow (powder, wet snow), ice and other factors when skiing on real snow slopes. It reminds me of learning how to hit a golf ball on a driving range. I thought I was pretty good because I could hit the golf ball well at the range. But then out of the golf course I was terrible, it was a differrent experience with uneven terrain, hitting out of the rough, etc.
@@d3v-x64 "Unique" ... It's the same material they use everywhere. I saw it 10 years ago at a practice ski jumping hill.
It's probably easier to see the contours on it in flat light through a set of goggles with it being green rather than white.
@@jansa940 it helps, you learn the movements of skiing. Snow is a lot more slippery, so a beginner ski slope is a lot less steep and will have a different feel, but it still helps. Learning on artificial snow will reduce hours or days of flailing around as a beginner.
Bundle up. That shit hurts like hell when you fall
I was wondering why people were bundling up because it's not snow, but now I'm enlightened
@@mashuu_ Probably cold as well
It's not like hard packed snow is easy on your behind or elbows when you crash. That said the problem with this surface is that the heat kind of damages your skis, or it used to be so. Many resorts, and they have them in America too (Buck Hill, Minnesota), have an irrigation system that cools off your equipment and have installed chairlifts instead of using rope tow.
When the snow slope is iced it also gonna hurt when you fall but still people ski on that, and let's not talk about skating on ice or concrete.
soccer players can relate
is it just me or does jesper tjader show up to everything skiing
Wouldn't you also if you had his abilities and passion for the sport? Who wouldn't want to travel the world all expenses paid, while getting paid, to do what they love the most in life.

Why does a powerplant have a better park setup than my local resort 😭😭😭
Because its in denmark
At least you have a public resort. Imagine living in a country without any mountains.

Yet, Finland gets snow.
@@alvintillebeck9384 This is such a dumb comment tbh. It was designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), an architectural firm. As always, with big projects like this, a final product is a combination of involvements from city/town planners, urban designers, architects, urbanists, engineers, as well as building firms. There is a lot of contractors in place. Negotiations, often lead and facilitated by a planning firm, also involve local government and/or city planning department members. The final product is a fruit of work of all those parties and to act like architects don't play a role in it is at least ignorant.
Because it doesn't have to be built on a fucking mountain but one of the flattest countries on the planet with plenty of space because 12 people live there?

I skied Neveplast at Buck Hill in Minnesota. Amazingly fast way to ruin skis. Mine lasted 2.5 runs before they melted. Yes - it HURTS when you fall. You need to stay on edge to hope to have any semblance of control as well. It was interesting...once.
Exactly the possible issues I was wondering about - running skis and not great when you fall. Plus the super short and boring runs. Thanks for confirming the problems with your first hand experience.
Yep, you need to change the gears if you want to have some safety there - like street skate knee pads, elbow pads, gloves with wrist protection… this kind of stuff meant to fall over concrete.
Imagine the microplastic particles your edges are shaving off the fibers every time you turn.
@@archstanton_live that was my thought, too. microplastics that run off in the rain, end up in waterways, and harm wildlife already happens with car tires, but i've heard these kinds of "turf" products are even worse
I bet it feels good to breathe all that fresh mountain air :) Oh I mean powerplant air
The steam coming out of those stacks is actually cleaner than the air around it

Used to ski on these dry ski slopes as a kid in Telford, UK. Great way to break your thumbs or at least heavily bruise them when you fell because they got lodged in the gap in the bristle pattern.
Love that there are tele skiers everywhere!
I wonder how durable that stuff is, and how often it has to be replaced. Seems like a great idea for use in cities all over the world. I would love to see this in Houston.
My back yard be great
it ruins the skis
I think this will be the future of the skiing and snowboarding. Thats sad but the truth
I’ve been curious about this ever since I saw it on abstract. Kinda sad though to see the chimney isn’t puffing rings of steam as initially planned..
Looks like a ski hill from a dystopian world without snow
This stuff must either need frequent repairs or do a total number on your gear.
It needs resurfacing every year depending on how much it gets used obviously. But they lubricate the slope with silicon so it doesn't have that much friction. The ski's get very warm and the wax will melt away, but with wax you have to much friction anyways. Though they don't wear much from it, you only need to apply wax if you want to ski on snow again.
Both of course thousands of ski and snowboards run over it wears it out... Artificial slopes, have to be relayed regularly
if you use it a lot, DON'T use your best snow skis....
They should use special skis or special wax or something to not wear down skis.
this is why europe is amazing
The air is great up there near the smoke stacks, breathe it in!
It's probably just water vapor
Very cool idea and sweet design... that said I feel like the imitation snow would leave scars lol
Super fucking cool! Want them all over the US
As the Beach boys sung, "if everybody had an Ocean, across the USA"... You might not have an Ocean, however you can have a Ski Slope....
Excited that Neveplast's director ski's Tele. Represent!
I know right! You don’t see to many of us
I'm so goddamn intrigued, I have big doubts it feels that close to snow but nevertheless I absolutely want to try that out.
Idk what there is to doubt, but I mean it's not gonna be exactly like snow for obvious reasons. You're not gonna have those small bumps and grooves that form from snow being pushed around as skiers and snowboarders turn, so chances are it's gonna feel smoother. There might be a slight difference in friction between a board's base and the material they use, but overall, it looks really great and potentially promising
@@brazilianambassadordale8223 for sure, I just had big doubts about how they presented it in video (saying it was really close to snow which I don't really believe it is), but hey, looks very cool regardless.

The most shocking thing out about the video is to find out that Denmark won 0 medals at the Sochi Olympics. I always thought of the winter Olympics as the revenge of the Scandinavians. Heck it shares a border with Norway.
A completely flat country with entirely coastal climate to the south of Norway? The Danes are notoriously bad skiers in Scandinavia, except some that spend every vacation in the alps:)
Denmark doesn't share a border with Norway. Its only land border is with Germany, and the southern tip of Sweden is just over a quite long bridge.
@@erringman
The border between the Danish and Norwegian EEZ runs along the Skagerrak, between Faroer and Norway in the North Sea and between Greenland and Norwegian Svalbard in the Arctic.
@@mgh62000 You are knowledgable about Scandinavia so that's all good. For those who don't know, the Skagerrak is a body of water, so DK and Norway share a maritime boundary and not a land border. It's a common misconception that Denmark is 'up there' with the other Nordic countries, while it is actually not geographically adjacent, it is down south next to Germany, and flat and muddy rather than mountainous or forested or fjorded or snowy, so it's that common misconception that I sought to correct. Saying they share a border is like saying China shares a border with Japan, France with the UK, or Australia with NZ - if you are comfortable with those ideas, then more power to you.
Crazy Danes ...They’re the BEST!
Here's the difference when you fall on snow vs this stuff; after falling on the snow you get up and laugh, after falling on that shit you wait 'till emergency services comes to get you.
I would build a cover with solar panels over this and then use real snow.
Climate change is shortening the ski season, I'm happy to see that plastic will be a solution to that!
The fact that they all still wear goggles lol.
The air/wind can make it uncomfortable and hard to see at high speeds.
Nothing odd in that
they're on a tall building in the middle of the city, you need goggles to prevent sunburn if nothing else

It has been described by the factory’s managing director, Jacob Simonsen, as an example of “hedonistic sustainability”.At the opening ceremony of the slope, he said: “As a power plant, CopenHill is so clean that we have been able to turn its building mass into the bedrock of the social life of the city. Its façade is climbable, its roof is hikeable, and its slopes are skiable.”
