One year on a beaver pond in northern Minnesota

  • This video is a compilation of the wildlife that crossed a beaver dam just south of Voyageurs National Park from March 2019-April 2020.
This video was literally a year in the making! Beaver dams can be wildlife highways in boreal environments like the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem, allowing all sorts of wildlife to easily cross wetland habitats which might be otherwise difficult to get across.
While the wildlife is undoubtedly neat, we particularly enjoyed watching the changing of the seasons on this beaver dam! It summarizes life in the Northwoods: cold snowy winters and hot, humid summers with lots of vegetation!
We are curious to hear what everyone enjoyed about the video!

Yeah it is a fantastic state, I’m so lucky to live here. You see, a long time ago when settlers first came to the US, they pushed the predators and big animals up north, well everywhere except in Minnesota. Minnesota’s northern wilderness is vastly untouched, and we passed conservation laws really early on, so we still have a lot of fantastic wildlife in the upper half of the state, and with modern techniques, the animals are spreading further and further south!

Mel D, lol, small world. Nope, Where 9 mile creek flows into Bloomington from Edina. There were a series of beaver dams that over time formed a couple of permanent ponds in the footage and one that was huge but disappeared when one dam was destroyed by the DNR. This was in the late 70's before Lake Normandale was created. By the early 90s the creek had been partially rerouted to build the current SS Building. There's still 25 lbs Northerns in there. Be well!
