    The description of the battle of gondolin is in my option one of the best pieces of writings Tolkien ever did, and one of the most beautiful pieces of literature I have ever read

      I know, right? The earlier version in the Book of Lost Tales II was incredible. It is too bad that it was so heavily edited and changed for The Silmarillion! BOLT II was far superior.

    As much as I admire Imladris and its beauty, it's Gondolin that's always been my favorite Elfin kingdom in Middle-Earth.

    While watching this I kept imagining gondolin as a playable faction in DaC. Would be so unique with all these houses. Sad that it didn't exist during the third age.

      It would've been interesting to see how Beleriand fared during the WOTR, if it had survived beyond the First Age. Imagine how prominent characters could've visited the ancient kingdoms there in the course of the story.

    • @majorianus8055
      @majorianus8055 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Riley Williams Gilgalad and his kingdom is probably only as strong as Nargothrond, whereas during the Beleriand there are so many elven realsm they are I think probably 6 times stronger during the first age than the second. Mordor would’ve been devastated quickly.

    "And high and noble as was Elemmakil, greater and more lordly was Ecthelion, Lord of the Fountains, at that time Warden of the Great Gate. All in silver was he clad, and upon his shining helm there was set a spike of steel pointed with a diamond; and as his esquire took his shield it shimmered as if it were bedewed with drops of rain, that were indeed a thousand studs of crystal."

    "Let's assume Earendil chose to be counted among the Elves"
    We know he did. There's a passage in the Silmarillion where he asks Elwing to choose and then he chooses the same:
    _Then Eärendil said to Elwing: 'Choose thou, for now I am weary of the
    world.' And Elwing chose to be judged among the Firstborn Children of Ilúvatar,
    because of Lúthien; and for her sake Eärendil chose alike, though
    his heart was rather with the kindred of Men and the people of his father_

    • @jamiecampbell8855
      @jamiecampbell8855 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Describing Tuor being promoted because he becomes an elf is probably not the best way to describe it. Elves and men are both the children of illuvatar granted different gifts therefore I would say he chose to be sundered from men.

    Sumbitch...just listening to this is making me fidget in my seat like a little kid getting an adventure story read to him before bed time. I HAVE to get my hands on BOLT II again. This story is a literal page turner. Probably one of Tolkien's best writing for battle scenes!!

You’re doing a great thing here buddy, keep at it!!

  • @Lightice1
    @Lightice1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Just a small correction: only the Noldor (or Noldoli) are called Gnomes in the earlier drafts, not all elves in general. Tolkien at this time thought, or at least thought that it would make a good story that the word "gnome" had root in the Greek "gnosis", or wisdom. It's still referenced in the published version of the Silmarillion, where the first humans to encounter a Noldo dub them as the Nôm, or the Wise.

    These are fantastic, thank you for making these. Just discovered the channel and have been cruising through them. Disappointed they don't come out as often but it seems like a hobby for you since I have yet to be hit with mid video ads and I'm appreciative of the time and effort you put into them, and I'd rather you keep doing them at a pace that's comfortable for you so you don't get burnt out. I should probably slow down watching them as I'm already about halfway through and just found it last week.

    Thank you so much for the upload! I want to know if you will speak about Lindon under Gil-galad or Greenwood with Oropher? Those two are so interesting but I don't know if Tolkien really focused on these elves much at all. Also, I like how you have the dramatic music in the back here and there. It adds to the already great video.

    Minor error, it's said that Ecthelion & his house slew more orcs than ever in all battles, not Ecthelion alone. (even though that would be badass, if not just a little op. Also a year has passed but I haven't seen anyone comment on this)
    And as always, I love this video and part one! Your Middle-earth lore series is amazing, and definitely my favorite.

    Second, thanks for all the effort on these, they were insanely helpful.
    Just one suggestion: Reverse the order of the playlist and add new videos to the end, OR make a second playlist that is ordered that way. It gets annoying manually selecting the previous video on the list after finishing one.

    Love your lore videos as well. Honestly the best! I'm sure these must be exhausting but you do the fans a great service. As a side note if you like looking into lore and such; I'm note sure if its new lore being made, however, the new video game Shadow of War had some new interesting pieces of lore. Not sure if you would take it as cannon. Essentially some pieces that explain what the eye is, and how Isilidur didn't become a wraith. I didn't play the games but I did watch the parts that explained the story on youtube. Also amazon doing a Lord of the Rings show which is a prequel to the films. If your interested in that stuff.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Shadow of War game is not cannon and it actually rewrites much of Tolkien's lore for its own purposes.

    This may have been noted elsewhere, but Tuor becoming of "Elven-kind" is a balance to Luthien sharing in the "gift of Illuvatar" because of her love of Beren - much as there is a balance in the sons of Earendil - one choosing to be of Men and the other of Elves. Perhaps there is a harmony within the Music that must be maintained even amongst the vagaries of Middle Earth.

  • @gregorymacdonnell7914
    @gregorymacdonnell7914 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    + Arachir Galudirithon It was my hope/belief that Tuor had become so much entwined with the fate of the Noldor ,and of Gondolin,that Mandos had indeed granted him ,what I believe Tuor himself would ,in his heart want,Aplace amongst the Elves in the end. It is as a side note,interesting reading early Tolkien,as he refers to the Noldor as gnomes!! How he grew and re-grew his world and tales is so very interesting .

    It is the first time I ear Tuor could be counted as an elf and end in Valar.
    But there is a symmetry between Tuor being counted as an elf and Luthien being counted as a mortal.
    Mandos and Manwe could not change the Fate of Men and Elves, but they could have exchanged the immortality of Luthien with the mortality of Tuor.
    In this way, Luthien could have shared the destiny of her mortal husband forever, where Tuor could have shared the destiny of his wife forever.
    And there are even more deep ties between the two stories, as Huor sacrifices his life to save Gondolin forces and his line mix with the elves and last forever.

    I like to think that there were 7 epic balrogs like gothmog and durins bane and that there is like 200 or 300 lesser balrogs, these being the types that died in gondolin. We know that Maia have a hierarchy and gothmog being the lord of balrogs is already indicitive of that, plus sauron is a higher maia than others like the istari.

      Beleriand is glued to the western coast of Eriador. Ossiriand and the Blue mountains are the only parts that don't sink into the sea, and become Lindon and Ered Luin

    for the balrog part I think Tolkien was of the mind that as they grew with age they became more powerful, this has also been seen with dragons. Hence one of the last in Moria was extremely large and powerful, probable the most powerful in their order.

      I like to think they were always as big as they were and that the elves were simply unimaginably skilled and powerful

      The Balrogs were maiar that followed Melkor in the early days so aging should not be an issue.

      In the earlier drafts of both the Silmarillion and the Lord of the Rings, the Balrogs were flesh and blood monsters with fiery manes and iron fangs. Then Tolkien started to modify the Balrog in the LotR into more like an evil spirit that surpasses its physical form, and subsequently retcons the entire nature of Balrogs in the whole continuity into actually being fallen Maiar.

    Iron snakes definitely sound more like trains, trains were very important for moving troops around in ww1 as motorization was in it's infancy.

    Great Video and lots of new News for me, just one thing about the Balrogs I think you mentioned wrong, I believe in the Silmarillion there was written that the Balrogs were Fire Wraths that came to Arda like Ungoliant and not that they were fallen Maiar, Maybe I am wrong ...

    Super enjoy all your videos. Question: When does all of Beleriand sink and why????

    • @tjesse66
      @tjesse66 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      not long after Tuor and Idril sail west Morgoth overruns Beleriand. The Earendil sails west to find Valinor and petition the Valar to come to the aid of Middle Earth. The Valar take pity and decide to intervene and the War of Wrath ensues in which the Valar go and fight Morgoth. That war is so terrible and the forces unleashed so great that it caused Beleriand to fall into the sea.

      It sinks when Ancalagon the Black, an unbelievably huge dragon, falls on top of three volcanic mountains (not sure how to spell the name) and they lead to the sinking
