      I'd love to see him react to Fever Ray. That's a straight-up masterpiece right there. Best music Karen ever put out. I actually preordered that album on a whim based on all the hype surrounding it and was immediately awestruck. Ever since it's been one of my alltime favorites. I used to own a t-shirt with the album cover on it and I never once came across anyone who knew what it was. Such a shame.

Amnesiac is the slightly darker, weirder more cinematic version of Kid A, that is a must listen as well. If you want live stuff, definitely check out In Rainbows From The Basement (the extender/longer version), it's recorded wonderfully and show the band off at their peak IMO.

    I saw Radiohead back in July like 3rd row at the United Center with a couple friends who are much bigger fans than I am (and I love Radiohead). I waited the whole show for them to play There There as it's my favorite song by them and finally they brought out those drums and I knew they were gonna play it. It was the last song of the last encore and I was soooo hyped! No better way to end that show which btw was fucking awesome.

  • @captgeech
    @captgeech 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Radiohead also thought something more could have been done with "I Will" so they figured out how to play it backwards, and turned it into a song called "Like Spinning Plates" on Amnesiac. Even the vocal line has an effect that makes it sound like he's singing backwards. But then there's a live piano version that is beautiful as well.

    Wolf at the Door has always been one of my favourite Radiohead songs. It has its strengths in beauty and anger at the same time. It's also a bit sad, and the humming part reminds me of Street Spirit's slavonic part before the ending. There's no surprises in the song's arrangements and they decided to keep it simple with a dark pinch of black. Great song and pretty good album I think.

    As soon as the airy ambient guitar starts in There There, it turns into a 1000/10 song. And the lyrics “We are accidents waiting, waiting to happen” couldn’t be more true. We are destroying society, the emvironment, and everything we ever had, and I feel like Thom’s lyrics go over that topic a lot. I might be wrong(pun totally intended) on that, but that’s how it feels to me.
    Edit: A Punch Up at a Wedding is my favorite on the album because it’s more of a jam song where it’s drawn out so long because the band was just jamming, and I find it so groovy that I would definitely listen to it for 5 minutes. Also, A Wolf at the Door is a very depressing song, and it seems to depict hopelessness and surrendering to the offender, giving everything you ever loved to them.

      Tbh, the only filler song in this album imo is “go to sleep”.
      The only flaw “The Gloaming” has is not being the opener, since I feel like it sounds like an opener. It perfectly encompasses the feeling of urgency to be displayed throughout the album. 2+2=5 is already a fantastic opener, but I feel like it’d still hold up in any other spot in the album
      And Backdrifts is just flat out amazing for me...one of their best songs imo.

    This whole album is criminally underrated and I don't know why. All I've heard is that it's "inconsistent" but like what? All the songs have a dirty rock sound with a lot of creepy piano and synths, and none of the songs are outliers in quality in my opinion. I think people just see it's between Kid A and In Rainbows and assume it must be one of the "bad" Radiohead albums. Very sad.

    I've been really enjoying these first listen's of the band. Hoping you do AMSP next but there is no wrong. With how often you mention layering and mixing I feel like you may actually like The King of Limbs which is universally the most controversial album by them. I also think the album version is better than the In The Basement version but most people think the live version is more accessible, I just think it loses some of the character/concept. Excited to see which you go to next.
    As far as other bands go, I think it'd be cool to see you do a first listen to albums like Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear or All Hour Cymbals by Yeasayer.

    About "The Gloaming": since Kid A, Radiohead has been influenced by experimental electronic musicians, such as IDM (Intelligent Dance Music, not to be confused with EDM) artists like Aphex Twin, Autechre and Boards of Canada. These artists were all making music like "Everything in Its Right Place", "Kid A" and "The Gloaming" since the 1990s. Also, there's a whole subgenre called glitch music, which Oval basically invented it in the 90s. Their album 94Diskont is one of the trippiest albums ever.

    • @krautgazer
      @krautgazer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, "There, There" and "Optimistic" were influenced by 70s krautrock band Can, who made a lot of songs using tribal drums (their drummer is one of the best drummers I know of, he was called a "human metronome") and groovy interplaying guitar and bass, usually with an atmospheric keyboard in the background (or even foreground at times). Very peculiar sound (Ege Bamyasi is their best album, followed by Tago Mago and Future Days). Anyway, I'm just pointing out some of Radiohead references. Radiohead actually covered one of Can's songs in at least one live show. This song they covered is called "Thief".

    There is actually a story behind I Will related to a song on Amnesiac called "Like Spinning Plates". Here is a little bit about it:
    "Like Spinning Plates" was born out of frustration over an electronic version of "I Will" from the Kid A sessions… Not knowing what to do with [the "dodgy Kraftwerk version"], someone had the idea to reverse it and played it backwards… The reversed backing with its eerie pulse was apparently way more exciting than the ill-fated forward recording, and Thom was also hearing a melody in parts of his reversed vocal of "I Will", which inspired him to write something he could sing over this recording. He went to his notebooks, pieced a set of lyrics together (perhaps using the "cut up lines pulled out of a top hat" method again), thereby creating a new song, "Like Spinning Plates".
    Edit: Here is in example th-cam.com/video/ME_W1uKfhJI/w-d-xo.html
