  • Ex-Zodiac Review and Early Access Feedback || Is It The New Star Fox? The story of the rail shooter genre has been tragic. Despite having some major early successes like Star Fox 64 and Sin and Punishment, the genre has basically faded away since the PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox era. Most rail shooters we see today are made through the lens of nostalgia or just as a fun novelty. I have been very much looking forward to seeing what Ex-Zodiac (an indie take on the Star Fox series) has to offer. Is it a bold new step forward for the genre? Is it a sign that we might see a renewed interest in this heavily looked over genre? Or is it another throw-back style game that's more geared toward imitation rather than innovation? In today's video I dig into my thoughts on Ex-Zodiac and since the game is in early access, also provide my feedback on the game and some ideas on how it could be improved. This will be a really interesting case because I rarely have the opportunity to comment on a game while it's still being developed. Fans of Star Fox SNES, Star Fox 64, Star Fox Zero, Sin and Pushment, Sin and Punishment 2, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and REZ are definitely going to be interested in seeing what this game brings to the table. Currently it is on Steam, but I would not be surprised to see the final version also appearing on Nintendo Switch, PS5/PS4 and the Xbox series.

If you ever do play it skip the recent emulated version as it’s got some issues. Better to just emulate the mega drive original. Sunsoft made some great games back then. It really plays very much like a Cotton game where they tried to incorporate most of the mechanics of the side scrolling games into it. I haven't played it myself, but wrt the density of stages and using boost, one way to go about it might be to have a stage time bonus that encourages the use of boosts and adjust the balance (in terms of score bonus, enemy density, and boost recovery) so that you are forced to choose between going faster or destroying all enemies.
    nice video!

    Brief Airforce nerd moment here just to clear things up, the barrel roll looks like you're swirling around while going forward like the shape of a corkscrew, while the aileron roll is what Peppy calls the "Barrel Roll". There's a whole bunch of fancy aircraft terms for evasive and show off maneuvers and they can be a pain to remember them all (I'm looking at you cobra maneuver. Do it, I dare you, make yourself an easier target in that Su-57 for my autocannon to shred you like a potato chip you flying Dorito!)

    I love third person rail shooters. They’re one of my favourite genres. This game looks like it seems content at being safe. If you’re going to take Star Fox’s identity at least evolve it as you said otherwise do something completely different. Star Fox, Sin and Punishment and Panzer Dragoon are all in the same genre but feel distinct from another. It’s giving me Metroid Dread and Blazing Chrome flashbacks. Good games but also unsatisfying because they feel too safe.

    The remark that it's ok/good for these types of shooters to have more enemies than players can kill to create complexity/routing options is a good observation. Though I think using enemies as such for that is non-ideal. A lot of games (including S&P and SF) have tons of destructible scenery elements/secrets which have the same effect but without the slight feeling disappointment that comes from letting enemies escape your wrath. Light gun shooters also have headshot/limb hit bonuses and what not. It's definitely an important aspect of gameplay since it creates routing, variety between runs & sometimes on the fly decision making.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's def an important balancing act. If you have too much enemy overflow then it just becomes frustrating and chaotic, but if you don't have enough now your game is limited and it's depth is shallow (like star fox snes). I think Sin and Punishment does a great job at having just enough enemies to keep you grasping but not so many that it's overwhelming and a complete mess ha.

  • @jakoski

    Ex-Zodiac actually does have its own scoring system with kill chains. Kill enemies as fast as you can, don't let the chain drop. Not as in-depth as 64, but it is unique from Star Fox.

    • @jakoski
      @jakoski ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually that does also lend into the game's level design as well and what really separates it from Star Fox. With Star Fox, you're encouraged to slow down in some densely packed areas and get everything you can while you're there. Whereas Ex-Zodiac's kill chain scoring system encourages you to go as fast as possible to not let the chain drop. The areas by extension can be more sparse because you're not spending as much time there.

    I really like the presentation of this game; it does a great job at emulating the aesthetics and gamefeel of SF1 but smoothing out all the rough edges.
    That said, I totally agree with your criticisms re 1) power-up removal, 2) enemy sparseness and 3) the weird jolting-stop effect when you get hit in the Space Harrier stages.
    I also noticed two things that I don't think came up in your discussion. First is that I had a number of times where I felt like depth perception was an issue where it shouldn't have been; a number of times in boss fights a bullet that I thought had passed me swung back around from off-screen and hit me. I don't remember ever having that issue with SF64; when a bullet was off-screen, it was basically gone. Second, I noticed some popcorn enemies - particular on the bike stage - took multiple lock-on missiles to kill. It's pretty unsatisfying as a player to have that happen with weak enemies, and it feels like having more enemies with fewer HP would be more satisfying.
    P.S. Did you ever try out Xenocider, the indie-developed "Sin & Punishment"-like that came out for Dreamcast last year? I personally had mixed feelings after buying a physical copy, but it comes out on Steam in a month or so if you wanted to try it them you'll able to get it for a much more reasonable price.

    I put a lot of thought into Star Fox 64's charge shot and all range mode after my initial dabble with Ex-Zodiac as well. I came to the personal conclusion that these elements are part of SF64's identity as opposed to rail shooters in general, and I think Ex-Zodiac shouldn't go too far into being a SF clone. That said, I don't think it's doing enough of its own thing either. Like you said, it's playing it safe. Some more scoring depth or similar nuance would be nice, if nothing else.
    The lock-on in particular just did not win me. I love SF64's lock-on for its scoring game. I love Panzer Dragoon and Rez's lock-ons for their flashiness, destruction and adaptability. I love Sin & Punishment's lock-on for its accessibility factor and that feeling of being a snappy quick-draw badass. The Ex-Zodiac lock-on felt a little bit superfluous to me. It seems it was trying to be a PD/Rez lock-on, but it didn't quite hit that mark for me. I was locking on to things and then thinking "man, I coulda just shot those". As I played more, I could tell there were places it was the better option, but it ultimately lacked that potent sense of fantasy, power and purpose I was looking for.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I didn't mention it in the review but if you turbo fire with an upgrade lock on seems like a waste of time. Been looking forward to this game, big fan of SF64. Apparently the Dev is planning branching paths. For a solo Dev the quality is definitely there, but I do agree about the powerups and specifically not carrying them over between stages- In SF SNES/64 that was a subtle reward for not losing your wings or dying. On the other hand, I can understand the balancing reason for starting each stage fresh, less to factor into the difficulty.
    The scoring seems to definitely encourage shooting everything since you're specifically graded on it, so not sure if more enemies would hinder that. I find the bombs fairly useless since there are so few enemies, there's never enough of a crowd for its function as crowd control!

    Rail shooters seem to be an incredibly rare genre in general. Some were made in the early arcade 3d era, when developers were trying to figure out how to make 3d games using mostly 2d assets. So you have Space Harrier, that Star Wars arcade game and all the light gun games. Then there were a few on the early 3d consoles, like ps1, saturn and n64. I think ps1 had some tube runner game, and another called omega force or something like that. N64 had sin and punishment as well as star fox 64. PS2 era, there were more light gun games, as well as REZ. OG Xbox got Panzer Dragoon Orta. And... That's pretty much were things seem to have ended. Star Fox was kept alive for a few more games and then died.
    That said, there are arcade space and air combat games which are similar to rail shooters but not quite the same. They play more like how Star Fox 64 does in All-Range Mode. You're placed in a large arena densely-packed with enemies and essentially told to kill them all. Ace Combat 4, Rogue Squadron, Robotech for gamecube... You can unlock more ships and weapons in these games, but you can't really upgrade anything. There are no rpg elements that I'm aware of, so they're pretty arcade-like in design. Not really designed for single-segment play but they are similar to rail shooters in some respects.

    That game does look beautiful. I really like the ideas, but I'm sure you are correct in your criticisms as well. They may have decided to go with the Snes angle for the same reason that I'm just learning there even was a Starfox 64. Popularity. I did I think, know Starfox64 existed as I owned a N64 and two game boy colors briefly in my late twenties/early 30s because my neighbor played pokemon stadium with his son every other weekend and since he was our dealer we played it with him the other weekends and helped him get good to play his son when he was all straightened up for parent duty. It was pretty fun. I hadn't played any new games since around the time doom came out and everything started going 3d which was when I checked out of video games for about a decade. I was an arcade bike riding outdoors kinda street player not any part of the "gamer" thing that came later. I eventually got into Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout New Vegas modding, but that's the only games I play that are modern outside of mecha sims and shooters. To me shooters *are* the video games. The first games I ever played where Space Invaders, Astroids, Defender, Centipede, Galaxian, Galaga, Pacman and Battlezone in that order. The evolution of video games, for me, follows that path from Galaga to Xevious and onward and everything else is just fun side games to waste some time in the interim. Once you have a game like Skyrim (heavily modded) half the other things games were trying to accomplish are obsolete. What's left are shooters and basic challenge games. The sport of the thing. The gem in the crown is the vertical shooter and that is something history will bear me out on.
    I really like this channel and the story you told about Raiden and playing beat me ups because it stretched the quarters longer and putting your last two quarters in Outrun to play you out...I did that during that same time as, even though I got a Nintendo eventually the lure of the real games would still get me on my bike even if only to go to a local gas station, bowling alley, or grocery store front walkway to play arcade cabinets. As the downtown pool halls sold off the stock they bought from the original mall and theater arcades like Aladdin's Castle those same machines filtered into bars, flea markets, and small impromptu mini arcades out in the county on the highways where the strip clubs and pawn shops are. My terf as a kid/early teen. Of course distributors put them all over the place too and I learned about Sanwa joysticks and cheery switches and 8 way restrictor gates and all kinds of things like that way back in the 80s and very early 90s from talking to the operators who I was always bugging about the machines. I knew when the tech guy came to work on a line of machines and would go and bother them with suggestions, requests, and questions. Didn't really think about how I'd have been able to find out on the Internet by the time I got the money to get any of those things, even though we all knew these things would soon be a reality.

    Per the Steam board, the dev mentioned July 26th (one day after this video was uploaded) that branching paths and different modes are planned. Perhaps there'll be a score attack mode offering additional ways to earn points (chaining enemies would definitely be nice). The game has been in development since 2017 and became a sure thing when it's Kickstarter more than doubled it's funding goal in 2020 (20,000 British pound goal, raised 50,000 pounds). So I think the game will stay in Early Access probably until late 2023/early 2024, particularly since the dev team is so small, so I think by the time the game gets it's full commercial release that it'll have substantial transformations along with probably several more stages, using Early Access funds to continue making the game bigger and presumably better. Kickstarter continues to be crucial for indie game development despite garbage like Mighty No. 9 and scams like Elysian Shadows and Zoe Quinn's Kickstarted in the Butt giving the platform such a negative and toxic reputation.

    This game looks pretty rad, like Star Fox mixed with Space Harrier! I always liked SF64 better than SF SNES because it felt more polished, with not nearly as much slowdown. However, a game that's a more polished version of SF SNES would be perfectly fine with me, too. Totally disagree with the vid creator about SF Assault, though. I loved that game, personally. Thought it was more playable than SF SNES for sure.

    I would've liked an ever slightly more complex art style. I get it that it's a cheap style to make but just sightly more would've made it look a littler better. The ship looks way too simple imo. Hopefully the dev can work on higher res models. The city bike levels look more detailed than the ship levels. Gameplay matters most and that looks great will be getting this.

  • @ghoulsarefree
    @ghoulsarefree ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Re:one of the final comments about pausing when you get hit, this idea comes from Space Harrier so I would hope the dev does not abandon it in their homage. Since the game doesn't have HP it makes sense to give the screen a moment to clear before forcing the player back in.
    Personally I think Star Fox 64 is one of the weakest major rail-shooters as it is far too slow and the idea of a brake and charge which is used over and over is just not interesting to me. The alternate vehicles do not hold up too well although the all-range boss fights are great (and this is why I like Star Fox Command). I loved it as a kid but when I go back to get better at the genre it's usually Panzer Dragoon Orta or Star Successor that I play as SF64 seems to get less and less fun every time I return to it.
    Comparing 64 to Star Fox 1 is tough because as you say the 15 fps limit is just such a restriction on how that game plays that its level design is not able to shine. I think in lieu of Nintendo making a 60fps 'remaster' of original Star Fox (which we can all hold our breath for) it is great to see an indie dev "completing" the game even if it can't be a literal remake (if it was a Sega franchise they'd have bought it by now). With the Rayforce type combination of auto-shot and multi-lock ironically the mechanics look most similar to Yar's Revenge and Panzer Dragoon so I don't think it's right to say that they have only gone back to the beginning of the genre.
    Unfortunately I think it will be very hard for a rail-shmup to ever top Star Successor because the IR pointer is such a great technology which has been wholesale abandoned and would only ever make a comeback in a VR format. So I look at new ones with some skepticism and I think we all have to admit this genre is an artifact of the 3D transition and the technical difficulty of implementing a 3D camera system, which in modern gaming is considered so fundamental.
