  • In this video, I talk about why artists should try working with white charcoal on black paper...or you could use another medium to achieve the same style and learning how to create different values and lighting within your work.
    In this style of work, you focus exclusively on the highlights and let the black paper do part of the work for you. The more extreme the lighting is, the more interesting this style will look. Black subjects really come into their own here but any colour subject can work as shown in this video with two border terriers which came out lovely in this technique..
    I use general's charcoal pencils and the paper is Clairefontaine paint on Noir.

    Thanks for sharing your wisdom around free art. I am an aspiring artist and I am amazed at what people want to pay, or not pay for work I’ve spent hours doing. One thing you mentioned was the pool of potential buyers you tend to attract, all more people who want the work for a pittance or for nothing. Thanks again

      Yes it is a thing unfortunately. Everyone wants everything for nothing but they themselves want paying well for their efforts.

    Very nice! I am trying to do this technique on a chipmunk being hand fed a peanut in its shell. It is quite a challenge. I like the techniques of using the brush. I will give it a try. Cheers

    I see you kinda start with a bit of detail, then blend it out. Does that help avoid flooding the paper grain?

    What paper do you use for your charcoal drawings? I always end up filling up the grain before I get to the detail layer. Any tips on how to avoid that ... other than use less pastel? 😂

    I'm such a fan! I noticed you were using a brush for blending as well. Does that give more of a 'bloom' to the blend over using a stump? I've attempted to paint pets (and by NO means am I in your league!), but I always found it quite stressful! As you say, you haven't the time to paint for yourself, plus having to meet expectations and deadlines kills the creative spirit IMO! Enjoy your videos...music and all!

      Hi...yes the brush does give a little more bloom but it is also more gentle and so you can use it to add a little bloom without completely altering the charcoal strokes. Good for giving a soft effect to fur for example....and I used it to get the smokey background on that GSD. I have done commissions since I was at school so I'm sort of accustomed to it in a lot of senses but, yeah...would love to have chance to paint something just for me again. Something to work towards. Glad you like the videos lol.

    How do you make a outline of reference on black paper?

    • @TmHudsonArt
      @TmHudsonArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I draw it out on separate cheap paper and then go over the outline on the backside with white charcoal, lay it on the final piece and go over it on the original side to transfer the charcoal onto the final paper...
