My two favorite sports movies of all time are Rocky 1 and Friday Night Lights. Both times the protagonist(s) lose at the end but they win in every other way. It’s perfect.

STILL brings tears to my eyes. The greatest thing about this flick is that people are all imperfect. And watching them all reacting to getting a chance to rise above is interesting. Paulie was the most complex. I love that guy, though, because he feels like a real person. All of these characters 'could be' people you know. It's such a grounded film that when it triumphs, you soar.
Paulie is amazing because he's a drunk. He can't help himself. He drinks because he's had a tough life....yet he's trying so desperately to rise about that life and help both himself and those around him yet that frustrates him so he hits the bottle even harder. Long story short; Rocky made 225 MILLION DOLLARS at the Box Office and was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning 3 of them (Best editing, best direction, and BEST PICTURE). Sylvester Stallone proved that no matter how low you are in your life, how much your struggling, and even when nobody believes in you, you CAN DO IT. This is Rocky.

"I wish they would show us how Apollo was preparing for the fight." That's just it, a major plot point for this movie was that this was just a publicity stunt for Apollo. He prepared for this fight about as well as Tyson did for Buster Douglas.

I think that was a good philosophy for life, make your goals lofty but attainable for rocky it was Q,Can I beat apollo for the title A, no of course not, he's the best in the world with the belt to prove it Q, can I go the distance with apollo A, ambitious, unprecedented but not impossible.
Stallone didn't shoot any of the hardcore scenes in it. After Rocky was released the people who made the film shot some hardcore footage and re-edited it to make it look like he was in a porno.
The problem for me with them is Sly knew he had to 'out-wow' the audience after the success of this one. And therefore they're a bit heavy on the dramatizing of the characters and storylines. But after the first 3 he really went cuckoo with that.

In 1975, to use in a sales pitch for his new invention, the Steadicam, Garrett Brown filmed his girlfriend running up and down the steps at the Philadelphia Art Museum. When the newly hired director of "Rocky", John Avildsen saw the footage he purchased use of the Steadicam for the movie and asked "where are those steps?". When Avildsen and Stallone saw the steps in person the script was partially rewritten to change the movie's location from New York to Philadelphia and history was made.
Classic, I think 2 is my favorite. Fun fact: The studios Sylvester Stallone pitched this movie to all loved it and wanted to buy the rights, but they wanted a different actor to play Rocky. Sylvester refused, & held onto it since he was adamant he would play the role. The rest is history. Gotta appreciate people believing in their creation to that degree, where even a quick check wasn’t gonna satisfy him. He saw the bigger picture. Great reaction bro!
The Rocky character is one of my all time movie favorites ever. I love how Rocky is so humble, and stays humble through the course of the movies as he gains stardom and legendary status. He doesn't stray too far from that humble and soft spoken person he was in the first film -- yet at the same time he gains with each film, more and more confidence in his talent, his power, and self awareness, and he also keeps that determination to tough through hard times, hard fights. Sylvester Stallone is an absolute champ in continuing Rocky's story over the decades and then branching off into Creed...and allowing Rocky fans to keep cheering him on, even after his fighting days are done. I love that Sly seems to have kept Micky in mind as he developed Rocky to that point in his old age, where he is there for someone else, the same way that old Micky was there for him.

I was at a wedding at the Radnor Hunt club a few years ago and the dude getting married uncle was one of the guys around the bum drum. We were all hammered and he ended up singing for a bunch of us in the bathroom because it had the best acoustics 😂
"Gonna Fly Now" gets all of the fanfare from this movie, and it is a great song/score, but to me the best song is "Going The Distance" at the end of the fight. That is the real hair raiser of them all.
The title fight was choreographed by Stallone himself, so basically every boxing match in a film since then owes a credit to Stallone. The fight was also filmed in reverse, starting with Round 15 and ending with Round 1, as it was easier to put on all the make-up to film the last round and just remove a little bit of it as they went. So by the time they reached Round 1, they had removed all the make-up.
This film will always be the best in the series. The studio wanted to give Stallone $150,000 for the script and wanted other stars such as Burt Reynolds, Ryan O' Neal, and James Caan for the title role. Stallone didn't back down, saying that no one else can play the part but him. The rest is as they say is history.
Burgess Meredith was the biggest star they could get in the movie. A legendary film and TV actor with a fifty year career before he played this part. Talia Shire tells a great story about sitting in a cold, dirty Philadelphia building before the crack of dawn with Meredith who looks over at her with a broad smile and says, "Isn't it wonderful that we get to do this?" Small spoiler for Rocky II - he takes her to the zoo.
@@CapedInformer there were a few lines that he did ad-lib, one particular part was when he was ranting at Mickey he started yelling that the apartment stank and that was because the apartment they were using did actually smell like the inside of an asshole (there was some problem with the toilet).
The whole story behind Stallone writing this is incredible. He went to so many studios with the script and they either rejected it, or the idea of Stallone playing Rocky and he insisted on playing him. He turned down big money and he was completely broke and stuck to his guns. Also, the dog BUTKUS in this film, was Stallone’s real dog. Kept him company while writing the script. Stallone is a true legend and Carl Weathers was genius casting. Hope you enjoy the second film. It’s the first of the franchise that Stallone directed.
And he got an offer for the screenplay but held out for a studio that would actually let him star in it. Legendary. The ultimate underdog story behind the ultimate underdog story. Him trying to peddle this script around Hollywood without any major acting/writing credentials and going for the glory.

fun fact: Stallone based the fight and the character of rocky off boxer chuck wepner. wepner famously challenged alie in 1975. wepner trained like a beast in the catskill mountains for weeks leading up to the fight. he didn't plan to beat ali. he just wanted to go the distance with him. and he almost did. ali outboxed him, opening cuts over both eyes and breaking his nose. but wepner kept fighting. he was beaten by TKO with 19 seconds left in the 15th round.
Sylvester Stallone wrote and (unofficially) co-directed Rocky - he wrote *all* the Rocky movies and solely directed II, III, and IV. The core theme (which a lot of people miss) was Rocky proving his worth as a fighter - he could hardly care less what others thought of him, but he had to prove it to himself. Creed was a powerhouse and few of his fights ever went past the fifth round. He never cared whether he won or lost the fight - he went the full fifteen rounds against Apollo (something no one else had even come close to doing) and *THAT* was his victory.

burgess meredith (mick) is an all-time legendary actor. his later stuff in the "grumpy old men " series in funny, including the outtakes. (especially those, dont miss them.) he was the original penquin in the batman tv series. was on a few of the most classic twilight zone episodes. and he had a 25 year career in film and stage before any of that.
I'm pretty sure Rocky won the Oscar that year for Best Picture. If you watch all of them, the little girl who calls him "Creepo" early on, he meets again way down the road, in Rocky VI (Rocky Balboa)
If you learn the back-story to how Sylvester Stallone got this movie made, it'll bless your soul. The man is inspiring. He wrote this story with not a dime in his pocket at the time. He even had to sell his dog to make ends meet. After the screenplay was finally picked up, he found the stranger he sold his dog to and bought it back from him. Amazing story.

13:55 - They have a complex relationship that you only see part of in this movie. But it's very clear later on in the series that there's a lot of history between them and that Rocky cares a lot about Mickey.
Sylvester Stallone was always a writer first, he started writing when he was a kid as a hobby. He wrote the script in three days. The love story between Rocky and Adrian I've always found to be one of the most touching in cinema. That first kiss is one of the sexiest ones on screen, because it is so moving and paced perfectly and it's between two very ordinary people who become extraordinary together.
The thing is, I love how his scripts was so rich in character development over the movie series. I especially loved the long pay off in "Rocky Balboa" when he finally reunites with Marie from the first movie.

I watched it in the 90's when I was a teen, I won a lot of 100-200m sprints..'cause I did the raw egg, milk and honey cocktail before a race...that shit was rocket fuel to me. Rocky and the Mohammed Ali documentaries are the my go to videos for getting pumped up for competitions and training. I can accredit 2 of my silver medals (Martial Arts) to the motivation of these videos, also credit must be given to our competitors, they keep our competitive edge. Keeping it in a true sportsmanship manner.
I remember when my dad first showed me this movie when I was 11-12 and it wasn’t until the end when me and my brothers had questions he answered “The movie wasn’t about winning, or losing.”
It's such a good movie. Rocky is a loser with nothing going good in his life, but he has a dream and he gets his shot. This is the ultimate American story.
The thing I like about the first 2 Rocky movies is that even though Apollo is the champ, he's not a bad guy, even in the second movie the only reason he acts the way he does is for the cameras and to get Rocky to agree to the rematch. He was never a villain. The only problem he had in the first movie was that he did underestimate Rocky because he thought that a local no name fighter wouldn't be up to his standards, but he was never a bad guy.
You got to see Rocky 2 and 3. Instead of looking them like squeals, think of them as episodes. They are really, really good and it expands on Rocky and Apollo's relationship. It really is a good time. Plus someone special is in Rocky 3 (which you may already know).
I agree although I would regard 2 as a direct sequel. I kind of think of 1 and 2 as one very long story as 2 starts almost minutes after the first one ends.
rocky movies works because are all about stallone life, even when he was a hollywood star lost in fame was portrayed in rocky 4 , in rocky 5 you see his fear to lose his status , and even an introspection of him losing in stardom, rocky balboa is about reconciliation with the past ( its the true secuel of rocky in spirit and a kind of epilogue)
You should watch another film with Stallone called "COPLAND". It also has Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Harvey Kietel, Method Man, Janeane Garofalo....excellent movie

Great reaction video. This was an awesome movie to go see when it was brand new and we didn't know anything about it except that it was supposed to be surprisingly good. A clip from the "Gonna Fly Now" scene really got me to want to see it. One thing I really like is that the film's composer Bill Conti took the exciting fight music and turned it into a beautiful classical piece for the closing credits. I had the soundtrack on 8-track tape. I was never a fan of the sequels, which seem to me to just rehash the success of the first one over and over with diminishing returns.
stallone got the idea for this movie from seeing chuck wepner knock down muhammed ali. wepner doesnt look like a fighter in the least, but he lasted until the 15th (ali knocked him out in the last round though, it wasnt a draw like the rocky movie). wepner scored a knockdown with a shot to ali's heart, with a right hook in the 9th. the rest of the fight, ali was clearly winning.

The title fight was choreographed by Stallone himself, so basically every boxing match in a film since then owes a credit to Stallone. The fight was also filmed in reverse, starting with Round 15 and ending with Round 1, as it was easier to put on all the make-up to film the last round and just remove a little bit of it as they went. So by the time they reached Round 1, they had removed all the make-up.
And this is why he is in the Boxing HOF.
This film will always be the best in the series. The studio wanted to give Stallone $150,000 for the script and wanted other stars such as Burt Reynolds, Ryan O' Neal, and James Caan for the title role. Stallone didn't back down, saying that no one else can play the part but him. The rest is as they say is history.
Burgess Meredith was the biggest star they could get in the movie. A legendary film and TV actor with a fifty year career before he played this part. Talia Shire tells a great story about sitting in a cold, dirty Philadelphia building before the crack of dawn with Meredith who looks over at her with a broad smile and says, "Isn't it wonderful that we get to do this?"

@@CapedInformer there were a few lines that he did ad-lib, one particular part was when he was ranting at Mickey he started yelling that the apartment stank and that was because the apartment they were using did actually smell like the inside of an asshole (there was some problem with the toilet).

The really did hit each other, in all the Rocky movies, I think. Maybe not like a real fight, but they beat each other up pretty good during filming.
The whole story behind Stallone writing this is incredible. He went to so many studios with the script and they either rejected it, or the idea of Stallone playing Rocky and he insisted on playing him. He turned down big money and he was completely broke and stuck to his guns.
Also, the dog BUTKUS in this film, was Stallone’s real dog. Kept him company while writing the script. Stallone is a true legend and Carl Weathers was genius casting. Hope you enjoy the second film. It’s the first of the franchise that Stallone directed.

And he got an offer for the screenplay but held out for a studio that would actually let him star in it. Legendary. The ultimate underdog story behind the ultimate underdog story. Him trying to peddle this script around Hollywood without any major acting/writing credentials and going for the glory.

This movies made me start with training and martial arts again, very inspirational. He wrote it himself it has parts in it from his real life problems as far as I heard
fun fact: Stallone based the fight and the character of rocky off boxer chuck wepner. wepner famously challenged alie in 1975. wepner trained like a beast in the catskill mountains for weeks leading up to the fight. he didn't plan to beat ali. he just wanted to go the distance with him. and he almost did. ali outboxed him, opening cuts over both eyes and breaking his nose. but wepner kept fighting. he was beaten by TKO with 19 seconds left in the 15th round.

Sylvester Stallone wrote and (unofficially) co-directed Rocky - he wrote *all* the Rocky movies and solely directed II, III, and IV.
The core theme (which a lot of people miss) was Rocky proving his worth as a fighter - he could hardly care less what others thought of him, but he had to prove it to himself. Creed was a powerhouse and few of his fights ever went past the fifth round. He never cared whether he won or lost the fight - he went the full fifteen rounds against Apollo (something no one else had even come close to doing) and *THAT* was his victory.

Fun Fact. They filmed the fight scene backwards. They would add all the blood and swelling from makeup at the start. As the fight progressed backwards they would remove makeup until you see the unblemished faces.
burgess meredith (mick) is an all-time legendary actor. his later stuff in the "grumpy old men " series in funny, including the outtakes. (especially those, dont miss them.) he was the original penquin in the batman tv series. was on a few of the most classic twilight zone episodes. and he had a 25 year career in film and stage before any of that.

If you learn the back-story to how Sylvester Stallone got this movie made, it'll bless your soul. The man is inspiring. He wrote this story with not a dime in his pocket at the time. He even had to sell his dog to make ends meet. After the screenplay was finally picked up, he found the stranger he sold his dog to and bought it back from him. Amazing story.

@@CapedInformer Yea. Funny though, Stallone said he sold the dog for 25 bucks. When he sold the screenplay for Rocky, he got over 35K. The man he sold his dog to initially refused to sell it back unless Stallone put him in the movie. Stallone refused that but the man finally agreed to sell Stallone his own dog back for 15,000!
On top of being a hugely popular movie, I'm pretty sure it won the Oscar that year too. Talk about a payoff on one's investment.

Sylvester Stallone was always a writer first, he started writing when he was a kid as a hobby. He wrote the script in three days. The love story between Rocky and Adrian I've always found to be one of the most touching in cinema. That first kiss is one of the sexiest ones on screen, because it is so moving and paced perfectly and it's between two very ordinary people who become extraordinary together.
The thing is, I love how his scripts was so rich in character development over the movie series. I especially loved the long pay off in "Rocky Balboa" when he finally reunites with Marie from the first movie.
One of these movies you simply have to own cause they are endlessly rewatchable.

This movie is so good. I love Rocky's character, all his scenes with Adrian are so cute and Rocky is such a wholesome dude.
People think this was a boxing movie , but Stallone actually wrote it as love story of a man & woman . Rocky worked for a loanshark . That's why the ones who didn't pay up , got their hands broken etc. And the woman who played the part of Adrian was also in the Godfather . Another fact , the one who played the part of Mickey , was also in the orig Batman as The Penguin 🐧
I watched it in the 90's when I was a teen, I won a lot of 100-200m sprints..'cause I did the raw egg, milk and honey cocktail before a race...that shit was rocket fuel to me. Rocky and the Mohammed Ali documentaries are the my go to videos for getting pumped up for competitions and training. I can accredit 2 of my silver medals (Martial Arts) to the motivation of these videos, also credit must be given to our competitors, they keep our competitive edge. Keeping it in a true sportsmanship manner.

I remember when my dad first showed me this movie when I was 11-12 and it wasn’t until the end when me and my brothers had questions he answered “The movie wasn’t about winning, or losing.”
It's such a good movie. Rocky is a loser with nothing going good in his life, but he has a dream and he gets his shot. This is the ultimate American story.

The thing I like about the first 2 Rocky movies is that even though Apollo is the champ, he's not a bad guy, even in the second movie the only reason he acts the way he does is for the cameras and to get Rocky to agree to the rematch. He was never a villain. The only problem he had in the first movie was that he did underestimate Rocky because he thought that a local no name fighter wouldn't be up to his standards, but he was never a bad guy.

You got to see Rocky 2 and 3. Instead of looking them like squeals, think of them as episodes. They are really, really good and it expands on Rocky and Apollo's relationship. It really is a good time. Plus someone special is in Rocky 3 (which you may already know).
I agree although I would regard 2 as a direct sequel. I kind of think of 1 and 2 as one very long story as 2 starts almost minutes after the first one ends.

The guy who played Micky was the penguin in the batman tv show in the 60s his is Burgess Meredith amazing actor.
rocky movies works because are all about stallone life, even when he was a hollywood star lost in fame was portrayed in rocky 4 , in rocky 5 you see his fear to lose his status , and even an introspection of him losing in stardom, rocky balboa is about reconciliation with the past ( its the true secuel of rocky in spirit and a kind of epilogue)
You should watch another film with Stallone called "COPLAND". It also has Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Harvey Kietel, Method Man, Janeane Garofalo....excellent movie

fun facts the retire line of mickey was improvised and the man who does the bel at the fight is stallones father and they filmed the fight backwards to spare time with the makeup :) , yeah i think they used to cut the eye a bit to let the blood out now a days you would be called mad if you did that XD
Great reaction video. This was an awesome movie to go see when it was brand new and we didn't know anything about it except that it was supposed to be surprisingly good. A clip from the "Gonna Fly Now" scene really got me to want to see it. One thing I really like is that the film's composer Bill Conti took the exciting fight music and turned it into a beautiful classical piece for the closing credits. I had the soundtrack on 8-track tape. I was never a fan of the sequels, which seem to me to just rehash the success of the first one over and over with diminishing returns.

A lot of people miss the point and the heart of what the original Rocky film is about.. you included.
stallone got the idea for this movie from seeing chuck wepner knock down muhammed ali. wepner doesnt look like a fighter in the least, but he lasted until the 15th (ali knocked him out in the last round though, it wasnt a draw like the rocky movie). wepner scored a knockdown with a shot to ali's heart, with a right hook in the 9th. the rest of the fight, ali was clearly winning.
