Wohoo, a Sarah deep dive!! I immediately fell in love with this song, when I heard it in an episode of "Due South". The piano version, which is a hidden track on the album, is so haunting. If I remember this correctly, this song was inspired by letters she received from a stalker/obsessed fan and wrote it from that guy´s perspective. Lyrics like "And I would be the one to hold you down, kiss you so hard" and "I'll take your breath away and after I'd wipe away the tears just close your eyes dear" were more threats than anything else.
Wow, that's crazy what she did with the stalker-lines, though having that context does make their darker intensity clearer. And thanks again for sending this and everything else, Michaela. You bring so much to everything I do these days!
@@star-xz5sj This mentally disturbed guy actually sued her for using his letters to her as being the basis for this song. Before it went to trial, he offed himself. Unfortunately, artists in the public eye become targets for unsavory characters... and this was pre- social media. I'm betting their publicists now check the messages they get and eliminate the nasty ones.
I'm happy that you're doing a Sarah McLachlan deep dive! Fumbling is my favourite album of hers, but her music is great in general. She's touring this summer for the 30th anniversary of this album. Looking forward to it!
Great reaction, and delighted to take this journey with you, I had this CD back in the day and loved it, and honestly haven’t listened to it in decades so this will be fun! This song got a lot of radio play, which is how I even knew about her, and the time was ripe for what she was doing with Lilith fair and a lot of other super strong female artists were coming out and spreading their messages and talking about scary shit in beautiful songs… it’s ironic that I just said a lot of radio play because honestly that’s what Lilith was about, women had to fight hard for radio play. They were only allowed like every fourth song or something stupid like that and they had something to say and Sarah McLachlan is responsible for pushing the boundaries and opening doors… when this song was popular, we had the same ideas that you did about it, passionate love romance all that stuff, it wasn’t till recently that I found out what the song is actually about and it really gives a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘context is EVERYTHING’. The words coming from her to a lover sound passionate and orgasmic, those exact same words coming from a creepy stalker in letters, threatening to take her breath away…just blows my mind what she did with it. Her falsetto is gorgeous ..enjoy the ride ✨ ✌💚😎
@@catherineday951 wow, … as a survivor of suicide it pains me to hear of anyone taking their life, but somehow it seems like the only way this could have ended, luckily Miss McLaughlin had the last laugh so to speak… thanks for the info✌
Who ever thought a stalker song could be so beautiful. Interesting note, the stalker sued Sarah for using lines from his letters in the song. He later stated he just wanted to go to court to be near her. He later comitted suiscide. What must have been truly bizarre and terrifying for her.
Matt...you have to check out a song called Silence by Delerium. Sarah is featured here, and her vocals are incredible with her range being very similar to Possession, but really ramped up! It's remarkable and would love to see your reaction to it. The song is also on the soundtrack to the movie Brokedown Palace with Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale.
So excited that you’re doing a deep dive into Sarah. She is a beautiful singer. I’ve been lucky enough to see her live several times and have been astounded by her voice each time. As someone else mentioned, this song was inspired by letters she received from a stalker. Looking forward to the next one!
Her "Surfacing" album is a masterpiece.
Every track on this album is gold.
Looking forward to hearing more of her catalogue. I only know a couple of her songs but she has a really beautiful voice.
I only know her radio hits and agree she has a beautiful voice. Eager to hear more.
So excited for this deep dive!

He tried to sue her for credit/royalties, but committed suicide before the case got to court.

She wrote this after receiving disturbing letters from obsessed fan.
