This is more about communicating math than anything else. Speaking off, you really need to work on your writing. Without context some of those "X" and "1" symbols looked like scribbles or "i". I think a math genius would immediately see that the two numbers that we need to take the square root of would have to be 4 and 1 and therefor would not need to do the long calculation.
If a= sqrt(4-x) , b=sqrt(x+1) , both a,b are non-negative and a^2+b^2=5, a+b=3
