      Yes, it feels really strange to slip in between a large cargo vessel and a cement wall. Just feels odd.

    You are in Helsinki! I can see Dirona from my home window! Enjoy your stay!

      Thanks! We've only been in Helsinki for 23 hours and already walked over 10 miles through town. The excellent weather is helping as well. We love being right downtown.

    It looks like you're in Finland at the moment! While you're here you should definitely visit some places in Aland islands and Turku archipelago! Best regards from Finland. Enjoy the Baltic sea!

      You are right! We're currently in Helsinki (mvdirona.com/) and have had a great time in Aland (mvdirona.com/2019/05/mariehamn-aland/) and did a few stops in the Turku archipelago before arriving in Helsinki. We plan to go to the Saimaa lakes region and, after that, we'll spend a bit more time enjoying the Turku archipelago. We're going to run out of good weather before we run out of great places to visit in this region!

    It must have been an uneasy feeling having to pass between the ship and wall, is your boat equipped with thrusters and is that how you were able to fend off the wall?

    • @MVDirona
      @MVDirona  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, Dirona is thruster equipped. We didn't need them as we worked down past the cargo vessel. But, as we go to the front of the frieghter we needed the thrusters in a very big way. The tug that assisted the cargo vessel into the lock "tied off" by just powering up against the side of the lock. That holds him securely in place but the wash off of a several thousand horsepower tug in a narrow place is simply amazing. We ended up moving back in beside the freighter to avoid the wash of the tug but even back there, the water motion from the tug driving into the lock wall was still quite strong.

    Great clip! I’ll bet your first mate guided you right through that lock. Lol Enjoy!

    Hello. Have you visited the Island of Hiddensee? You really have to come in summer. 😊👌

    • @MVDirona
      @MVDirona  ปีที่แล้ว

      We haven't visited Hiddensee. One season in the Baltic sea was nowhere close to enough but we plan to return. Hiddensee looks beautiful.

    Close quarters maneuvering separates the men from the boys.

    • @MVDirona
      @MVDirona  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might have slipped slightly towards the boys camp on this one :-). The wash from ship assist tug "parked" by running at high thrust into the tug wall was throwing a massive amount of water so we needed to back down 50 yards or so from the front of the lock.

    Do u have any idea how deep that channel was ?

    • @MVDirona
      @MVDirona  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Kiel canal uses a controlling depth 37' deep so the locks have to be at least that. I would guess the locks themselves are not much more than 37'.

      The Kiel Canal is always interesting. It's not common to get that close to big ships and the canal itself is an adventure all by itself. All the best to you from Norway right now.
