    I show how to replace the breather reed on a Briggs and Stratton 550EX mower. This issue ended up being a bad head gasket, so check that first before you change the reed its easier to access the head than the reed. www.joinhoney....

    Update changing the head gasket solved the oil leaking out of the filter issue. The mower runs good again used it today. Totally awesome this is the first video on my channel to reach 100 thousand views, I thank everyone of you who made this possible.

      chriss4365 , Thoughts? I have a Craftsman push mower.Few years old.Brought it used so, history is a ?.Apears the mower was not abused.It does start and runs fine.The issue is it leaks oil pretty heavy.Well, enough a leak not to run mower and is steady a leak.Oil comes out the air filter.The area around the carb that has white plastic over it and behind that sits a black house that runs to a silver pipe sorta that goes to engine.The engine is a 6.75 Briggs and Straton.What do you suspect? Lastly, is gaskets and the like pretty easy to find and buy?

      If the oil is dripping out it could be the breather reed but if it is gushing out it is probably the head gasket. If you need to see that done i have a video for changing the head gasket. They seem prone to fail as i have changed the gasket twice on this mower. I called sears and told them the make and model of the mower and they located the head gasket. th-cam.com/video/khrqANLL3Rc/w-d-xo.html

    I was taught to lift up on the flywheel by hand ( enough to pick the mower up a little ) and smack the end of the drive shaft with a hard plastic hammer or equivalent to jar it loose. The flywheel nut should be left on, just below the end of the shaft to protect the threads. Of course this only works if you have enough room to put your fingers under the flywheel.

Can someone explain just what is wrong with the breather valve?? Ok, just read your follow up about the head gasket being blown. I guess that makes sense, the blown head gasket was pressurizing the crankcase pushing the oil out of the breather....

    • @chriss4365
      @chriss4365  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Changing the valve should of stopped the oil leaking into the air filter. The issue ended up being the head gasket had failed. I would start with that first as its easier to do than the reed. I have a video doing that on the channel and that mower is still being used by my dad as of now with no issues.

    Ehhh. If your getting blowby this fixes nothing...there are actually multiple reasons as to why oil would be coming out of your carb. The reed. Blowby/bad stuck rings/ head gasket/ valve seals. This should say ONE of the ways

    • @chriss4365
      @chriss4365  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      dylan scronce as I stated in the below comment it says the head gasket ended up being the issue. Breather reed is the only thing that keeps the oil in on a mower. But the fact it was gushing out means blown head gasket too much pressure so the reed stays open.

    I just found an old 1980 Snapper with a Briggs on it. It looks like you were getting oil mixed with gas that would point to the gasket prob you found. Thanks for posting this vid because I'm getting oil leaking from the air-filter area that's not mixed with gas but it seems to happen only when I tip the mower over to work on it so I'm thinking this is likely a reed problem like you posted here. It may not leak while it's running normally(not tipping the mower over), I don't know yet but yeah, thanks for posting this, I know where to go now if it leaks while in normal operation, looks like an inexpensive part too. Of course the engine is a 1980 model, I assume it has the same basic reed design, you think it does? I'm thinking it shouldn't leak that much and so fast just putting it on it's side for a minute or two or does that sound normal even when the reed is good, anybody know? Even when the reed is working, it doesn't look like it was made to guarantee an air-tight close.

    • @chriss4365
      @chriss4365  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt they do much in redesigning these engines. Turning a mower sideways can even cause fuel to leak. The reed shouldn't let enough oil out on its side to be noticeable.

    • @scolopede
      @scolopede 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OK, it could be something else but yeah it's all pointing the reed, maybe lost it's form, maybe cracked. I'm going to go ahead and order a new reed before I even look at the old one, the engine is almost 40 years old, sure can't hurt to put a new one in. Those engines were made better back then so I'm going to try and save it. The old Snapper rocks, only paid $75 for it, I'm impressed with it. Looks like it's made to last a lifetime with easy to replace parts, designed that way.

      Reed valve. Your issue may be the head gasket. Mine ended up being the head gasket.

  • @Z-Ack
    @Z-Ack 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What would happen if you plugged up that flapper? Would it just blow a head gasket? I put a spring on top of the reed that only added a little bit more pressure on it.. no more leaks but mine only dripped a little bit out.. enough to make it look oily in the side where the carb wasent picking it up with a shitty filter on it.. but now i got a surging carb after the motors warm. The reed valve couldnt cause that could it? Like if pressure built up and messed with combustion or gorernator maybe? But no smoke, only a small bit of searching... b&s 7.75..

    • @chriss4365
      @chriss4365  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      plugging that will bow out engine gaskets but probably not the head gasket do not seal it. It is their to release pressure. If you change the reed and it still leaks oil you may need a new head gasket like my mower did.

I made the vid for you and others for thought on where to aim.Also curious why so much carbon build it on piston etc.The mower appears not used much yet I see a good amount of build.Any event, the head gasket is off for inspection to help.I'll await for thoughts for I continue on mower.Heres the vid.... m.th-cam.com/video/BrgOKaBLgZM/w-d-xo.html

    • @chriss4365
      @chriss4365  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Todd Bearden what is bogus, it is running in the beginning. If you read I mentioned that the head gasket was the issue not the Reed valve. This video shows you how to change the part so don't say that it's bogus. The video shows what the name implies. The Reed is usually the issue but in this case it ended up being the head gasket causing excess pressure on the Reed making the oil come out.

    • @tebeardenkahboom1
      @tebeardenkahboom1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      chriss4365 yeah I saw that but it would have been nice to discover that with you. If you would have fired it up after you put the new Reed in and it still was doing the same thing then we could have experienced it with you. That makes for a good video.
