    Precise and to the point. I've seen way to many of these mowers that are basically a toss away once they won't run any longer. Although, the plastic carb won't rust.

    Thanks! I was asked to look at a toro 22” similar to that one. I figured I would at least start by draining the oil and replacing the spark plug and filter. After doing that, it was still spitting oil, so I searched and found your video, which almost confirms that all hope is lost for this puppy. :(
    Thanks for the education!

    I’ve been recording the compression of all 4 strokes coming into my shop the last month or so to get an average baseline. Briggs, Tecumseh, and Koehler. They all have ranged between 55-65 psi with one coming in at 85. Thing is, they all passed and operated fine. In your vid when you did yours I was surprised when you said it was low, then even MORE surprised when it failed the check. I’m doing this only about 18 months so I’m learning. Is there a reason why my checks are coming in “low” but still seem to pass? Thank you, and please keep up the great work. I love your vids my man.

    Air coming back up through the dipstick tube could be a ring problem or cylinder scoring like you said but it could also be a head gasket...if the head gasket fails internally (between the cylinder and the pushrod gallery) then air will make its way into the crankcase and out the dipstick tube...this is where the briggs and stratton head gaskets are known to fail

  • @Patrick4959

    i,d have a good look at the piston rings mate and maybe the cylinder block walls just to confirm it etc unless you have done it off camera still a good video mate cheers from Australia to your area.

    another thing that happens is the head gasket is bad. or your valves not seating. for the 65 compression Briggs has a valve release so 65 can be good still 80 is better but if the head gasket is leaking then the compression would be lower. a good way to tell if it is a head gasket leak into the valves is run it shut it off and pull your dipstick if smoke comes out then you know exhaust is getting in from a blown head gasket.

    That compression gauge is for cars not mowers. Also most mower engines have compression releases to make starting easier. Makes for lowered pressure values.

    I have the same one. I have oil spitting out of the muffler I think. What is that silver piece in the front left? According to my manual, it's saying it's the muffler. It's spewing oil out of that hole and blowing white smoke. I know what you're gonna say.... Yes, I did do a tune-up... I changed the filter and spark plug and also changed the oil. I don't know anything about doing a compression check. I may have to take it into an authorized dealer.

  • @chicamolly

    Likely a blown head gasket between the cylinder and pushrod gallery

    • @doublewide6
      @doublewide6  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so, because there is not oil pushing out the breather, no smoke in the dipstick, but I can check. The engine was way overfilled with oil when I got it as well.

    • @macknumber9
      @macknumber9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes much more likely that the head gasket would fail before an issue with ring/cylinder...the air will get down into the crankcase if gasket fails between cylinder and pushrod gallery which is where they always fail on briggs...
      I had an engine spitting oil and smoking simply because the wrong oil was put in...turns out the lady put 2 cycle oil in the crankcase...that low viscosity was making its way right past the rings into the cylinder and burning off and then spitting out the exhaust because not all of it was getting burnt...it was flooding the cylinder with oil...

    I have a question. you pulled down the cover for the air cleaner and there is a small plastic tube that runs off the full tank at the top. why would gas spill out of it when the tank is full when moving the mower. it starts to leak out of the air filter housing on to the mower deck under the air filter ?any one know ?
