I garden in Minnesota, have lived in this home since our marriage. We've been here for 41 years. My gardens started about 25 years ago. I've kept notebooks with what I've planted, notes on what I want to plant, and what I call my dream gardens. It's great to go back and read them, to see comments, and read little anecdotes and comments from kids or grandkids. I have 6 or seven notebooks so far. Love it!
Didn't think I could love you and your videos more and then you showed your garden journal and talk about how it all started. What a beautiful journey 😍
I love when you have dirt on your face. It’s a sign of your hard work and the reality of working in the yard. Thank you pretty lady for keeping it real.😘 P.S. I loved your garden journal. Thank you for sharing.
This is a wonderful example of the power of journaling, capturing life in the moment. As the scriptures say, making a record enlarges our memory. Why is enlarging our memory important? Bc it keeps our past alive, we can relive that exact moment as recorded in that time. It connects us to the people, the places, and the events that make up our life. We can journal about anything. Especially important is the gift that our journal provides our posterity. Bc we have captured our life in writing or in recording or in video, our voice, our example, becomes a powerful force and strength to them after we are gone. Imagine Laura's great grandchildren hearing stories about her around the dinner table. Now imagine those same great grandchildren reliving those same stories in perfect detail through her garden journal, through her video journal. They will hear her voice. They will see her image. They will feel her passion. They will see how she handles adversity. They will come to know her in a very real and intimate way. What an incredible gift and legacy to leave your posterity.
So true. My kids never met my grandmother but she had a large camcorder on her shoulder always...so they know her laugh and smile and since of humor etc.. it's priceless
Just a tour of your garden makes me happy. Finding your garden journal must have been an unexpected joy. You have such a good eye for planning your garden, but just sometimes less is better. Grass has such a calming nature and your grass is always so lush and green, that it can be as attractive as a flower bed. I’m sure whatever you plan will be beautiful.
I was just out by the road cutting the grass and a lady stopped and said my yard was looking good…all thanks to you Laura!! I have a long row of day lilies with a perennial flower bed on each end. I just bought more perennial seeds to get started. Foxglove, Butterfly bush and columbine.
This was so nice. I especially enjoyed you sharing your garden journal with us Laura. Very sweet & being able to be vulnerable with us huge! You are so kind and your work ethic is amazing and I’m so proud to be a long, long time viewer. I have the same excitement and anticipation with every video & you never disappoint! You have given the world a gift. I hope you realize it. Thank you 🙏🏼😊♥️
I’m from Iowa, and when I seen Benjamin out there with Aaron I thought to myself, in a couple of years Benjamin would be old enough to drive that tractor and him and Aaron will be arguing over who is going to drive that thing lol. They start young here lol.
I understand, but my granddaughter could drive at 14 but she lives in the city of Bettendorf not a farm😂. She 15 now and as soon as she finishes some class she can drive in certain states up to 30 miles. That means she can go to the barn where she stables her horse in Illinois. I’m from Illinois, and it’s weird to me. Illinois is so much more strict about young drivers.
Sweet Annie, it is another love of a plant that if you plant it once you will never be free. It smells wonderful. It blooms late summer, early fall, tiny insignificant little balls. This is when it will dry and work as a marvelous filler and dry perfectly. It makes a great wreath base. Did I say how good it smells? I was told that it is considered a strewing herb. You would spread it on your dirt floors (way back in the day). I agree with you on the tomatoes, pruning makes them easier to manage, and maybe bigger tomatoes, but yield, I've never seen much difference. Your cut flower garden is probably my favorite of all the things you have in summer. Such abundance, so neat and tidy. Simply amazing. Thank you for sharing your journal! What a treat! How much fun is it to look back, it gives us a picture of ourselves and our gardens when both were younger. You have such neat handwriting. Wonderful.
I could see a day when you turn the cut flower garden into a formal garden. And move the cut flower garden to the back where the kids play area is. I love your garden in all its glory.
Photography is how I record the garden year by taking a pic of each plant at it's prime and each section of the landscape through the four seasons. Thanks for the Cut Garden Tour, Laura, and sharing your garden journal with us.
The Gara in those planters at the head of the flower garden is so beautiful in those planters. I love whispie, fairy like plants and with all the other things going on in those planters, they pop the entire thing. Gorgeous! Those hydrangeas are gorgeous. I planted some lime light ones this year and they are only about a foot tall, but blooming their little hearts out. I will be getting some of this variety next year. I absolutely love hydrangeas.
I agree! I pruned my tomatoes for the last 2 years and the crop was sparse each year. This year I ditched pruning and I have a TON! Great tomato season!
Love your 2008 journal! So cute! Digital recording is great, but I miss the artistic creativity of hand-drawn plans and handwritten notes. This inspires me to do a gardening journal in 2025. Thank you so much for sharing this and all of your wonderful gardening experiences.
What a treat seeing your garden journal from 2008! It’s inspiring for today’s gardens with the plant tags and seed packets. I began journaling after my master gardener training in the mid 1990’s and still hand journal to this day along with pictures and video clips. It’s fun looking back on plans, experiments, wins and losses and a wealth of knowledge accumulated over time 🌼🌺🐛🦋🕸🪲💐
I LOVED your journal…I’m so glad you saved it!! Sweet memories. Look how you’ve progressed!!! Amazing! Those containers in the flower garden are so beautiful!!
That is exactly what I do with a garden journal. Nothing fancy ; just taping in all plant tags and location in the garden planted , all seed packets and dates I seeded trays in the greenhouse. And what fun to look back and see how much progress I have made. Sometimes when I buy a plant and it preforms well I have to look back at plant tags so I can order the right variety of seed. Thanks for sharing with us your garden journal!!!!!
Nearly 6 decades of gardening and I have never kept a garden journal, and wasn’t particularly interested in doing so…until you shared your first one! It’s wonderful and I would happily have looked at each page. I love your idea of putting the tags and seed packets in it.
I love your journal. The young Laura planning her garden. The Gardens look good and the area in front of the Hartley will be beautiful when you finish. Thank you doing these for us. Have a blessed day everyone.
Loved seeing your journal. It takes time but it’s a treasure that can’t be replaced. As soon as possible get the children involved with making their own. You have a load of gorgeous pictures of the kids as well as some your son has taken.
no worries Laura - the garden will always offer you the opportunity for new adventures - as we gardeners know! Trees grow and sunny spots become shady; trees fall and shady spots become sunny; our interests change and so we change our gardens. It's a never ending journey !!!!
I love your old journal. I document my garden by putting together a calendar every year. Makes great Christmas gifts. My aunt cuts out the pictures at the end of the year and makes note cards. My garden continues to give.
Loved the tour! Beautiful space and such a variety of plant material! Loved your journal! A few growing seasons in my past I kept a journal much like yours. Saving plant tags was a one of the best things I added to the journal. Yours looks a little more diligent than mine!! I just laughed out loud when you worried we would think looking at your journal was like looking at others vacation pictures!!! Hit me so funny. And actually loved seeing your journal! Thanks for just being you Laura! You are why I keep coming back each day! ❤❤❤
Precious journal. Show to the kids. Journals are a way to see how you have evolved. I made a journal for when we had our granddaughter I gave it to her for her 13th B Day. Your flower garden tour just looks so beautiful. You are amazing what you can grow in the 100+ weather. Thank you ❤❤❤❤
Love your property. You guys are so committed to your land. It’s nice to see young people working, planning, beautifying and enjoying their land. Wish more people your age thought like you two do ❤
It's so wonderful to see your garden journal. I've got journals dating back from 1971, then I have all my prayer journals dating back from the early 1990's. I'm an artist and I always date my work, even my scribbles. It's so fun to go back and read through things. Loved this video.
You will never be rid of Sweet Annie. It makes a wonderful wreath base ( kind of like a straw wreath. ) Dried smells wonderful. I used to use it for the base of herbal wreaths! Excellent.
Love your garden journal - it speaks volumes of your success today. So very admirable - your kids are going to love this when they are adults. Love your videos - such a passion. ❤️
So glad you discovered your first journal and shared it with us. I enjoy seeing your gardens and following the changes you make. Thanks for being a part of my day!
awww, thank you for taking us around in that heat! everything is so lush and mother nature just has a way of taking whatever you throw at her and making it look like a painting... just gorgeous!! love those hydrangeas, wow! and i love how the two of you just forge ahead... always something in the works - it's exciting! and you do as much as you can by yourselves, which is admirable... and i imagine, quite satisfying, not to mention the lesson you are subtly teaching your children - plan your work, work your plan, and work hard.. the results are amazing... 🥰❤thanks for the video!! 🥰❤
I never seen a journal! I would have loved to see this 18 to 20 years ago! What a wonderful idea. I've never heard of anyone doing this. Thanks for sharing.😊
It was so nice to see your garden journal! It's something every gardener can relate to, and so personal -- tied to so many memories. Thanks for including it. Maybe you can invite folks to share their journals during the winter? It would be fascinating to see.
What a fun journal to look back on, i am so happy you have all that space now to plant everything you want, i keep every plant tag and write where in my garden it has been planted so i can look at the care they need until i get familiar with said plant, they are all stored in a folder. x
Loved the music as you were working by your mantle! Your first garden journal is precious. I enjoy everything about your videos and love watching your precious children grow! Don’t know how you do it all in the heat you have had this summer! Continue to enjoy your family and your life! I watch your videos every morning with my breakfast to get motivated for the day!
Thank you for braving the heat to give us a wonderful tour of the flower gardens! Can't wait to see your vision for the area by the Hartley to develop.
You "had me" with "garden journal." I enjoyed seeing your '08 journal and hope you will show the next five journals if they are available before you started filming. We all try to catalogue what we put in our spaces and I personally like to see others' work to see if I can be more effective in what I say and keep. Thank you.
In addition to a journal, I use a ringed binder where I insert the plant tags in those loose page refills that usually hold actual photographs. This way I can move the pages and organize it by areas in my garden.
Me too! I also have a section in the 3-ring binder where I add photos and articles about plant care or garden designs. It's satisfying to go through the binders in the winter. When we got ready to move, I photocopied a couple years of journals for the new owner.
@@janpower7446 You are very considerate to have a copy for the future owner. I will just hand over my binder and hope they don’t dig out all the perennials, including all my various hydrangeas. Hopefully they will be gardeners or appreciate all of the plants . I think it’s a great idea to have a copy for oneself so I will definitely use your idea.
Taking a tour of your cut flower garden is a delightful showcase of your dedication and passion for gardening. Your ability to create and nurture such a vibrant and beautiful space highlights both your creativity and your deep appreciation for the natural world. This tour not only reflects the beauty of your garden but also the care and effort you’ve put into cultivating it. Sharing this experience allows others to appreciate the joy and serenity that come from a well-tended garden. Your enthusiasm for flowers and gardening is truly inspiring and heartwarming. And I am Floating Village Life.
Yes Kween it was 2014 when I discovered you on TH-cam that year I bought my first home! Your expertise in English Gardening in High Desert brings me back to your channel year after year even during the winter months I find your channel very valuable
You guys should take down that Tree outside of your kitchen when everything is torn apart now, before you plant grass. That way it won’t be hard to bring equipment in to take it down. Also, I keep a fancy recipe box full of plant tags & such for my garden journal 🪴🌻🌿
Oh my gosh. Even your handwriting is beautiful! I asked my husband if there's anything you don't do beautifully, and he said, "Well, her fingernails are dirty." So are mine:) --so are his--we farm for a living in Montana. Love your videos and always look forward to the next one.
It's such a gift how you and your family truly love and enjoy your home and gardens. They provide peace, play and roots. Thank you for sharing that gift with the GA community.
I'm sure you'll never run out of projects, Laura. It's in your nature...lol. I have always kept my plant tags and dated them also. Also included where I planted them, and their progress. I have a notebook journal and I too draw sketches of where things are. Sometimes I have to make edits, cuz I like to move things around...lol. I could tell your journal was very nostalgic for you. Just to think of how far you and Aaron have come, you must have to pinch yourself to see if it's real. You two should have an enormous sense of pride for all you have accomplished, and how many people love you and your family and your crew. I hope God continues to bless you all! You are truly GOOD and LOVING people. You make us feel like family and that means a lot to all of us following and sharing your journey with you.
Good Morning! 🌻 I love all the color! Journals are a special keepsake! I have several of my Grandmother's & my husband's Grandmother's! They kept track of everything from trips they went on,eggs they collected, livstock they sold, etc! I am excited for you on getting the sprinkler system installed! 😍📖🖋🪻🌿💚

i love when Russell appeared randomly in your video
…. I know and Roxie, my Corgi gets super excited and wants to be sure I see him too!
I've loved watching your place come together all these years. God bless you ,Laura....you, your family, and the rest of your team.
I loved seeing your garden journal. I’m glad you kept it and shared with us.
Didn't think I could love you and your videos more and then you showed your garden journal and talk about how it all started. What a beautiful journey 😍
You should recreate the apartment garden. It would actually be useful to everyday people with very small spaces.
I love this idea!
Me too! Love it. ❤

That would be boring!
I like that idea!

Oh my gosh. Even your handwriting is beautiful! I asked my husband if there's anything you don't do beautifully, and he said, "Well, her fingernails are dirty." So are mine:) --so are his--we farm for a living in Montana. Love your videos and always look forward to the next one.
Love your comments!
Not surprised at all how much you packed into that first garden. You still do it! 😁❤️
I love seeing your garden journal!
Everything is Beautiful! Your jornal is telling how much is your Passion for plants, and gardening is real.
It's such a gift how you and your family truly love and enjoy your home and gardens. They provide peace, play and roots. Thank you for sharing that gift with the GA community.
The journal was awesome! I wish I was that organized
Laura, thanks for sharing your journal with us! It's always interesting to see how each of us gardeners got started.
Your journal is so cool and completely unlike someone's vacation slides. Thank you for sharing and for your endless inspiration!,
🪴WHEN YOU LOVE TO GARDEN IT DOES’NT MATTER HOW MUCH SPACE YOU HAVE. YOU WILL MAKE IT WORK‼️🪴
You , your family and your video's are delightful and make this world a better place!
Seeing the journal was super inspiring! I always say I should keep track and don’t. Something else to add to my to-do list! ❤
Vintage lamp posts along the path to the Hartley would look great!
Those two large containers in the cut garden are outstanding.
i will try this combo next year. Thanks for showing us these lovely plants.
Absolutely loved seeing your 2008 journal. So inspiring, I’m going to get a journal and start. Thanks for sharing!! Love from Texas
I LOVED seeing your older garden journal! I wish I had kept one all the years I e gardened, what fun to go back and look at it years later.
