They're not Swedish or even European if that's what you may have thought. Apologies if I'm wrong, I just like spreading information about these beautiful people and their beautiful music. They're from war torn northern Africa. The Taureg camel herder peoples turning traditional rhythms into modern music with the use of guitars and bass guitars, especially electric. Some members actually met at dictator, Muammar Gaddafi's military camps in Libya where I think they were forced to do military training and service (been a long time since I read about the topic). Check out Modu Mokta if you haven't already. They're a younger Taureg "desert blues rock band" from the same region. More modern and more heavy, but also Taureg desert blues rockers. Most songs of both band's are in the native Tamesheq language spoken by the Taureg. They likely speak Arabic and other tribal language at times, due to their geographical location. I first saw Tinarewen randomly at a world music festival in Adelaide, Australia called WOMAD in 2004 (available pro shot on TH-cam and one of their best recorded live performances) and have been a fan ever since. They absolutely blew my mind and I was already a heavily experienced touring musician at the time. 20yrs later and I'm so happy that they still tour, especially when they formed in '79 and have lived in such a dangerous region of the world. Fun fact, they don't have birthdays and most have no idea what date of birth they have. So this has caused many issues when trying to get passports and visa's when they first got asked to tour outside Africa.
This band, Tinariwen, brings sensations of peace, love and happiness to my heart. Love them. I keep this video open to play whenever the world makes me sad because they lift my heart. Bless them and may they reach more and more hearts around the world.

I'm Argentinean. Here, our folk music has a series of rhythms inherited from Afro-Peruvian culture. The enslaved Africans between the 12th and 19th centuries brought with them rhythms and songs that were impregnated into the dominant Hispanic culture in the viceroyalty of Lima. The curious thing is that the rhythm of the second song in this video is EXACTLY THE SAME as some styles that in Peru are called "Festejo" and "Marinera". In fact, in Argentina we have several styles that inherit that rhythm, such as the "Zamba", the "Chacarera" and the "Chamamé". I firmly believe that one day African music and American music will intersect again.
This is the best band I've heard in a great long while - it's mystic blues - reminds me of the seventies in the states, freedom....they know what they're doing. That elusive band everyone looks for and can't find - the band that knows just who they are.....very cool.
Love this. The use of the steel string acoustic guitar is brilliant. It's like a blues/rock groove with that middle east mode over it. The acoustic guitar adds an folky feel to it. The song is all in one key.
