What we love in our Thor: Layout, stove, heat system, its 21' size & the OHV lift kit we had installed. What we dont like: Having only 200 AH's of lithium, wiring birdsnests, poor insulation, non functioning balmar, popup leaks no spare tire and balsa quality "woodwork" w/the horrible faux woodgrain contact paper. Also, to truly stop the inverter from draining power, we need to turn it off from the unit below the futon/bed, which is inside a caged box. The only way to the unit is thru the rear doors and I often scrape my hand reaching thru the cage for the switch within.
For the skylight noise, cut a piece of foam rubber, about 2” thick, and slightly larger than the opening. Push the foam into the opening. If it’s cut big enough, it should stay in place and will lessen the noise considerably. If you have some sewing skills, cover it in fabric. I made one for our MaxAir fan and it really helps.
Epoch Batteries makes a 300ah that with a slight modification to the handle straps (cut them off) will fit where your 100ah’s are. Pretty much plug and play. We now have 600ah. They run about $1000 per battery.
Our 2023 RAM Promaster Travato is very quiet when we drive. No noise from the windows. Our build is solid and components are reliable. Of course you guys take your van on roads we'd never consider :)
4:33 we drive a Sprinter 170 extended everywhere! We take it to downtown Columbus, Ohio every week. We don’t really have any problems with the length of our van. We park it everywhere, except parking garages. We’re too tall for that, of course.
On batteries-We have a solis px which is a similar layout to your van. We added 8 100 amp battle born lithium batteries to our van. 6 inside and 2 underneath. Sounds like overkill but we can run our ac in humid high heat for 8 hours at least. It dies give us what you named which is it works and we can do whatever we want. We also have a victron 3000 watt inverter/ charger. My hubby is a master mechanic who manages a fleet of electric buses so we only had to pay for materials not labor on the system. Cost some money but best decision we have ever done on our van. Could be worth adding some batteries to your system. Hopefully all your van issues will get sorted soon.
Good to see real world items that are good and bad. Some things people would never think about before buying. Good job. Mr Lemon has actually been pretty reliable as far as the promaster chassis hasn't it? Only problem was the alternator and I believe that was the one for the lithium charge probably installed at factory. We just got back from a 4000 mile trip in the 18A and average mileage was 17.4 which I'm good with.
I have seen all the videos, so I know all the things that have gone wrong in your van. But I think it would be an interesting list to post. I mean the list MUST be like a thousand things by now. And one thing that really stood out for me over the course of the videos is the battery location. There they are just hanging under the van and God help you if you get in snow country and you get snow and ice packed around those things just from driving down the road. What a mess that would be.
We took our new Sprinter camper van on it's first trip a week ago - on a 4 day snow camping / XC ski trip, staying in a Sno-park, with nighttime temperatures down to like 9 degrees one night ( and 14F the other nights ). Without our batteries being inside being warmed by our diesel heater we'd be in a world of hurt I'd say.
I had a ProMaster at my last job. No a fan. I just got a Transit at my new job which so far I like. We have an 05 Airstream Interstate which we take out about every weekend but we'd like a different interior layout.
Love you guys! I had a Winnebago Solis pocket snd just upgraded to a Storyteller Lt on the Ford Transit chassis. So far, I love it! Quiet and a quality you can feel.
We have had two airstream trailers 2013/2021 ….. minor issues but fixed through warranty. Love the quality. Thinking one day if we can afford it to downsize to a class b airstream or something close in quality. I really think u guys got a lemon….and covid is no excuse for the rv companies as they were charging crazy prices during that time…..keep the videos coming really enjoying them…..
The fact that you guys persevere beyond the endless issues is inspiring, but thanks to you (and other horror stories) I will never buy a Thor. Thanks for the video.
I like your list of things you like - those are the reasons we got a van and are excited to go camp some more ( first trip in a van just completed - 3 1/2 day xc ski trip ). Haven't had ours long enough to develop that list of cons, but I do like our bathroom and roof rack!
Give the Coachmen Cross Trail a good looking over cuz I think that is what my guess. Build quality is not all that great, but it does have a reasonable price compared to our Ekko. The Ekko build quality is better, but they have had issues just like the Cross Trail. I would get on the owner's facebook website cuz they will let you know the issues.
I saw you other video about the b+ ford van😊 well that looks really good however I just found out he winniebago view now also have all wheel drive which will be my next rig when I upgrade from my 20AT
They have interior covers for the skylight. It makes a huge difference. Ours attached by magnets and was super easy to easy to install and costs under $100. Get one and your driving experience will totally change. Why they don’t come standard in vans is beyond understanding. And we turn off our inverter when we are not using that kind of power. We turn it off to sleep at night ( unless we are running the ac). It may help your power savings. We have a covid built. 2020 Winnebago Boldt and move our van. It even has a porcelain flushing toilet 🎉
I've certainly had my issues with Thor and will tell all not to buy Thor... but... there are certainly some things that are nice on my Tellaro 20k. Having a rear bath real water system with grey/black is pretty great (as well as showers on the road!). I have the 800 amp/hr electrical system (which didn't work for 2 years, i had to pay my own dime to fix) and that now works great! The upper cabinets feel cheap but actually work great (drawers are terrible). My model 20k has a huge fridge. The propane heater is kinda a PITA to fill propane separately but for heat it works great and is quiet. The Promaster chassis was not great until I got the 3" lift kit and suspension upgrade which made a world of difference driving. I wish I had bought a Transit model, and not Thor. But I've made some peace with this Thor now that the big problems are fixed.
I'm with you on both OHVs great lift kit and coming to terms with all the Thor quality issues. It took about15 months but things are now manageable & the future improvements are not major.
You guys are blazing the trail for future van lifers. 👍🏼🙏❤️ I am always inspired and amazed at how you both keep smiles on your faces and keep making lemonade out of Mr. Lemon's leaky lemon juice . 🍋 🍋 🍋 I hope you win the lottery someday and get to have a fleet of vans for each type of adventure. You would be the most deserving winners ever. 🏆 🤑 In the interim, I will just keep telling anyone who will listen to steer clear of Thor vans. 😂😮😉 Thanks!
My Promaster does not have a window on the slider and minimal noise. When I asked about it during the build ,VanWorks said a glass could rattle and a chance it could ultimately fail. Good video, thanks
For the door not connecting to the sensors we have the same thing happening. I will say about the window, we were missing a clip. Check your clips. Where did you get your black box on the back and where do you keep your black stone? We have a 2023 Sequence 20k with the rear bath which we love. We don’t have a garage, but we have lots of storage and a big fridge which helps while we are out for several months at a time. Thanks for sharing.
Wow intermission like the theater (roller coaster with pop corn popping). Way cool / groovy. Don't be concerned I'll have more to say when I finish the video lol.
I have a promaster with no windows, I open the passenger door every time I'm closing the slider. there's a vaccuum created that makes it hard for the slider to shut....opening any other door helps a LOT
Just from viewing a lot of van videos...my expert opinion (did I already indicate that I'm not...I'm not. ) is that your issue is not really your batteries...it is your solar panel. Your battery size seems to be above average for vanlife, but I don't think anyone functions on a single 100watt panel. ...Unless it is someone only trying to charge a 12volt chest fridge and their phone. If you can't add solar on your roof, maybe you could get some portable foldout panels to add to your system. I'm guessing that you are not running out overnight...(Oh! I maybe you do with the air conditioner??) but that you are not able to replenish them during the day.
I’ve been in many Promasters , the sliding side door is always a big problem. You have to slam it so hard it blows all the windows out. I can’t always crack a window before closing the door. I want it automatic, like mini vans!!!!
If noise bothers you, don't ever buy a class A motor-home. Mine drives me crazy for the first couple hours on the road and then finally I wear down and ignore all the squeaks and rattles. Though I drove mine 28 hours straight on one trip and survived all the racket.
We are getting ready to pull the trigger on a class b van. Our question to you is- would you buy a Thor again? We are looking at Winnebago Travato, but they are pricey. So we looked at Tellaro (rear bath) and Jayco Swift. They are all very similar, minor variations we can live with. Do you have an opinion on any of our choices? We are good at repairing certain issues ourselves. Thanks for all your super informative (and entertaining) videos!
You guys are a hoot 🤣🤣🤣. Our Winne 59px has a generator in addition to the 2 arm batteries underneath like yours but no inverter so to use any of the 110 outlets the generator has to be on. So coffee is in a stove top pot. The poptop whistles at highway speeds but hasn’t leaked yet, it’s common. Do you have a custom mattress?
Check out a Boldt (discontinued), all the lithium power and nice full time beds. We are in an RV park right now and we don’t even bother to plug in. I guess you like the Ekko, but I thought you preferred the sprekko.
I have to say that when I saw the cabinet where the inverter is installed, I was dismayed. I know it is not usually visible, but it is just very sloppily done. There are also water lines that are in the same cabinet. This manufacturer doesn't take much pride in their product. That's the only conclusion I can draw. Enjoyed your video, though, and you are keeping your sense of humor. That is vital!
I didn’t really hear you guys complain specifically about the Promaster itself, it sounded more like the RV part of the van that gave you problems. How would you rate just the van itself? In one of your videos, you really liked the Coachmen Nova with the rear bath, and although it is no longer your favorite, how would you rank it overall? Thanks
WHAT???? You aren't full time? Seriously, love you guys! You are soooo gracious and grateful for your van. I have heard nothing but negative issues about Thor quality, all Indiana vans actually. Covid yes but I have not heard that about Pleasure Way from Canada but it may just mean I haven't heard it yet.
We are looking at a Thor scope 18m, it’s in our budget and we really like the floorplan( and it fits in our driveway). Between your reviews and other bad reviews on the Thor, are we nuts?!….I saw a video on a guy in the industry his advice for any van purchase was if you can’t buy a new one for a really good price, go for one a few years old that has had the bugs worked out. Appreciate any insights, thanks.
:) THANKS MUCH for sharing! I think the BEST is your Tire Mount / Rack and the New Grill! :) Take care and ENJOY, and maybe not a Thor next time? :) Cheers!
Hi Bob and Hillary 😁 Wow..that blackstone grill Is really cool ..Alfred and I would love to have one of those ..but we would have no where to put it ..we would have to put it in our garage the bathroom Lol 😆 Gteat video you guys👍🤗😊😁❤
Have you had any issues with the awning on Mr Lemon? I have the Thule awning on Mr Lemonade and the supports will not lock in place. I’ve talked to the Dealer and we just get the runaround from Thor.
No class B should have a toilet that isn’t removable or slides away, like Scarlet and Seth’s van. Just takes up too much space. No sink eight. Thanks for making me smile
Haha! Good guess…we would love one but the one Bob loves is two years out so probably not. But we do love a certain class b van…if we didn’t build one out.
Hi guy's, we love your videos. We know you have a HOA and limited driveway space. But have you ever considered a truck and slide-in camper? My wife and I had 2016without
We have enjoyed watching your videos for nearly six months now. I assume you are not full time RV'ers. How many nights per year year are you able to get and about?
Thanks Don. We are not full timers yet. I’m not sure in a year. But a good amount. We try and use it most weekends. And a few weeks a year straight. We don’t film every time though 😃
RE: Lithium Batteries; it is my understanding that you have to plug in and charge your van via a 30 AMP plug at least every 2 weeks in order for them to hold full charge... Have you been doing that?
Why would your van have a 3000 watt inverter with only 2x 100 amp lithium batteries? Everything I have read is that you need at least 4 batteries for that size inverter. 3 batteries for a 2000 watt inverter. Our Winnebago Travato has 2 x 100 amp and I changed in Battleborn batteries. I have been told I could squeeze in a 2k inverter but I would need to upgrade the cables. For AC use I hear suggested that you have 6 batteries. Until now I had no idea your bathroom was so small. How much longer until you change Vans again?
In Phoenix there is a van company called Papago vans. Our promaster van, built out at Papago, seems to run fine. Back in 2022 the cost for our working van system was rather less than a big company van build. Have you looked into such an option?? To you have any wisdom to share about such an option?? Good luck 👍
There are composting toilets that are removable. Also, you can remodel ghe bathroom to open up more space and just put a showrr curtain. It sounds like you are looking at a crosstrail ford transit.
I’ve been watching to find a class b to sell my AS Bambi 19ft for, being tall very interested in your opinion. You guys are convincing me to keep the Airstream trailer
Question: Does the 3 feet longer length make a huge difference in driving and maneuverability or about the same? The length that much more of an inconvenience in a parking spot? Thanks
For what you paid , you should loath anything. Those roof installations are not good, ptob cut corners due to demand. You said you had 2x 200ah batteries and 2x 100ah. The underneath pic showed 100ah so I am assuming 200ah total. That's not bad. The batteries aren't your only problem , no way you can charge more battery with 100 watts of solar. With your roof, can you squeeze another, will your system support it? I don't know what your electricity requirement is but you have a shower, so you have hot water? Is that propane based. The cheapest easiest way might be to shift your demands off to propane, like your new griddle? I would think all you can run off solar and 100 to 200 ah is led lights, some fans and your fridge. It's not cheap. how many amps is your alternator charger?
All this money what a shame these companies have the capability of doing a better job, but for the reach of more profit sacrifices what we want to love and spend our hard earned money on.
Fair question. We were newbies. Thought we knew what we wanted. Made a rash decision at an RV show. Plus there was hardly anything available during that time period. They say it takes 3 RVs to find the right one to fit your needs 😅 our goal is to help others make way better choices to fit their needs than we did.
These "things", hence your RV appear "Mickey Mouse". Ridiculous "money" to purchase one, something I would not do...majority of these Rv's are Manu. In Elkhart, In. the "armpit" of the Midwest!!!, there's a reason. Your skilled labor is located in Mi., Ill., Wisc., Minn., Ohio...... Indiana is "farmers". Low pay, poor skillsets, Many of them as a "Grand Design" are junk, basically they have a Ferrari paint scheme followed by a Ford product. NOBODY knows how to weld in Elkhart!, Good Luck and be safe!
I love the outtakes ... soooo funny!
Hahaha! Thanks Gary!
What we love in our Thor:
Layout, stove, heat system, its 21' size & the OHV lift kit we had installed.
What we dont like:
Having only 200 AH's of lithium, wiring birdsnests, poor insulation, non functioning balmar, popup leaks no spare tire and balsa quality "woodwork" w/the horrible faux woodgrain contact paper. Also, to truly stop the inverter from draining power, we need to turn it off from the unit below the futon/bed, which is inside a caged box. The only way to the unit is thru the rear doors and I often scrape my hand reaching thru the cage for the switch within.

we just got our 170 ext Sprinter too. Fairly easy to drive. The backup camera certainly helps! Love the room inside.
the noise! everything squeeks and rattles. Also in a Promaster. 10 days troublefree! yea!! #hotstreak! 🔥

Our Promaster is pretty quiet when we travel. No door noise.
Same here. Ours is a 2022 3500ext with factory glass in the slider. Our only issue is a noisy Maxx air fan cover.

Bob loved the Coachman Crosstrail on the Ford Chassis. Be sure to really check the chassis to make sure it has all the safety features.
Yes he did! But that’s not the one he’s dreaming about 😅
Ford Transit Build is 22 feet Max...gotta go to the Benz to get 24feet and that huge bsmnt storage!
Love you guys! I had a Winnebago Solis pocket snd just upgraded to a Storyteller Lt on the Ford Transit chassis. So far, I love it! Quiet and a quality you can feel.

13:21 our Sprinter slider door rattles too. I think it’s just slider doors in general.

My guess is Bob would go for either the Winnebago Elko or the Coachmen Crosstrail.
Overlander….at any cost.
Yeah, I saw that video I think it's the Coachman too. 50k less and the same size? Yeah, I'd go coachman over Ekko too.

Hi Bob and Hillary 😁
Wow..that blackstone grill
Is really cool ..Alfred and I would love to have one of those ..but we would have no where to put it ..we would have to put it in our garage the bathroom Lol 😆
Gteat video you guys👍🤗😊😁❤
You guys are hilarious! 😂
😂😂😂
Have you had any issues with the awning on Mr Lemon? I have the Thule awning on Mr Lemonade and the supports will not lock in place. I’ve talked to the Dealer and we just get the runaround from Thor.
No class B should have a toilet that isn’t removable or slides away, like Scarlet and Seth’s van. Just takes up too much space. No sink eight. Thanks for making me smile
You bought a Thor! need I say more😅🤣😂😅
I think you want a B+
Haha! Good guess…we would love one but the one Bob loves is two years out so probably not. But we do love a certain class b van…if we didn’t build one out.
Please share what that class b is! Double please
they have 25 pound cameras now at the gyms to work out with
I have 960ah in my van and don't know how you function on 200ah. Upgrade that ASAP!! :) And you're never too old for dirt bikes. :D
we have 810AH's in our van and 500 watts of solar panels and so far ( winter camping in 12F at night temps ) it's just barely adequate.
Yeah, A/Cs are terrible for heating. They usually use a LOT of power for heating. My diesel heater works great there. I only use the A/C for cooling.
Good luck 👍
Two words...
Embassy Dolphin!
👍👍👍
When you say van maintenance and the dealer, how has the Promaster chassis itself held up for you?
Ekko. If you were starting fresh...now, would you ho Class B or C?
There are composting toilets that are removable. Also, you can remodel ghe bathroom to open up more space and just put a showrr curtain.
It sounds like you are looking at a crosstrail ford transit.
I’ve been watching to find a class b to sell my AS Bambi 19ft for, being tall very interested in your opinion. You guys are convincing me to keep the Airstream trailer
I love you guys!
Awwww 😊
After all these things that have gone on with your Tellaro, are you looking to replace in the near future and what are you considering?
is that a Rover VAns box and ladder tire combo? I bought the box and will invest in the other stuff next year!
Mr. Lemon, your juice isn’t worth the squeeze, you guys have a LOT of patience dealing with this van.
🍋😂
You are NOT too old for a dirtbike!
Question: Does the 3 feet longer length make a huge difference in driving and maneuverability or about the same? The length that much more of an inconvenience in a parking spot? Thanks
YOUUUUU are ready for a small class C ..... Get the UNBELIEVABLE Entegra Odyssey 29V ... Time for a life of luxury like ours ...
What is your dream van? Do you like the Ekko?
Would you guys ever consider a small Class C if you were to replace Mr. Lemon?
Is the Winegard a tv antenna (satellite dish)?
I would not be camping where there is standing water. They have flash floods out there in the desert. Might just turn that van into a boat.
I most good Van campers with 3 200 watt panels for a total of 600 watts. Seems like you are way under powered to replenish batteries
The problem is it was made by Thor, would never buy an RV that was built in one of there factories>
Try a b+ . Yes,instead of the A.
Cross Trail?
One mistake is ill never buy a promaster 2 wheel camper
Way too tight in that big van, space isn’t maximized. Thanks for sharing your van
All this money what a shame these companies have the capability of doing a better job, but for the reach of more profit sacrifices what we want to love and spend our hard earned money on.
so are you going to sell it and buy a different one? no, I don't want to buy it.
LOL. Eventually we’d like to.
You bought a Thor, the company infamous for low quality, and you complain about problems?
Why did you even buy it? If the bathroom didn't fit your needs or any of the other issues you don't like?
Fair question. We were newbies. Thought we knew what we wanted. Made a rash decision at an RV show. Plus there was hardly anything available during that time period. They say it takes 3 RVs to find the right one to fit your needs 😅 our goal is to help others make way better choices to fit their needs than we did.
That roof rack is not the most useful.
