  • A Drive Video in NE Georgia from Dashcam.Last week at Helen, GA, we drove North on GA Highway 17, to get away from the tourist trap. This road is called the Unicoi Turnpike. Built In 1813 on Cherokee lands, this wagon road is “one of the first interstate highways in the Southeast.” The new wagon highways could cut time from six months to six days in those days. The Cherokees were to be paid $160 a year for 20 years. Turnpike tolls were: 12 ½ cents for a man and his horse, 6 ¼ cents for a horse being led, 2 cents per head of cattle, 1 cent per head of sheep, goats, or hogs. A coach, “chariot, or four-wheel pleasure carriage” was $1.25.Video starts at the hairpin corner at Andrew Creek Cove.
