Good amount of threadlocker! That odd bolt out would have bothered me; I could let it slide in a pinch, but I would have gone for a full set if I had the time. Plus, if they are lighter, there is a tiny performance gain to be had there.

Absolutely. I would get more done quickly if I actually had it in the garage too, but getting it there right now would be more hassle than it's worth. Besides, I'm used to working in the dirt. When it runs again, I can start working on it with pavement under me!
The fast forward parts are really satisfying to watch. I would have liked to seen some close up slow-mo on the drilling you did a couple videos back. This video was awesome. Keep up the great work.

Ah, I should have been a bit more clear. (Get it? More clear. Like 4K? 😂) By filming in 4K I could zoom in on the footage and have it still look good. My uploads would still be in 1080p, since my computer can barely handle 4K anyways!
Once I get this full of fluids, put in the new plugs, and get some fresh premium in it, I bet it's going to be a riot. Just needs a lot of rust work so it doesn't literally fall apart. :D
I have only gotten to drive it a small amount, though it is finally in the garage for strut tower repair. Overall it is a bit more on/off than a lot of stock clutches I have driven, but it seems great. No noise or issues I have felt. Won't be able to tell how it holds power for a while though. Hell yeah 7 bolt crank walk! My advise is pull it and put the 6 bolt in. If you plan on making serious power. My experience 7 bolt cranks like to walk without adding any power

I noticed I said it wrong in the video too. Originally was going to use a C-clamp, didn't have nearly enough force. Had to switch to the big 'ol bench vice. Thanks!
yeah i went thru the same shit with my wife's mini. changing the supercharger pulley . had to put it in the oven to 400 , use welding gloves and pc duster upside down to freeze the crank pin or pulley bolt pending region your from . but the stock pulley was good for 6lbs, the 69mm pulley was good for 12 ish.
Some people say one, some say the other. The people I trust most would remove just the transmission rather than the entire engine. Depends on the resources you have available as well. With a lift and a transmission stand or rolling cart then just transmission is definitely easier. If you have a cherry picker you can kind of do either or. Jafromobile just does it with the car on jack stands and drops the trans out the bottom like me. If you have a cement floor, decent jack, and stands, I say try doing just trans.
I actually got a good deal on these parts. Paid less than for just stock replacement. ARP would have been overkill for the power I'm going for any time soon. Plus ARP is pricey and the OEM bolts are plenty strong. I still hear you though.
My grandfather has done the same with a Kenworth k100 flywheel,Along with replacing ring gear. Next time place the flywheel in the over at 450° for 15-20 minutes and get dry ice. Place your dowels in with the dry ice and leave them in until you go to put them in one at a time. believe you get like .006 of clearance between the dowel and the flywheel doing that. They literally just fall right in the hole.
Yeah for sure. As you saw, I did heat it and I did use the freezer. The third one was the easiest by far. Also knowing now I didn't need to drive them in so far definitely would have made it easier.
There are actual tools for removing and installing dowel pins. Any machine shop could have done that for you on the cheap. Especially one that grinds flywheels.
No machine shops near me, especially none that I would trust, and none that would have wanted to bother that I know of. I live in the middle of nowhere. Installing dowel pins with a vice or even a hammer is perfectly normal and a machine shop is totally unnecessary. Were I to do it again, I would just leave the pins in the freezer longer, heat the flywheel more, and probably just use wood and a large hammer, but check the depth, because I drove them in further than necessary. Still worked fine though.
@@ihatejavier Generally no, that's not normal, unless there was an issue with your old clutch. How stiff the pedal feels depends on multiple factors. Primarily the spring strength of the pressure plate springs and the leverage point. Also how well lubricated everything is and if there are any hydraulic issues. What clutch did you have and what clutch did you put in?
@@802Garage the clutch that got put in is a act hd pressure plate with a 6 puck sprung disc clutch and the old one is also a 6 puck but I’m unsure of the brand
@@ihatejavier If the old one was a no name brand, that would likely explain why it was stiffer. The cheaper brands will rely more on heavy springs than having a good friction compound so the clutches will feel very stiff. ACT is more reputable and will have more engineering into their friction material and leverage points for example. As long as the clutch is functioning properly I wouldn't worry.
Hey Man nice job and good work on your car. can't wait to see it run. im working with my Mitsubishi Eclipse 1995 it got a Chrysler motor 2.0 automatic, i bought it for $600.00 bucks, and it's not running so yeah my brother is helping me work on it, the car don't want to start so our guess is problem with the computer.
Thanks a lot! I do hear the computers love to go bad on those cars. Be careful getting a replacement as they can be pretty year to year specific. Also be sure to check basic things like crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, as well as fuel pressure and coil pack. Hope yours is less rusty than mine!

Just priced them. Would be about an extra $25 and I can at least replace them with the transmission installed. Since they weren't leaking when I took the trans out, I'm going to skip it for now. We'll see if it bites me!
Bench-Vice on the floor lol, this kinda reminds me of someones old build thread where they said something to the effect of "only real men use a bench vise on the floor lol" I also have not bolted mine to a bench yet, for a plethora of reasons, mainly because it takes up counter space. Blue thread locker is a good idea on the flywheel bolts some guys like using red here, but if you plan to tear it down in the future blue is better suited to the task, also not meant to belittle the effort or anything, but just something id like to share, you want to spread the thread locker around the tip of the bolt with an index finger, so it goes deep into the bolt threads and remove any excess I like to do this so that the thread locker does not seep out of the threads as it is tightened down, and there is more even coverage deep in the bolt threads, I'm sure you will be alright. Those 19mm headed flywheel bolts are from an early "90-"92 1G dsm 6 bolt motor, now it makes sense why they went to the hardware store and grabbed an extra bolt lol, they only had 6 oem bolts from an early 6 bolt motor, the 7 bolt dsm flywheel bolts are 17mm headed, and they are approximately 1mm shorter then 6 bolt manual flywheel bolts.

Yeah I tend to stay away from red Loc-Tite unless it is absolutely necessary. Fought a crank pulley bolt for hours once because of it. Interesting note on the thread locker. I had never heard that before. I always heard to use a drop and let it spread itself out when threaded in. That would make sense they used 1G bolts and only had 6 of them... Oh yeah exactly what you said. That's why they grabbed an extra. I think this car may have had a 6 bolt swapped in before this engine, but it blew. Would make sense considering some of what the previous owner told me. Damn, more carcheology!
Yeah keep at it man I love working on these older mitsu motors I'm still learning stuff as well, but when I see stuff I can help with I tend to share what I know/read or learned etc, I love these cars tho I almost want to get an auto awd 2g one is for sale right now it's a roller $200 near me but I got like 5 project mitsu cars already lol otherwise I'd jump on it restore it and flip it lol.

I'm building 2 3G CSMs which are bascailly the Dodge or plymouth Colt/ Eagle Summit/ Mitsu MIrage triplets from "89-"92, I already swapped my white mirage to 4g63T , but I plan to keep that manual trans and maybe go awd soon, just to do something different I plan to do auto awd on my red "91 Dodge colt, and I might be able to use the auto 2g dsm rear end, I might just use a 3000gt auto rear end, or just use the awd 1g dsm rear but swap an auto rear diff to keep gearing right, or just find a rare 1g dsm auto awd rear lol, but yeah I do love manual trans it's more fun using a clutch and manage all of that, but just to try something outside my comfort zone go auto trans lol.
Careful using that torque wrench i use the same one at work and when using it were ure grabbin it will spin under high torque load even when "locked" in.i would just check where u set ure specs more frequently thats all haha

Aw that warms my heart! Most important thing is to get one with as little rust as possible. Mechanicals are much easier to fix. Don't get one with strut towers like mine. :P
I have a couple guys selling ones in decent shape! Although I will get hate, I really want to make it like Paul Walkers! I really like Paul and want to honor him! On the other hand I want to make a silver or yellow one with the stock bumpers and just make it nice!
I would looove to see a banana GSX. It's fine to pay tribute. Maybe do it your own way. Do a different color, but rock some od the decals or something. Either way, that's awesome!
Unfortunately have not been able to put a lot of miles on it, but it felt great and worked well. No noise and not a super hard pedal. I have little doubt it would hold up well at slightly above stock power levels.

@@cjdavis247 I'd say the hardest part is literally just dropping and lifting the transmission. If you are working on a cement floor with good jack stands and especially if you have a transmission jack it's definitely pretty basic. If your car is FWD it makes it much easier too. Just follow the torque specs and do not forget the crank walk bolt. I go over that in another video if you haven't seen it. Credit to Jafromobile as well.
Hahaha, I don't actually think you got them in Australia. The Eclipse was a DSM, or Diamond Star Motors, car. Joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler. Basically it was a two door car powered by either a small Chrysler engine or the 4G63/4G64 from Mitsubishi. Two door, FWD or AWD, big hatchback. Only the first two generations of the Eclipse are DSM cars. After that it turned into Mitsubishi only, I believe. Nobody really likes the 3G though. The 1G and 2G have a massive cult following. Oh! The green car Brian Spilner starts out with in the original The Fast & The Furious is a Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX! Well, at least that's what they say, I believe they used a cheaper spec car and just called it that. You can also check out my intro vid on the car! I believe I put a link to it in the info cards. Sorry if this was more of a rant than you were expecting.

802 Garage Yes FTOs are here a plenty Lovely looking car but yes FWD so they are not that popular. Came out with 1.8 four or 2 litre V6, but their looks almost made up for it 👍

Tell me about it! Really frustrating. Even the new clutch cover bolts I ordered were different than the originals. 1mm smaller I believe. I love Subaru for their bolts. Everything is a 10, 12, 14, 17, or 19. Makes it sooo easy. :D

learning a standard is really easy, just let that clutch out real slow until you feel the car start to lurch forward then start giving it some gas, continue letting out the clutch and off you go. Taking off is the hardest part once you are moving shifting is a snap and also don't forget to push in the clutch and the brake when you want to come to a complete stop
I mean tbh I don't really see the advantage of a manual other than a slightly lower weight (manual trans is usually about 80 pounds lower than it's auto variant). And I can almost guarantee the computer is gonna shift faster than I am, haha
A stick is a whole lot more fun and you have more control over the car, but yeah, modern automatics (depending on the car) are faster in a straight line.

Mr Adventures The Exedy unit is a quality part. Physics says it technically will improve the speed of RPM increase. The amount is always in question.

someone needs to do a video on the mitsubishi eclipse transmissions 1995-99 because the transmissions go out quite often...
Jafromobile is your best bet. My next DSM video will be covering the transmission more, but that's on hold for a few days due to a broken part.

The factory spec is 94-101 ft lbs. (127-137 Nm.)

So after installing a new clutch and flywheel. is it normal for the clutch pedal to feel softer than it did with the old clutch?
I’m assuming maybe over time it will break in and get stiffer?
@@ihatejavier Generally no, that's not normal, unless there was an issue with your old clutch. How stiff the pedal feels depends on multiple factors. Primarily the spring strength of the pressure plate springs and the leverage point. Also how well lubricated everything is and if there are any hydraulic issues. What clutch did you have and what clutch did you put in?
@@802Garage the clutch that got put in is a act hd pressure plate with a 6 puck sprung disc clutch and the old one is also a 6 puck but I’m unsure of the brand
@@ihatejavier If the old one was a no name brand, that would likely explain why it was stiffer. The cheaper brands will rely more on heavy springs than having a good friction compound so the clutches will feel very stiff. ACT is more reputable and will have more engineering into their friction material and leverage points for example. As long as the clutch is functioning properly I wouldn't worry.

Hey Man nice job and good work on your car. can't wait to see it run. im working with my Mitsubishi Eclipse 1995 it got a Chrysler motor 2.0 automatic, i bought it for $600.00 bucks, and it's not running so yeah my brother is helping me work on it, the car don't want to start so our guess is problem with the computer.

I do hear the computers love to go bad on those cars. Be careful getting a replacement as they can be pretty year to year specific.
Also be sure to check basic things like crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, as well as fuel pressure and coil pack.

replace your axle seals on trans they maybe old and need it anyway
I wasn't planning to, but since I have to order some OEM parts now anyways, I'll price them out.
Just priced them. Would be about an extra $25 and I can at least replace them with the transmission installed. Since they weren't leaking when I took the trans out, I'm going to skip it for now. We'll see if it bites me!

That's basically the next step. Once it runs and I can move it out of this space, I'll be taking it in the garage to do some surgery.
Bench-Vice on the floor lol, this kinda reminds me of someones old build thread where they said something to the effect of "only real men use a bench vise on the floor lol" I also have not bolted mine to a bench yet, for a plethora of reasons, mainly because it takes up counter space. Blue thread locker is a good idea on the flywheel bolts some guys like using red here, but if you plan to tear it down in the future blue is better suited to the task, also not meant to belittle the effort or anything, but just something id like to share, you want to spread the thread locker around the tip of the bolt with an index finger, so it goes deep into the bolt threads and remove any excess I like to do this so that the thread locker does not seep out of the threads as it is tightened down, and there is more even coverage deep in the bolt threads, I'm sure you will be alright.
Those 19mm headed flywheel bolts are from an early "90-"92 1G dsm 6 bolt motor, now it makes sense why they went to the hardware store and grabbed an extra bolt lol, they only had 6 oem bolts from an early 6 bolt motor, the 7 bolt dsm flywheel bolts are 17mm headed, and they are approximately 1mm shorter then 6 bolt manual flywheel bolts.

Yeah I tend to stay away from red Loc-Tite unless it is absolutely necessary. Fought a crank pulley bolt for hours once because of it.
Interesting note on the thread locker. I had never heard that before. I always heard to use a drop and let it spread itself out when threaded in.
That would make sense they used 1G bolts and only had 6 of them... Oh yeah exactly what you said. That's why they grabbed an extra.
I think this car may have had a 6 bolt swapped in before this engine, but it blew. Would make sense considering some of what the previous owner told me.

Yeah keep at it man I love working on these older mitsu motors I'm still learning stuff as well, but when I see stuff I can help with I tend to share what I know/read or learned etc, I love these cars tho I almost want to get an auto awd 2g one is for sale right now it's a roller $200 near me but I got like 5 project mitsu cars already lol otherwise I'd jump on it restore it and flip it lol.

I'm building 2 3G CSMs which are bascailly the Dodge or plymouth Colt/ Eagle Summit/ Mitsu MIrage triplets from "89-"92, I already swapped my white mirage to 4g63T , but I plan to keep that manual trans and maybe go awd soon, just to do something different I plan to do auto awd on my red "91 Dodge colt, and I might be able to use the auto 2g dsm rear end, I might just use a 3000gt auto rear end, or just use the awd 1g dsm rear but swap an auto rear diff to keep gearing right, or just find a rare 1g dsm auto awd rear lol, but yeah I do love manual trans it's more fun using a clutch and manage all of that, but just to try something outside my comfort zone go auto trans lol.
or I could always just rebuild the auto 2g and sell it for profit to fund my 3g CSM adventures.

Careful using that torque wrench i use the same one at work and when using it were ure grabbin it will spin under high torque load even when "locked" in.i would just check where u set ure specs more frequently thats all haha

how has the clutch held up?
Unfortunately have not been able to put a lot of miles on it, but it felt great and worked well. No noise and not a super hard pedal. I have little doubt it would hold up well at slightly above stock power levels.

@@cjdavis247 I'd say the hardest part is literally just dropping and lifting the transmission. If you are working on a cement floor with good jack stands and especially if you have a transmission jack it's definitely pretty basic. If your car is FWD it makes it much easier too. Just follow the torque specs and do not forget the crank walk bolt. I go over that in another video if you haven't seen it. Credit to Jafromobile as well.

OK Australian here......what is an eclipse...... I know its a Mitzi but don't think they are called the same here
Hahaha, I don't actually think you got them in Australia. The Eclipse was a DSM, or Diamond Star Motors, car. Joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler. Basically it was a two door car powered by either a small Chrysler engine or the 4G63/4G64 from Mitsubishi. Two door, FWD or AWD, big hatchback. Only the first two generations of the Eclipse are DSM cars. After that it turned into Mitsubishi only, I believe. Nobody really likes the 3G though. The 1G and 2G have a massive cult following.
Oh! The green car Brian Spilner starts out with in the original The Fast & The Furious is a Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX! Well, at least that's what they say, I believe they used a cheaper spec car and just called it that. You can also check out my intro vid on the car! I believe I put a link to it in the info cards.

learning a standard is really easy, just let that clutch out real slow until you feel the car start to lurch forward then start giving it some gas, continue letting out the clutch and off you go. Taking off is the hardest part once you are moving shifting is a snap and also don't forget to push in the clutch and the brake when you want to come to a complete stop
I mean tbh I don't really see the advantage of a manual other than a slightly lower weight (manual trans is usually about 80 pounds lower than it's auto variant). And I can almost guarantee the computer is gonna shift faster than I am, haha
A stick is a whole lot more fun and you have more control over the car, but yeah, modern automatics (depending on the car) are faster in a straight line.
