While a good advice for the dots, I would recommend that people try different angles of moving the pen to achieve a straight line. I personally find that pulling my arm back (reverse of what you did) works better for me. Scott Robertson moves his pen away from him at a 45 degree angle, from left to right. Everyone is different. Oh, and don't move your hand or wrist, only arm/shoulder. And people shouldn't worry about only making straight lines at one angle, you can always rotate your page so you can quickly master a straight line without having to train the arm in every possible angle.
It works! I actually draw very straight lines! I can’t believe what a difference, blows my mind! I used to follow the line and they were horrible:)) amazing 🤩 thanks for the tip and video !!
The fundamental method that is being recommended is a good one, concentrating on the destination point is a good way to learn to draw a straight line, but as others have noted, the direction that you move your pen should be comfortable to you, move the paper or yourself accordingly to align your best stroke with the intended line direction. Pulling down usually works best or across according to your dominant hand. Practice practice practice.......😀
Omg your video is a life saver I haven’t sketched in years I’m always in CAD for my job and lost my touch🤦🏾♀️ new subbie here for all your videos as refreshers.
I’m a design student that comes from an art background of drawing tons of organic shapes-people, animals, trees, landscapes-and I always struggled so hard with the technical drawings because my lines always default to curves. I would use digital art in my big projects so I had the ruler and line thickness tools and could compensate for my shoddy linework with tons of rendering, but during classes where we did architectural pencil drawings I always felt like I was the worst one in the room. I’m doing industrial design in uni next year so hopefully I won’t be suffering like I would in interior or architectural design, but I still definitely need to improve my straight lines if I want to have clean, crisp drawings.
Coming from a Painter that used to be like u too, I wld suggest trying to relax and not worry about the small part of the line but the bigger picture and the confidence of just knowing u have done this a million times. I used to pretend like I was showing someone how to do it and I wld get this all or nothing kinda attitude. Def like pulling better and if u use bigger parts of your body if possible. With practice anyone can if I can lol!
Wow, the tip on looking at the target point worked right away. I never drawn a straight line before, but now it became straight as with a ruler. Great tip!. This will go into my daily practise from now.
I draw a lot and I still can’t draw straight lines. I looked at several different videos, and I realized I already draw straight. But, thanks for the great video! :D
I like to pull my pencil if possible from L to R and I always look behind the pencil after I start. But I'm a House Painter that used to suck at drawing but now I'm not too bad just cause of Painting straight lines...
Thank you so fucking much! I feel so vindicated. This is way better and easier than ghosting lines which a number of art channels seem to insist on. Its much more natural for me do this and my lines are smoother too. I have way to go, but this will help heaps.
I never expected how straight lines would be graded in architecture school. I'm at my lowest skill right now 'cause my hands are shaky no matter what I do TT.
+Themodmin Sir, thank you very much for the valuable video. Do you recommend any specific way to hold the pen? Also, should my hand to be in contact with the paper when I draw? I heard a lot of people talking about drawing straight lines from shoulder not from elbow nor twist, but honestly, whatever is the way, it is hard... Really appreciate your support.
Learn before you teach sir. You start out with your hand resting on the paper drawing with your wrist!!! Ugh. when you draw the horizontal line your hand is floating above the paper and the line is much straighter!!!!!
I am not an Architect student I am in highschool I just want to know how to draw straight lines so I can make my maths homework look at least half-decent

If you did from up to down, it would have been easier
Great video mate
Thank you for the video! What about everyone telling that to draw the straight line you need to draw from shoulder and not from the wrist?
thank you for teaching this.
I think we have a different understanding of "straight line" definition 😬 but looking at end point definitely helps
😂 exactly
Thank you,,
Good advice,,,,,

wow ..., so cool! - I am no architect, but MY straight freehand lines are actually a lot cleaner and not wobly at all.
It's a good explanation.
This kind of thing looks stupid but really helps a lot to improve your drawings. thanks for the video.
It works! Thank you! :)
Can you also show us how to draw a circle?
I like to pull my pencil if possible from L to R and I always look behind the pencil after I start. But I'm a House Painter that used to suck at drawing but now I'm not too bad just cause of Painting straight lines...

those are some pretty bad lines. You should connect from dot to dot
If you dont know how to do straight lines...does that mean you have an homosexual stroke?
Eyyyy
Who eles is here when they know how to draw a straight line
Learn before you teach sir. You start out with your hand resting on the paper drawing with your wrist!!! Ugh. when you draw the horizontal line your hand is floating above the paper and the line is much straighter!!!!!
lol ez
Bro are you serious? Your lines are awful
he is mediocre artist bro, he doesnt even use his shoulder to draw straight lines he just like writing thats why the lines is wobbly
Because he sounds so unsure, It sounds like he doesn't know what he is doing
lol, most beginners who have zero technique can draw a straighter line.
I am not an Architect student I am in highschool I just want to know how to draw straight lines so I can make my maths homework look at least half-decent
