Yuffie is one thing, but at least there's a chance of you finding her encounter randomly as you progress. Vincent, on the other hand, actively requires you to go out of your way to find him.

    • @njalsand133
      @njalsand133 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yet he is surprisingly easy to stumble across and the manual did mention them. So you know they exist.

    • @Astraeus..
      @Astraeus.. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@njalsand133 The manual only lists him as a character, IIRC it doesn't tell you anything about how or when to find him. As for that, there's an actual bit of side-quest and a boss-fight involved, so you do have to put in a bit of work to actually get him.
Yuffie, by comparison, is literally a random encounter on the overworld. Significantly easier to find by accident.

I remember on my first playthrough of Dragon Age: Origins I somehow completely missed one of them. After I finished the game I was still feeling all pumped about it and decided to read a few story guides and walkthroughs to see all the alternate paths I could've taken and I kept seeing references to someone called "Leliana" and I was confused as hell, only to look it up and find out that she's a major party member who you can recruit early on in one of the first villages, but only if you enter the tavern, on my first playthrough I explored the town, found Sten, went inside nearly every building but by complete chance didn't think to enter the tavern, and I completely missed her, having a largely different experience as a result

Steamworks and Magick Obscura has a dog that is only recruitable once. In Ashbury a gnome is kicking the dog to death and you must find them and convince the gnome to stop. The dog is legitimately such an amazing character that long time players consider it borderline cheating to recruit him. Once the Ashbury map loads you have limited time to save the dog.

I first thought of Gogo when I saw the title, because that's kind of an obscure method, but none of those really fit the list as presented. Shadow's not missable, he's forced into your party at least once (can't remember if you can skip him every time prior to floating continent or there's another time.) It's just that you can lose him permanently after that point.
The rest... you don't so much "miss" them as just... don't get them. There's never a point, short of literally right at the final boss, where you no longer have the opportunity to recruit them.

Suikoden games are quite infamous for having a TON of recruitable characters, which are required for the good/best ending. I believe Suikoden 5 had 108 people to recruit, collectively called the Stars of Destiny. Missing even one can cause other characters to die, among other outcomes. And the large majority are missable because you have to do side quests, side with certain people, make certain dialogue choices, or have specific items/people with you to recruit them

2003's Gladius. Basically, you control a Gladiator school set in a Magical Fantasy-type world that has Nordic-like Nordag, next to Rome-like Imperia, next to West Asia-like Windward Stepps, and below them is Ancient Egypt-like Southern Expanse. Main point of the game is to go around, defeat local gladiator teams, become Champions of each town, then Region, then the World, and (I never did this part - too scared to do so) save the world from the Dark God.
Now, each town had a pool of recruit-able gladiators, who, if hired, would join your school and participate in future battles. Initially, you start with 8 slots (including your two starting characters) but eventually, you can recruit up to 20 Gladiators (including your 4 Permanent Characters). Thing is, minus the Unique Characters, some of which are hybrids of other gladiator types (Ursula being a Barbarian/Legionnaire mix, Valens being a modified Legionnaire, Urlan being a modified Barbarian, and Eiji being an Amazon/Archer mix - then there's Ludo, a modified Legionnaire and Gwazi, a modified Secutor, but they don't count much - Ludo's only in Valen's storyline (so, he might be seen as Missable), and both turn traitor before the 4th region's Championship anyways), there's 29 possible gladiator types (and that's not counting non-recruit-able sorts). But, since most could be, relatively, easily recruited, here's the extremely tricky ones, and you will want a slot for some of them.
    1. Minotaur - must participate in the Historian's League battle, and win. However, save before the battle, as the odds are 50/50, with the possibility of getting a more common satyr (or cyclopes on the second attempt) instead. (A Must) (Chapter 1 if Valens, Chapter 2 if Usurla, or Chapter 5 if failed on prior attempts)
2+3. Scarabs & Scorpions. Defeat the Insect Ze league in Qaa Rah, and these oversized bugs start showing up in the recruitment office there. (Don't need to pick them up, but they are kind of cool.) (Chapter 4)
    4. Summoner. After Gwazi's Treachery, head to Akar An and you can recruit this guy. Capable of summoning minions (Skeletons, Elemental beings, and Insects), this guy can sit back, and watch the opposition die to his summoned creatures - useful in Wilderness Battles where deaths are for keeps, unlike most arena battles. (A Must.) (Chapter 4)
(The next 3 can be recruited starting in Chapter 1 if Usula, or Chapter 2 if Valens)
    5. Undead Summoner. Simply beat the Dead of the Night series league in Mordare, and this guy will be in the recruitment office asking for you. Summons Skeleton minions to do the heavy lifting - just the thing for risky Wilderness Battles. (A must - as he believes serving the main character will free him of his curse.)
    6. Undead Legionnaire. Help save the Mordare shopkeeper's "friend", a Galdr witch named Sigi, and, at least, attempt the Dead of the Night battles. Win or loose, see the shopkeeper afterwards - he'll say that a hill that he and his friend like to spend time at has become infested with the undead. Go to the hill at night, and you'll be attacked by skeleton-summoning-tombstones. Destroy them, and get a Talisman of Unlife. Talk to the storekeeper again. After this, go to a tombstone at night, and so long as you don't have one in your party, you can get an Undead Legionnaire for free. (Useful, especially in Early Game, when funds are low, as you can, basically, recruit - remove gear - kick - recruit - remove gear - kick - recruit - remove gear - kick - and then sell the spare equipment for cash or equip other Medium Gladiators) Point of fact - I've managed to get 3 in my party at once, by going to a tombstone in one area, recruiting the fella there, go to another area (one can freely move between the regions in Chapter 5), kick prior skeleton, pick the local up, re-recruit prior skeleton from recruitment office, then go to next region, repeat the trick, and now there's 3 skeletons - tried to get 4 (one from each region), doesn't seem to work.
    7. Yeti. Clear the Trial of the Elders in Vargen, and one of these guys will be in the recruitment office. Only thing is, these guys are Heavy, and the final battle pits one against Ursula (or Valens), who is a Medium - and Heavy Gladiators do extra damage to Medium types. (If playing as Usula, a Must, as there's no real chances to recruit Heavy gladiators in Nordag. Valens could take his chances - he has access to better Heavy Gladiators - but there's only one that is recruit-able, so might as well bring him along.)
Had a lot of fun playing this game.

One party member i didn't even KNOW you could obtain, was Apollonius from Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force...
Getting him isn't hard, the hard part is figuring out HOW to get him! The simple answer is that when you fight him the second time after the timejump, when Fang knows he has a sister, your characters need to be level 40+ to be "strong" enough in his mind to be worthy of accompanying him, and after you beat him (where he would die if you aren't level 40), you get a quest to acquire a potion that can save him, and he joins your side for the rest of the game...
This one is special to me, as it's not often a game rewards you with a secret partymember just for overleveling, as you will likely only be around level 30 or so when the fight occures!

Here's more for Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.
There are 3 different story paths (lawful/neutral/chaotic) that provide a lot of playable characters that you wouldn't even know without guides. For example:
a beastmaster that can be recruited near the end of the game by bringing his health down to minimum and not killing his 2 gryphons throughout the multiple encounters with him
A dame knight that requires saving, a lot of chance encounters and choosing the right choices
A quadruplet witch. I remember you needing to make it rain and hope for an encounter on a specific map
Maybe the princess and best friend can count as well
A lot of dialogue recruitable units like the dragoon in that castle
I think Lanslot is recruitable too somehow

it's also VERY different from how "reputation" worked in the FIRST Ogre Battle!
if i remember, in the original, you needed to liberate towns with high-alignment parties to get your reputation to go up...
BUT in OG64, some towns are themselves LOW alignment, so you need to capture THEM with low-alignment parties to get a positive "chaos frame" rating!

Not exactly fitting into the category, but Shadow from Final Fantasy VI kinda counts...three times.
First, and far less prone to being missed, after the party reunites and the see Terra's stronger half, the party can find Shadow, who had previously left the party, sitting in a pub. He charges 3000 gil to join again...for a short time.
Second, and a bit more likely to be missed if the player is freaking out at a critical moment, is the incident on the Floating Continent, wherein lied the Warring Triad, the three gods of magic who had aligned themselves in an eternal Mexican standoff, such that each was hitting the other two with powerful magics, turning all three into statues. Finding them, Kefka killed the Emperor and started pushing the Triad out of alignment, so that their power would run wild, destroying the world as everyone knew it, and allowing Kefka to absorb the power to become the new God of Magic. Upon doing so, Shadow appeared again and attempted to push the Triad back into alignment before the aforementioned cataclysm and deification could take place. One massive surge of energy later, and the continent, which as the name implies, if floating high up in the air, begins to crumble and fall. What's the party do? Flee for their lives, taking out a boss along the way (still in the time limit, btw). Finally reaching their ship, the game does nicely ask if you want to wait for Shadow. At any point, the party can leave, and who wouldn't blame you? The ship is falling apart, the world is falling into ruin, and there's the continuous ticking of a clock counting down until game over. Wait until the last few seconds however, and Shadow does finally show up, and everyone can leave together. Only to be promptly separated as their ship is destroyed and a year-long time skip takes place until Celes wakes up from a coma.
Finally, as the player is working on rebuilding the scattered party in World of Ruin, they can recruit Shadow one final time (if they, of course, didn't leave him to die on the collapsing Floating Continent). First, they must go to the Veldt, a wide expanse of plain in which the party can find creatures from all over the world (and Gau). Entering the Cave on the Veldt, they find Shadow's dog, who brings them to Shadow. A boss fight ensues, after which the party takes Shadow to their new ship. He then leaves. If, in the Cave, you found what Shadow was looking for, the katana Ichigeki, you can then take it to the Dragon's Neck Coliseum and bet it, which will prompt a fight with Shadow. Here, you can convince him to join the fight against Kefka, which he will agree to. All this just to watch him wait for the sweet release of death in the game's final moments as Kefka's tower collapses around him.
