  • This short film is about sailing the Melonseed Skiff. Grenville had her last sailing adventure of the 2021 season on November 5th. Fine conditions out on The Lake of Two Mountains near Hudson, Quebec, Canada included Westerly winds 8-14 knots, a clear sky and temperature at 45 degrees F (7 C).
The video was captured using a GoPro Hero 4 Black camera as well as an iPhone 8. The GoPro was fitted with a Sennheiser MKE 2 Elements microphone.

That is a spectacular sail to end the season and also a beautiful soundtrack. Thank-you for sharing. Sarah

A fine day indeed! Plenty of wind to make it interesting yet not too much which made handling the boat and the camera manageable! Glad you liked it … thanks!

John, thanks for another evocative film, complete with the low light (magnificent!) of a crisp autumn afternoon, and the bittersweet sense of the ending season. Presented beautifully with haunting music, Grenville's graceful late-autumn dance will please my eyes and soul over the winter months. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work! Three Cheers!......RJR

Excellent! Beautiful autumn colors John. Nice to see you enjoying it to the fullest. How do you keep your lens spray free?

Mostly I just wipe the camera case lens now and again and hope the lens stays clear long enough to get a good clip. Alternatively, when the spray is heavy, I purposely keep the camera going and the continuous water spray prevents droplets from staying on the lens! The case lens seems to shed films of water, usually aided by the wind.

Such a beautiful boat. I want one but don't have the space to store one.

Indeed … Roger Crawford’s Melonseed Skiff is a floating work of art that’s as much fun to sail as it is to simply admire her lines! Lots of these boats live outdoors on their trailers. A marina or sailing club can easily accommodate a Melonseed on its trailer! ⛵️😀

Another great video. Thank you for sharing. Your videos got me interested in the Melonseed Skiff. I'm considering either a Crawford or Brush Creek build. It would be great to see videos that show how to rig the sail, launch from a trailer, etc. But excellent videos nonetheless.

Thanks for watching. A launch and rigging tutorial is a good idea! Here’s a little video that shows some of the steps … th-cam.com/video/ynAGhipreXk/w-d-xo.html
Check out Roger Crawford’s website for an excellent description of sail rigging. It’s really simple and only takes a few minutes … too easy!

@@GrenvilleMelonseedSkiff496 I acquired a 2013 Melonseed a few weeks ago that Roger featured on his brokerage site. Your videos are enjoyable and instructional. I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching and look forward to new material in the Spring 2022. I visit Crawford Boat Building regularly and have also learned a lot from the information shared in the Melonseeds/Melonheads group chat site. Thank you again for your reply and generosity. It would be an honor to meet you.

@@eldeRobe Thanks for your kind comments and well done on the new boat. I’m sure it will give you much pleasure over the years. It would be a pleasure to meet and sail with you … perhaps at a regatta in Massachusetts some time. Hold Fast!

I am enjoying your videos as I am waiting for my boat to be finished. It looks like it can be a wet ride which is not that critical as my water is pretty warm and the weather is pretty good for getting wet. I notice the suit your are wearing in several of your videos is that just some sort of waterproof suit or an actual dry suit like you would wear in a kayak in colder waters.

I’m wearing a dry suit made by Kokatat. It has a separate top and bottom with a zipper to join the halves at the waist. Gore Tex material … works great.

Thanks for the info John. I just sold my Montgomery 17 so it just going to be my Scamp and the Melonseed. I plan to do some sailing away from Southern California so will probably get some clothes to cover sailing in colder water.
