- New 2026 Volvo ES90 - A High-Tech and Stylish Electric Sedan Worth Considering!
The 2026 Volvo ES90 is set to redefine the luxury electric sedan market. As Volvo moves toward full electrification over the coming decade, the ES90 represents an important step in that transformation. This mid-size electric sedan will stand alongside the gasoline-powered S90 for a few years as Volvo assesses whether traditional sedan buyers are ready to transition to electric power.
While many automakers are shifting their focus to sport utility vehicles and trucks, Volvo continues to invest in premium sedans. The ES90 will be built on the same advanced platform as the larger EX90 electric sport utility vehicle, which also serves as the foundation for the high-performance Polestar 3. This means the ES90 is likely to share a similar 111 kilowatt-hour battery pack, delivering an estimated driving range of 300 miles or more on a full charge.
Volvo has not yet revealed specific powertrain details, but the EX90 sport utility vehicle provides some useful insights. That model offers dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations with outputs of 402 and 510 horsepower. The ES90 will certainly feature an all-wheel-drive variant, but Volvo could also introduce a rear-wheel-drive version with a single motor to provide a lower-cost option for buyers.
Competing in the luxury electric sedan market will not be easy. The ES90 will go up against well-established rivals, including the BMW i5, Genesis Electrified G80, Lucid Air, Mercedes-Benz EQE, and Tesla Model S. A new player, the Afeela 1, developed by Sony and Honda, is also expected to enter the segment in 2026. Each of these vehicles brings its own strengths, from performance to cutting-edge technology, making competition fierce.
