- In this video, I share seven rums that make for fantastic Rum Old Fashioneds. If you've only ever had old fashioneds made from bourbon and whiskey, then you are missing out an on whole world of delicious old fashioneds. Rum has an incredibly diverse range of flavors that can lead to some truly unique old fashioned.

Splitting the base with a half ounce of over proof helps a lot of rum OFs. Eldo 12 with Lemon Hart 151 works well for me.
Agreed- I actually do the same thing with daiquiris... just to give it a bit of punch. I used the Hamilton 151 with ED12 before but not the Lemon Hart. Looking forward to giving that a try.
Eldorado 12 and Smith and cross works well also, for the ones that like more funkiness.
Oh, yum! Lemon Hart 151 is such an interesting choice here. It's so rich and has such a depth of flavor with so much of that coffee caramel mocha things going on, I'll have to try this out
First of all, I gotta thank you for what you're doing with Rum. I feel like you're doing an excellent job of pushing it to the forefront of the spirits' conversation. Second, I actually convinced a group of friends to be on the lookout for the Hampden expressions and the Four Square bottles. In terms of drinking, when you know better, you do better. Lastly, I've been eyeing the bottle of Ron Del at my local bottle shop and have been hesitant to pull the trigger. This video might have just pushed me over the edge.

I had a bartender in San Antonio make me a bartender call OF he used the J.M. volcanique sweetened with falernum and garnished with a lime twist. One of the best rum OFs I've ever had. I actually prefer the lime twist in just about all rum OFs I've made/had.

For a chocolate Rum Old Fashioned, you should try
"Panama Companero Rum Extra Anejo"
Color: amber with brown highlights
Aroma: distinctive, earthy, dark chocolate, citrus, oak
Taste: chocolate, cocoa, oranges, cinnamon, caramel
Finish: long and mildly spicy, butter, apple, cocoa

We never see most of these rums in New Mexico, sadly, but they always provide targets when I scan the shelf.
Not exactly an Old Fashioned, but a new fave of mine has been the Black Mesa (on Difford's)-which I suppose is a species of Improved Old Fashioned. 2 oz rum (1.5 aged dem/0.5 Smith&Cross in spec), 0.5 oz Pedro Ximenez sherry (as the sugar), and bitters (split orange/regular ango). The raisin from the PX works so well, and is more complex than just sugar. Great drink to try... I need to swap out rums with it next time.
That sounds delicious. My first reaction was to try it with the Ron del Barillito but that might be sherry overkill. I'm thinking maybe the Hampden?
Dunno, the S&C and El Dorado worked well. The PX sherry is critical vs other sherry, obviously, it's like liquid raisin. It's a great drink, if slightly sweet-which the rum choice could certainly address. I've never had the Hampden, not something I see in Albuquerque. @@therumrevival

When you started talking about a funkier rum, I said "Hampden Estate 8 year" along with you like I was doing karaoke.
The best rum old fashioned I ever had was with Hampden 8 year, and that's been my default choice ever since.

I like Hampden 8 a lot, I just wished it tasted as good as it smells. It has great flavor, but its aroma is AMAZING.

The Charanda Añejo is really nice in an Old Fashioned. I also really dug the Hampden Great House 2020 with cardamom bitters.

One of my fav are Plantation Fiji, makes a great rum old fashion and Don Q Vermouth Cask Finish, also excellent in a rum old fashioned.
I don't think I've ever tried an old fashioned with a Fijian rum... I'll have to give that a try, thanks!
Nice the best rum fashioned I had was the Foursquare 2008 EC Cask Strength w/ Demerara Syrup, Tiki Bitters & and an orange and lime peel. My default is App 12 but I want to check out the Hampden 8 one of these days

The minute I saw this video, I was convinced he was going to pull out Rum Fire at some point in the video lol. I was waiting for it all the way up until the end. I'm pleasantly surprised.
My vote is for the JM Volcanique! Love that bottle. Although... the XO is right next to it on the same shelf...
lol At some point I will crack the old for an unaged rum old fashioned. XO makes a pretty good OF as well. I've found myself reaching maybe more for the Volcanique but more than happy with the XO
@@therumrevival they are both phenomenal. I love every bottle of JM that I own, and I own like half a dozen. The 80 proof white is probably the weak link. But I hear the 100 proof version is significantly better. Need to get that.

@@therumrevival I actually didn't know there was a 110 proof. But I just scored a 100 proof bottle earlier and I'm sipping it side by side with the 80 proof right now. 🤯 What a difference. I'll never buy the 80 proof ever again. I mean assuming I can continue to find this one, but it's like night and day. The flavors are so much more intense. And not just louder but deeper and more nuanced. This really has me wondering why they bother making the 80 proof bottle at all.
Bacardi 8 or Don Q 7 makes a good Rum Old Fashioned for people that aren't comfortable with really rummy rums. I like AE8 and a barspoon of allspice dram with a lime peel expressed over it.

For the first Old Fashioned I ever made with rum I used Ron Abuelo 12 from Panama and it was excellent.

I think the Ron Abuelo 12 yr old is noticeably better than the no age statement release. I know this because I snatched up a bottle once thinking I was some kind of bargain hunting genius for finding the 12 year old for ⅓ its normal price, only to get it home and realize I had the NAS version.
I love old fashioneds, so I found this really interesting. Thanks for including your recipe so we know what you're working with. I like sazeracs as well, so I'll definitely want to check out the Hampden 8 year version!
The Hampden isn't full blown sazerac territory but those absinthe notes does evoke the idea of it to me.
All pretty good choices. An Equiano Old Fashioned is on my frequent rotation. The Rhum J.M. Terroir Volcanique is also a real treat as is the Neisson. Some of my favorites not on your list are made from single cask expressions from Chairman's Reserve. The 1931 makes for a good drink as well but it's a bit pricy for the end product. My go-to bottles are an 11-year at 57.8% and a 15 year at 61.3%.
Honorable mentions for me are The Real McCoy 12 year 46%, RL Seale's 12 year, Privateer Navy Yard, Mount Gay XO, Worthy Park Single Estate, Hamilton St. Lucia 9 year or even going right for the OFTD.
For higher proof rums over 55% or so I'll often stir in a mixing glass for extra dilution before pouring over a large rock.
What's more fun than these? A unique blend of multiple rums each time for variety. Cheers
A 1931 old fashioned is absolutely lovely! Definitly on my list for expensive rum old fashioneds. And you're spot on that blending multiple rums can be a lot of fun. I've only just cracked the surface of that. Definitely plan on trying a bunch of blends and maybe making an video on it.
Great video to think differently about OF. I finally took the path less traveled and made an OF using the Worthy Park Single estate & then another one with HV Forsyths Worthy Park 10 yr. Both were amazing experiences but the HV WP was over the top!

My dad's drink was a traditional "old fashion". But I'm a rum guy, so when I go out I love to see bartenders' expressions when then they say "You must not be from around here" We make ours with ......fill in the blank....I keep plugging away! Thanks for the advice!!
Yeah its funny how asking for a rum old fashioned can trip people up. Hopefully its just the one time and then they realize how great they are.

Great video! I've been waiting for this one, and I didn't even know it! I absolutely love Rum Old Fashioneds. I like to make them with Maple Syrup, I think it goes really well with most Rums. I have Hampden Estate 8 year, and I don't think I used it in an Old Fashioned before, I'm going to try it *tonight*!
I haven't made many ROFs with maple but I'll definitely give it a try. Do you have a prefer rum you use? Let me know what you think of the Hampden ROF
I loved it! made it with Maple :) Hampden 8 really is a beautiful Rum, and the funky banana notes and maple are just a great match. Previously I used and liked El Dorado 12 (as you mentioned in the video), I love everything I tried from Appleton and I also liked Diplomatico in a ROF. Thanks and Cheers!
I'm totally with you on the Hampden 8, but especially the Neisson Reserve Speciale Old Fashioned. It doesn't get much better than that!

My favorite rum old fashioned and the only time I make OFs is with OFTD best way to appreciate it imo.

I've never had a rum old fashioned. I think I'm only slowly getting ready for such boozy coctails.
For your first time, maybe go with a 40% rum and go heavier on the sweetener and bitters. Hope you like it!
