i think their souls is what gives them their personality, because when cuphead was about to get his soul stolen, he turned grey and he looked like he couldn’t really feel emotions (this can also be seen in the first episode too). this also happened to the others in the first episode, they looked like they had no life in them etc. so in my own speculation i think their souls keep them alive and give them their own personality lol
