    Just purchased a Nymphaea bulb of my own yesterday. Off to a great start, already had a number of gorgeous little leaves. I thought of this video immediately and bought it for $11. Even if I don't grow enough to sell (super low-tech tank, I don't even have fertilizer yet), I love the look. Super excited!

    Glad I came across your video it's gotten me inspired to cut the cord on a Nymphaea ( Dwarf Lily) bulb that sent out 2 starter runners opposite of each other. One has a large amount of growth with 4 floaters on the top of the water so I am going to snip it and put in my 55 and see where it take me on this crazy planted tank journey.

    the only thing not to love about nyphaea, is having to trim them so often. :D
    btw: in buried pots of rich organic potting soil, under a layer of gravel, they thrive without any water fertilisation. i give them a gelcap full of garden fertiliser pearls and a little pinch of iron filings every 4 months or so.

    Hi am curious, you say they grow new plants,so you don't then need a bulb, how would you produce another bulb, when I first had mine after it grew I had the plant out of water just for 25 mins in just that time the leafs dried, and when back in the tank all growth was dead

    • @BentleyPascoe

    I have three. Only one was labeled Red Tiger Lotus. Of course being mail order its tiny and I'm working every trick in the book to get it rooted and growing. It was snapped off the bulb. So it had only tiny black roots. But what great color those tiny leafs have. A third I have is ..sort of purple. The biggest was bought for $5 at the LFS..a pale tan Lotus with a strong healthy root system. I like them all..nice contrast to the usual green small leaved aquarium plants.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as it has roots and a good crown, it won't need to be on the bulb, it can recover. Good light really helps them flourish and settle in color wise.

    I've had a tiger lotus a year, the first one didn't really even grow, it produced 1 bulb then died, that second bulb has grown nicely over 6 months, but still no surface leaves or extra bulbs or runners, that's with liquid c02 and c02 tablets, ferts and a planted tank light, still a good looking lily though!

    Great looking if a bit fussy with no Co2 to provoke fast growth. Like a few people's experiences,they can thrive and dive for no reason..and twice I've almost lost my nicest Tiger Lotus. I also have the related common lily that does love to send up pads,with some nice smaller foliage. I'm also trying N.rubra and its not growing any submerged leaves- lol. Not like the photos of big red submerged foliage. But the game is young with that one...lets see about dormancy and all the rest.
    One more thing NEVER GIVE UP..as long as it has even the tiniest leaf,and no roots?...pin it down in a quiet low flow area with good light and slowly it will re grow. You paid good money for a quality Tiger Lotus..hang in there...

    Hi Bentley, the bulb just randomly detached one day from my nymphaea stellata. The bulb looks exactly like it did the day I got it, and it doesn’t feel mushy. I’ve heard this can happen sometimes, and sometimes the bulb will sprout a new plant, but sometimes it will die. Is there any way I can encourage it to sprout a new plant instead of just rotting and dying? I just have a low tech tank with medium light. I dose liquid fertilizer and iron and add root tabs, along with some equilibrium. Hopefully you’ll see this, it’s quite an old video, thanks!

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as the bulb is still dense and sinks, keep it on the substrate in light and it can grow a new plant. This isn't a guarantee, but it's how I've done it in the past. If the bulb floats it won't make more new plants in my experience

    The one thing I've been wondering about Nymphaea species, can all them grow submerged or is it only for specific species?

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any of the ones that you find sold as an aquatic lily will grow submerged. There's a lot of various Nymphaea species out there that are great in aquariums two of the easiest are going to be the dwarf aquarium Lily and the red tiger lotus as far as sourcing them and they generally don't have super high requirements other than medium light. There are some other lilies out there that are really cool and unique that are phenomenal inside your aquarium, but they can be a little harder to find.

    Unless the shipping of live plants/animals is able to go way down, I don't how this stuff is every going to become less expensive, since it's still a niche hobby, and local aquatic stores in all but the larger cities don't carry a variety of plants along with their fish; And even so, they mark them up to make a profit. At any rate, these miniature water lilies might be less lucrative at this point, since you can preserve bulbs and sell them for cheap. I got my lilies as a couple dried bulbs along with like 3 other bulbs for 5 bucks at petsmart from one of the big names just a few weeks ago, and most bulbs were viable.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're in an area where you can more regularly sell, most beginner hobbyists are likely to pay more for a grown plant over the raw bulb. Honestly, there's probably also a market for people who are willing to buy bulbs and bulk and grow them out and then to sell the grow off for some profit.

    • @WhatIsMisophonia
      @WhatIsMisophonia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BentleyPascoe A sprouted plant vs a bulb that may or may not be viable I can understand. A bulk grower for growers though? Well, you'd have to grow a lot, but I guess so... Still, if that's what they want, why wouldn't they just buy cheap bulbs from big companies online?
