Traveling The MOST BRUTAL Highways In North America | Our Journey Back To Alaska

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 4 มิ.ย. 2024
- Come along as we journey 1,500 miles to pick up our new truck camping rig (now named Big Red) from Washington and drive 2,500 miles along the Cassiar and ALCAN Highways back to our home in Alaska. We are deeply saddened to have to give up our old rig Ol' Red, but extremely excited to see the adventures Big Red will bring us. Even the trip home was an unforgettable journey filled with breathtaking views, rare wildlife, and freezing cold side quests that were quite unexpected.

Hi, we are Matt and Emily, and welcome to A Glimpse of Alaska! In September 2022, we made the 5,000 mile drive from our home in Florida to our new home: Alaska. We created this channel to document and share our adventures in this awe-inspiring state. We will be homesteading, truck camping, hunting, fishing, foraging, and doing everything else Alaska has to offer. We hope you follow along and enjoy!

You are only young once, go create your own adventures and memories. Congratulations, I am happy for you both, GM
I hope that new truck & camper has many adventures ahead . Definitely looks like it is a better fit for you guys especially Matt. Thanks for talking us along, sure was a beautiful trip. 😊
We hope so too! It almost feels like luxury compared to what we had!
What a dream! Good on you and great for taking us with you. My eyes were glued to the screen. The scenery is indescribable.❤
Good job folks! Taking on your undertaking was truly an adventure. One that you will remember for years to come. 73 & God Bless
Once when my husband and I were camping up by Byers Lake we needed showers too and ended up stripping down and hopping in the lake. Nobody else was around but of course as soon as we got in a couple came walking down the trail. They stopped nonchalantly and chatted with us for a minute and with the first words out of their mouths we realized they were German and saw absolutely nothing unusual with what we were doing LOL, it was awesome. We've traveled the Al Can several times and loved every minute of it. Lots of good memories.
Albertan here. Been enjoying your videos! As someone with a couple OBS Fords and having just thrown a camper on mine I find it relatable and interesting. Maybe I’ll see you in BC one day haha.
Take care of your back now. If you continually abuse it, old age is a beast. Enjoy the new truck and camper. Traveling in a camper is a blast!
GI Shower or Spit Bath. Takes approximately 2 cups of water, a bar of soap and a towel. It will clean you perfectly. They are amazing. You’ll feel like you had a full shower, minus the shampooing of hair.
Fun trip! Thanks for taking us along. Congrats on the new truck and camper!
If you haven’t checked, any RV or trailer dealer will have a replacement cover for the refrigerator access. Glad you enjoyed British Columbia, we live in Ontario and the northern part of Ontario also has some spectacular mountains and lakes. Thanks for sharing the drive, BC is one area of Canada we haven’t been able to travel to…yet! Safe travels !
You guys should have went with a pull behind camper. I make the trip from Idaho up through BC into Alaska hunting. I will never go back to a bed camper, it really takes a toll on the truck.
You could try a sponge bath with warm water, that's what I would do. I would love to drive the Cassiar route. I was born in Whitehorse. Grew up in southwest BC. Now live on Vancouver Island.
One more state south, and there are zero sales tax in. Oregon. Good luck to you! I hope you become more confident and your need to explain/justify why you do everything mellows. You explained why and where you bought a gallon of water. I didn't make it past all of the explanations and 1st meal.
You are a young likeable couple living in a gorgeous state. Brightest Blessings to you ❤
Looks like you have got yourselves a nice truck and camper. And as far as not finding a shower to use, you can buy a package of wet wipes to use. They are better than a freezing river to try to clean up in.
We had been using wipes but it just wasn’t doing it for us after a while. Call us spoiled lol!
@@AGlimpseOfAlaskahaha. I can understand that. Wipes are good for a day max after that not having a nice shower can put a damper on your mood and mental well being.
Have fun and enjoy ,congratulations it looks amazing
❤ beautiful video we always love watching. Alan&Maria
Absolutely amazing. Nice sound thanks for sharing your adventure. Guys I recommended you visit the himalayan mountains k2 and Nangaparbat view point from one place moses peak. Add this sound in your bucket list.
Wow! That’s a long journey. I‘m glad you made it back alright.
Hi from Bodrum🖐️😄 I’m watching this episode in my caravan right now 😄 By the way,my name is Alkan 😄
Good morning from Godley Texas, quite the journey to purchase a new truck and camper. Thanks for sharing the video photography with us. Glad you had basically an uneventful trip as far as problems go. Looking forward to see how you tweak the camper to meet your needs. Continue living life to the fullest.😎
Thank you! We sure got lucky having not much go wrong.
What a great adventure. Congratulations on the new camper and truck.
Very nice ride guys ❤.
Most truck stops have showers if you can find one.
We’ve been on at least 30 or 40 1,000+ mile road trips together now so we are well versed with truck stops. After the first day we didn’t come across any truck stops the entire rest of the trip. There were a couple rest stops with a lot of truckers but no amenities. If we would have known we wouldn’t see another truck stop after the first day we probably would have showered on day 1 🙂
I'm on my 4th camper. Started off small, went bigger, then shower. Now we found our final camper. Oh yeah, three trucks with covid later. Ram 3500 srw, not big enough. Now 3500 drw diesel, af 990, we made it. I'm looking forward to the Alaska trip.
Who’s looking after the dog and cats
Very cool
Hey guy just saying and I dont mean to be rule but I hope Matt will keep his hair and beard you look much younger with it .
Congratulations and the new camper
Good for you!
Congratulations on the new rig!! So exciting!!❤❤
We have lots Of Tim Hortons in Michigan.
Good to see you on here again❤
That camper is a great upgrade. Nice !!
Good looking rig!
Very nice trip..but that ice cold bath hahaha... maybe consider taking an empty (foldable) bucket and a portable battery operated outdoor shower.. boil some water to mix with the cold and you can comfortably shower anywhere in the future
We would have done that if we drove from home but we could only take as much gear as would fit in a few suitcases for the plane ride.
Great Trip you two. Awesome scenery 😊
When heating freeze dried foods, you need to take the oxygen packs out before pouring the water in the pouch. That might be why it tasted terrible.
What a road trip hope the new truck serves you well love your videos❤❤❤❤
Wow! I'm not a good traveler. I would not have enjoyed that trip at all. I admire your youth and ambition. You two are great!
Thanks for sharing and good luck. Do it now while your young✌️Take care🇺🇸❤️
I give you two credit for the cold baths in the frozen river. Most would not have done that. Great video!
Congratulations on the truck and camper. Adventures ahead
Awesome video you guys! Challenges! You both met them well! ❤😊
Love your new setup. Beautiful truck. Great decision! Love your videos. ❤ Blessings.
Chris
Good looking rig. You should be able to have some great adventures with it.👍👍👍
Congratulations on getting what you need for you . Need to make you happy
Really cool to see how this story has developed.
Wow, what a trip! I'm wore out just thinking about it but I'm A LOT older too! Big Red looks nice and the new camper does too! Looking forward to more camping trip adventures!
When you guys stopped at the Canyon that looks like Miles Canyon just a few minutes from Whitehorse. If you woulda gone down the road and turned left you would have gotten down there and walked across the bridge. It is beautiful out there. I would say Yukon is just such a beautiful Territory. thanks for the road trip and glad you guys made it home safe. Im sure Aurora missed you guys.
Woo! You guys are Boss!!
Always an adventure out there waiting. Way to enjoy each other and the beautiful drive back. Thanks for sharing. Will be back to see the future of trucks and campers. Hey I know, now you have a hiss and hers camper set up 😅
Beautiful video ❤❤
So cool that you guys saw a Lynx! I have made the drive twice so far, once in Fall and once during the winter and have never seen one. Also, I had to admit to myself that the Northern Rockies of British Columbia is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. Alaska but cleaner and more pristine, so beautiful! Love the new camper, great video guys!
Love your channel, congratulations on the new vehicle and camper. Yes BC is beautiful, we live on Sunshine Coast and we love it but we love how beautiful Alaska now from watching all the Alaskan Channels.
You did the right thing.Hi from Colorado Springs 😀
Morning, Congratulations on your new truck and camper. Matt , great job on your driving skills especially with a new vehicle. Thank you for the trip ! Happy Mother’s Day Emily , I know your 3 fur babies were sure happy to see you. Happy Sunday :)
Thank you! Aurora was happy to see us but the cats don’t seem to care too much lol. Happy Tuesday! 🙂
You guys are getting really good at videos.
Glad you made it home and I bet that nice warm shower at home was fabulous! That drive was beautiful, but I wouldn't want to do it often. Wishing you many more adventures in the new rig! I'm looking forward to the videos.
Haha it sure was nice to have a warm shower. Agreed, it’s a nice drive to do once every so often. There’s stretches that feel like they drag on foreverrr. Most of the drive is unbelievably beautiful though!
This is so sad, I would never leave my pets like that.
Super.
u drove thru my province 😻
Cool trip. Beautiful scenery!!!! Dollar Tree is 1.25 for all items, unless it's a plus store. Canada is 1.50. Lots of soups and snacks for cheap eats along the way. Missed the furbaby, and I bet you guys really did. Get some rest! :)
The town you were in is not called Caribou. The region of BC you were in was the Caribou. My guess you were in Quesnel. You pronounced Cassier correct, there's no town left, doubt the turnoff is marked, the Asbestos mine closed down in the 90's.
I get it. And I have had 4 of that vintage trucks. 460 EFI Ford is a good engine. Last one I had, had 225K on it and still going strong. I can't see why anyone would give you a bad time for upgrading, all your reasons are legit.
You’d be surprised what people will say and get upset about on the internet lol!
I love living in BC Canada 🇨🇦 Have a safe trip
Great video, and I really like the longer format! It's definitely a long trip, and you can tell you guys were ready to get home. Can't wait to see what renovations you make on the new camper. Embrace those ice baths, Emily. I heard they're great for rejuvenation 😉😂 That being said, I'd prolly run screaming from the cold water! Much love!
Thank you! Yes, by the end of it we were so tired and especially ready for a warm bath. Whatever benefits an ice bath has I won’t be seeing any time soon! Not planning on doing that again for a while 😂 my feet definitely hurt the worst having to walk in slowly on the slippery rocks, the rest actually wasn’t that bad! - Emily
We’re I live in Western Australia in the out back we pay by the litre ..works out to near $10 a gallon
WOW didn't see that coming! congrats on the new truck and camper - it looks perfect! you are certainly going to make excellent use of it and that's a good investment for all the future adventures - I can't wait! what a gorgeous drive! ❤ (and you kids need to get with the duct tape repair kit! that stuff holds anything together until you get to actually fixing it LOL)
Honestly like 3 months ago we never would have seen it coming either. If you want to see us use duct tape, watch next week’s video lol. It’s a really great tool to have!
I just got back thursday, the roads were bad. Beat the crap out of me
It makes no sense to try pleasing other people! You have to do what is right for you and your future adventures! We have camped for many years, you learn as you go and change as you go! We are on our 3rd camper! My only suggestion….don’t change too much too fast! Use it for a trip or two to make sure what you want to change!
Hi both, absolutely loving your videos here in Wales.
If I heard you right, you said you might think about building your own camper one day, if so it might be worth you taking a look at Riley and Courtney Casey,a lovely couple who have a channel called Ambition Strikes.
They built their own a few years ago in the fairly early days of their channel and it turned out absolutely stunning.
Please keep up the great work you’re doing and I’m looking forward to watching many more of your videos.
Thanks
QUESTION....are you able to buy items or take advantage of lower prices and buy items and stock up on items that you needed such as food, tool, homegoods or health and beauty items while in Washington ?
SUGGESTION change every fluid in that truck including transmission fluid, differential fluid etc. You never know what or when has been done to the truck. Change the oil every 3 to 5 thousand miles. How many miles on the truck? Also, can u do a video on your truck.
Putting airbags in the rear will make your drive easier
It’s got airbags and we inflated them before putting the camper on. They help big time
I love the floor plan of this camper. Just curious about pricing there, could I ask what you paid for both of them please.
Good move getting a larger rig if the other one was to small to sleep comfortably as you'd suffer in later life even if you tolerated it now!
You are right.
The ReadyWise meals are just awful as you found out. My favorite freeze dried meals come from Peax and Heather's Choice. It's all I ate (that wasn't snacks) on the way up to Alaska and back last year.
It was the first freeze dried meal I’ve ever ate that I couldn’t finish. I try sooo hard not to waste food but I’m not sure that was food. I was gagging off camera lol. I will give those meals a try for sure. Thank you! -Matt
@@AGlimpseOfAlaska Heather's Choice also has the perk of being an Alaska company. They're a little spendy but I haven't not liked any of their meals that I've tried.
You can always shower @ a Truck Stop
Couldn’t you have gotten a couple of wash cloths too. Then you could boil some water and take turns washing off a little.
What do u guys plan to do with the old rig ?
What kind of fuel milage did the F250 get on your trip home?
Would it be cheaper to take the ferry from Washington to Alaska to save some money.
i wonder how you guys filling the gas tank in canada do they accept us credit cards ? or its has to be canadian money thanks
What an epic adventure! Navigating the toughest highways in North America must be quite the journey. We sent you an email, check it out!
Hey guys, just wondering why you didn’t fill up the freshwater tank in Washington so you could at least take a showers?
The camper is winterized.
FYI...those sounds were geese ... not loons.
May I ask why you chose the Cassiar as I’ve found on my research it is a little longer, more remote and narrower? We are planning our 2025 trip. Was it because of where you crossed the border?
2 reasons. We had never driven the Cassiar and wanted to. Also it was the shortest path to home from WA. We are glad we drove the Cassiar but probably won’t do it again the future. The roads were so much worse and more remote than the ALCAN that we would pick the extra 5 hours and drive the ALCAN next time. We had to go so far below the speed limit that it probably would have been faster to take the ALCAN instead even though google said it wouldn’t.
Seriously! You’ve never seen a gas pump with a lever to lift first to pump?
You want to see bad roads come to nyc
@44:47 Ironic that you're also wearing that shirt
I brought that shirt on purpose. You might be the first one to notice 😄 -Matt
Um, 212 cents/gal is $2.12/gal. Did you mean per liter? 😊
If I said that I did mean liters. -Matt
Just curious, does Emily ever drive? Put her butt behind the wheel, she needs to learn to learn to drive that beast.
Why didnt you fill water tank empty your own shower out of gear in there turn your gas onbhave nice hotvshower in there
Should have gotten hotel in whitehorse , taking a long hot shower and slept in a bed for about 10 hours.
Something you could have explained in about 2 minutes you drug on for 10 mins.
