    Dear Ms. Tappin, I think I can clear up the mystery of those silver (gray?) dots on the gilded frame. Gold is soluble in mercury; when the two substances are brought together, an amalgam is formed that looks silver-gray. This amalgam is or was used in so-called fire gilding.
    BTW: I'm very interested in ancient craft techniques and your portrayal of the profession and skills of a gilder is without precedent. I only recently became aware of your channel and am now watching video after video. It's unbelievable how generously you share your knowledge and skills. Thank you very much for that!

      The first time it happened it was a bit of a shock. I try to be so careful with the mercury, but there was so much on this convex. I haven't seen fire gilding face to face yet, but I think it's one of the nicest looking forms of gilding. But understandable it can no longer be done.
      Hope you enjoy watching the videos. Hopefully will be starting making more soon.

    • @georghalder2816

      I understand that you were shocked. When you've worked for days and hours to get a perfect result - and then these spots appear... but as we could see, you can't be defeated!
      I haven't seen fire gilding "live" yet either. In Germany there are still 2 or 3 people who offer this and they work with very high security systems. I have a few old furniture fittings in my workshop that are fire-gilded. An acanthus flower is particularly beautiful. You know it's just bronze, but the gilding makes you think you're holding a nugget of gold. While cleaning this piece I also learned how durable this type of gold plating is.
      I wish you all the best and thank you again for your such informative and well-made videos!
      Georg

      Mercury is used to dissolve gold from its ore in primitive parts of the world and then the mercury driven off with heat. A bit like Mercuric gilding itself. The Mercury vapour sends you mad of course.

    I gave up frame restoration years ago because I was finding it difficult to justify (and charge appropriately for) the time involved. However watching your videos has reminded me just how much I used to enjoy it. Often I would receive a painting for restoration and the client would leave me with the throwaway comment ' …oh and could you just tidy the frame up as well?' Often they were happy to spend thousands on the restoration of the painting but expected to pay much much less on 'tidying up' the frame. I would love to know how you charge - ie for these 2 mirrors - and if you ever come up against the same problems. I could imagine there being 100+ hours involved in the restoration and gilding alone which, at my hourly rate would equal around 3.5k plus materials! Am I being naive in thinking not many private clients would be willing to pay that kind of money? Perhaps I am. I recently had a bill for servicing my car from my local garage and for around 10 hours work plus materials I was charged almost £1000!! Any thoughts / advice would be greatly appreciated.

      @@RuthTappinGilder Thank you for your reply Ruth. So do you have a rate per hour or per job? A furniture restorer once told me… 'if you are asked to give a fixed price for a job, think, take the first number you come up with then double it!' Not something I always do but it is always a reminder that, in restoration, inevitably 'stuff' happens that you couldn't have planned for. Speaking for myself, I almost never charge the private customer 'by the hour' as it can become very silly very quickly! Obviously if I do work for larger institutions or 'insurance work' I can charge a more realistic amount. Swings and roundabouts I guess.

    Mercury amalgamates with gold and some other metals. There's a video by NileRed where he shows a blob of mercury dissolving some gold leaf, and apparently it's the same process as making dental amalgams (but with different metals)! It absorbs the gold and stays silver so that's what you got on the frame.😅
    Interesting how you can date gilding from the bole colour. Did the colours go in and out of fashion? Learning a lot from your videos!👍

    • @RuthTappinGilder
      @RuthTappinGilder  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks.
      Gluing compo onto wire is the only time I use superglue. You want something fast drying to just keep it in place for the few minutes untill the compo backing goes on, which is what fixes the compo decoration to the wire permanently. Slower glues would need the compo to be clamped in place while the glue set.
