    Super helpful. Loved the tip about sewing the neckband together before attaching to shirt.

    This is a helpful video. However, can you give some information about what size to cut the neck band in relation to the neck hole? How much smaller should the finished neckband be that the neck hole before attaching it?

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In this video, we recommend cutting your neckband 1" smaller than your neckline measurement. That usually works for an average stable knit, like jersey. If your fabric is very heavy or very lightweight, you might need to adjust. In this case, you can always try basting your neckband to make sure and then giving it a final stitch!

      You got this! If you are just learning, sometimes it helps to use scrap fabric to cut a bunch of necklines and neckbands and just try them one after the other until you get it perfect :)

      Measure neck and subtract one inch.

    It looks so easy, mine always stand up instead of laying flat. I will say I haven't tried doing one that early in the construction because I'm always messing with the pattern and the fit... and my shoulders aren't even, I end up redoing the shoulder seams before I put the neckband on. This is a helpful video, I will try it next time I do a top with a pattern that is already fit.

      Carol D. It may stand up if the neckband is cut on the straight of grain. Try cutting the band cross grain (across the width of the fabric).

    • @carold.8782
      @carold.8782 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pams-w1847 Thanks! I'm pretty sure I cut them across the grain for the stretch. I'll just keep experimenting!

      That's a great tip from Pam, and it can also help to give your neckline a generous press on a tailor's ham when you are done. A twin needle can also help secure the seam allowance down which will help the neckband sit flat. Another tip is to cut your neckband even a little bit shorter (so maybe 1 1/2" smaller than your neckline) which means you have to stretch it more as you attach it. Just don't make it too short or it can bunch up. It's a delicate balance that is affected by fabric choice, but you'll get there if you experiment enough! :)

    How do you prevent the neckband seam area from becoming wavy after doing the twin needle topstitching? That area always gets wobbly and wavy after that step.

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! Twin needles are very sensitive, so you can try hand cranking your machine to make sure you control your fabric best. It's always a good idea to go really slow with twin needles over any bumps.

    Thank you, very helpful! What am I doing wrong when my neckband gapes away from the garment? Does this just mean that the neckband is too long and needs to be shortened? Other reasons?

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that generally indicates that the neckband is too long. You might have to do a little trial and error to get the correct length but shortening it will definitely help!

  • @elendipity
    @elendipity 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I read somewhere that the the size of the neckband should be 10% less the real measurement taken on the T-shirt, do you confirm this? Because I tried actually with the “normal” size measuring on the T-shirt and it seems a little bit falling.

  • @pams-w1847
    @pams-w1847 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    RTW places the neckband seam on the left shoulder seam. Otherwise the seam just sort of hangs there by itself and looks like a mistake.

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You can definitely move the neckband seam to one of the shoulder seams. One benefit of having the seam in the back of me-made garments is that you can easily tell what's the back and front when you go to put on your shirt ;)

    Thank you for this great tutorial! What size is the twin needle, or does it not matter?

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a few sizes that you can choose from! If your pattern doesn't specify, go with your preference.

    Can I used a regular stitch to sew the neckline? I don't have a serger. Thanks for the video.

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A straight stitch will probably pop. You can use a zigzag or another stretch stitch.

    • @elsplace896
      @elsplace896 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SeamworkVideo I have zig zag. I just botched a top. Didn't fold neck band in half and was wondering why they made it so long!! Sewed it on and then things got silly. Then I watched your video and ordered more fabric to do it right.

    Your snippets stated to measure neck and subtract one inch for the neckband. But what seam allowance when you see the ends together?

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just use the seam allowance instructed in the pattern-for Seamwork patterns it's 3/8" for knits. If you want to get really deep into knit neckbands, you can experiment with different stretch ratios to see what gives you the perfect knit neckband. For most knits with 25% stretch, subtracting an inch from the neckline gives you just enough stretch for the neckband to lay flat.

    i missed the measurements... how long should i make the neckband?

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That will depend on your pattern! Seamwork knit neckband patterns are drafted to be 82-85% smaller than the neck opening. If you're using a pattern that doesn't include a neckband pattern piece you'll need to measure your top's neck opening and do some math!

    This video is missing a lot of basic information like how wide to cut the fabric, how long to cut it and what the serger seam allowance should be.

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep! Its focus is on sewing, not drafting a knit neckband. Seam allowances will depend on the pattern. If you're curious about drafting a neckband, check out this video: th-cam.com/video/gtLQK-47bGQ/w-d-xo.html
