You've just rescued me from going through a period of writer's block. Thank you very much for your help. Your videos left me feeling absolutely inspired. Coffee, puff puff, and the making of music are all on the schedule today. You are a person who is down-to-earth and humble in nature. Thank you so much for your advice.
@@manny7662Yes, I added a TR-808, an E-Mu ESI-4000 Turbo and some small footprint synths, but the basis are still the mentioned machines. Really love this.
The definite star of this show is the Octatrack - live looper, fx, scenes, routing and mixing. The other two elements are interchangeable with pretty much anything. Damn I wish I had an Octatrack! (err I just got to the end of the video where you talked about this exact same stuff!)
Nice video as usual! For me: ESQ-1 as synth/sequencer, Mirage Rack as sampler, 2 CZ-101’s as high line and low line, Yamaha RX-5 or TR-707 as drum machine, a couple of Alesis FX. Made money with that setup in the 80’s. 😎👍🏼
I think the "1 Drummachine, 1 Synth, 1 Sampler" Philosophy is a perfectly valid way to look at things... If that sampler is the Octatrack. Without a mixer it will otherwise be pretty hard to get close to the results. But still, nice video.
Hey Ricky just want to say I love your videos, they’re an inspiration when it comes to making music and loving your instruments/machines! Also your voice is like therapeutic lmao
I ended up having to sell everything a while back during a bit of a cash poor period. I loved my Octotrack and once things are stable I'm definitely wanting it again. Do everything inside that and potentially pair it with budget drums and synths a la volca, behringer etc and you've got a total package. Having played with a Tempest before though... They are so much fun.
My writing partner has a Tempest and very well versed on how it works. His demos are always amazing and leave me thinking “how did he do that?” They are NOT expensive for what they can do in the right hands.
Got a Tempest the day they discontinued them. It's in my top 3 drum machines alongside the jomox xbase09 and TR808. It vibes like all the favs that I've sold over the years and miss: novation drumstation + linn drum + oberheim dmx stretch. It's slowly pushing the TR 626, Kawai XD5 and R8m out of my studio. It's not perfect, but neither were any of those machines. The Tempest really feels like home too me and the synth mode is just a great bonus.
I'm doing pretty much the same with the Polyend Seq as a MIDI step sequencer, some effect pedals and the 1010music BlackBox. Difference is: I can't do this live (also because I'm not as good as you, I started last spring and am still learning a lot), so I first sequence some synth (like the Norand Mono or the Modal Argon 8M) or some drums from a Nord Drum 3P, then play around with a couple of effect pedals for delay, reverb, chorus (or other weird stuff, I just got the Meris Hedra which does wonders to a mono synth and an Pladask Elektrisk Baklengs pedal), then record the result into the Blackbox and then do a 2nd session the other day where I mix the samples into a "song". So while it's nice that the Octatrack can do so much, I learned by now that I don't use gear much that requires menu diving or has a million hidden options (e.g. the Red Panda Tensor 😖). I like one function per knob and right now, I can understand my gear better by splitting up the tasks into several steps: 1. sound design 2. melody 3. song mix. Nonetheless ... same idea behind the setup. Just different gear and a slower, more comprehensable "less pro, more noob" workflow, maybe I'll get to your level one day 😅
I've got the Octatrack as you like my main thing in the set up. The Digitakt is playing the drums and some Basslines and acts also like a little mixer for the Typhon for some Live Mono Bass Fun. For the Melodies I'm using the JU-06A. It's nice but to make all melodic stuff with this it's sometimes really difficult to reach some different results. In the Future the Take 5 will be a part of my set up because it sounds so good!
I'm all for maximizing duties and covering all bases with the fewest pieces of kit. My current setup to do this: Alesis Micron. It is a chameleon synth with lots of classic sounds buried in it along with the ability to mix them up (including acid 303 stuff with the 3 pole filter and has it's own distortion), the digitone to cover the FM base the micron can't do in terms of the synth sounds, then MC101 for a massive rompler and sample editor and it's all fed into the main machine, an RS7000, a machine that is a rompler and sampler and midi controller and has features most DAWS can't match when it comes to hands on editing of sequences in real time. These 4 units voltron into my setup and the sonic possibilities are essentially limitless. THey cover all bases: live instruments (within reason, obviously), subtractive synths and classic synth tonal quality (the micron literally cannot be distinguished from classics even by expert ears), FM synthesis for extreme experimental stuff (only the FS1R or OPSix can really out do it but those are for absolutely mental FM freaks), and the sampler/rompler/sequencer brain to pull it all together. This is my mini studio and it's my space ship to any sonic dimension I wish to go to. Sure, it may look like a junky millinium falcon, but it can do the kessel run in just 12 parsecs, too.
Such a great setup; the octatrack completely changed how I think about making music and playing live. That trick about keeping the feedback high on the delay for the drum track is great, I’ve been doing a similar scene but only had the feedback up on the scene instead of the instrument. Thanks as always Ricky!
I saw that the tempest was borrowed and somehow I knew it was yours. There are definitely less confusing live loopers (Roland RC-505 mk2) but I would over the moon if you picked up the octatrack.
it took me getting sober to clear my mind enuf to read the manual and comprehend what it all meant. drinking lots of caffeine instead of alcohol has been a game changer for me, thanks pandemic?
Stoked to see a Tempest in a current video! I love my Tempest. It's been in a box since I moved from LA city to Manhattan Beach (a year ago ugh) but I'm gettin ready to bust it out. As you know so many pieces of gear out at once can often get overwhelming and it's nice to change up the rigs form time to time. Always get a fresh perspective that way. Nice work bro as usual.
I have the Tempest and ISLA S2400 and they are fantastic together. Could easily do an entire album with just those two.....but I’m also considering adding an Arturia DrumBrute with them.
Soon as you begin to say the word, "expensive" everyone's eyes immediately turn to that Tempest. It looks/sounds like you are in your bag with this setup. Good stuff!
Something like my akai force can do this all in the box although I love adding my minibrute 2s to it and I really want a drum machine but you can’t beat the quickness of work flow. It has some great synth plugins including a great electric piano one, a good to great (depends on how much work you put into it) drum machine plugin, amazing sampling, internal mixer with all kinds of effects buses and sends, lfos and automation for controlling things internally or externally, cv outputs and more. It even has a regular style looper or you can loop directly to an audio track. It can honestly do a lot, so far I use it for producing, running stuff live with backing tracks and/or clock tracks, sampling and as a external effects unit both for a mixer and through the fx loop on a guitar amp and out doors out all amazingly. I went from needing a bunch of equipment to now being able to use this for a lot of it. I think the mpcs have a lot of the same capabilities but not as quick of a flow for all of it and mind not as powerful on the processing, I’m thinking about being one to be a separate fx unit/2nd samples/looper and/or like having two dj decks but for live music making
I'm SO glad I snagged a Tempest as soon as it was announced they were discontinued. I'm holding onto mine FOREVAH!!! Now to downsize the modular to add a Super 6 Desktop to the arsenal 🔊🕊️🕊️🕊️
You dont need to beef up your Tempest in OT..... just use feedback and distortion together with layering while designing the drums. This will take some time, have dedicated sessions to create and synthesize your kicks. And always, always use that envelope decay > envelope decay amount modulation in the matrix. Distortion on Tempest is way better than on Ar btw. There is no reason to search for fundamentals in that OT eq... just boost your fundamental on the synth.
I've gone through a few modern drum machines over the years. Machinedrum UW, Jomox xbase etc... but it turns out, tonally, the one I regret selling was the MFB Tanzbar (v1). Worth checking into before splurging on a Tempest. Because, the raw tone, is just right there. My current favourite is the Acidlab Drumatix, a sleek take on the best of the 606, with some added 808 beef and Boss lo-fi crackle. To me, the MFB Tanzbar and Acidlab Drumatix are the low-key future classics. RIP Manfred Fricke :(
Time is perfect for Sequential to make a more affordable Tempest like they made an affordable poly with the Take 5. I'm happy if it keeps the analog synth but only provides tweakable samples for drums. Make it with a two-octave offset pads keyboard that doubles up as drum pads, kind of like on OP-1, except larger. I'm sure that would sell like cupcakes at 700 bucks
Drum machine, synth and sampler...I have my Boss Dr202, a Volca Keys, and an SP404 (and a mixer)...so my setup has the value of about 3 Tempest pads but I'm basically just like Ricky Tinez 😎
It's the live looping which makes this more reliant on the Octatrack. If you were in a position to spend more time doing prep then that would open out the options for using a lot cheaper gear. Like Ricky says the drum machine and synth is capable of being replaced with a lot of other stuff out there.
Hi Ricky, Can you compare some plug-ins to the old MPCs to see if any come close? I have always been curious about Native Instrument’s Battery since I believe they specifically call out the MPC 60 in their lo fi filters. ✌️
Well, I bought mine new when they came out for what I see them on Reverb now, so if you want one I wouldn’t sleep, especially if Ricky makes more videos with it!
A drum machine sample synth ..and a multi track like a tascam dp008 ex is the perfect combo for a dawless set up I don't see many people using multitracks in there set up But it makes a big difference for layering mixing mastering ect I put all my stuff on to it .and it makes a big difference putting something like a p.o through one As u can eq and compress and record it on two tracks and pan them to add a bit of stereo into the mix
So far I have a 1010 Music Blackbox and a Korg Minilogue XD for a hardware setup; all I need is a drum machine and I'm set! Also looking into getting the Modal Electronics Aragon 8, that thing is sexy
I love the tri-force of such a simple but powerful setup! I’m working with something similar in A4, MDUW+ and OT - But I often need more polyphony than A4 can handle, which is where Hydrasynth & DM12 come in. It’s obviously more busy and less focused, but it’s manageable. I currently have to run the polys through MD and A4 to get everything into OT, but I definitely need to invest in a mixer..perhaps bluebox would be a perfect fit.
Hi Ricky thank you so much for all your knowledge sharing and so frequent and rich contents. I'm in the dawless world since a really few time, your videos are for sure the most useful, complete and inspiring I'd like to ask you: in a setup like this one, how do you manage the arrangement? is there a brain which holds all (or almost) the single tracks/parts, basically sending just midi notes to all the other devices, or do you prefer setting each device's sequencer and then switching patterns manually, or with program change, when possible? I'm really undecided about this topic: on one hand it's better holding the whole song, or project, in just one device; on the other hand it's a pity sometimes not to take advantage of some nice features of the single sequencers. What do you think about it? I'm quite sure you faced the same, while arranging your tunes. Thanks again!
Always enjoyable watching your approaches and setups, and hearing your music. Really nice, chill vibe on this one Ricky. 😆 I would have to agree with others in this being a very high priced, simplistic setup, but if you got it, rock it!
Tempest has a bit of an Arturia Drumbrute & Impact sound quality but one that has been honed to near perfection. Love the simplicity of this setup as well. Less really is more.
Thanks for the video, friend. This is an interesting workflow for sure. I'm contemplating a similar setup with the Digitakt and an external mixer. Using the Volca Drum for the perc and Volca Bass for either bass or lead parts. Just looking at poly synths now, but in all likelihood will stick with sample playback of chords instead.
This video has made me reconsider my synth choices! I guess the only thing missing is chords. I'm not sure how good the octatrack is with polyphonic recording
RC202 is a nice inexpensive looper. The effects on it aren't the most expressive, but I've been really enjoying it. Combined with synths on the Circuit, and the flexibility of the TR-8S drum machine it's a really great combo. Great video Ricky.
Can confirm, Super 8 goes pretty hard on all fronts. It would probably be a modern classic if not for like 5 seconds of a choice that unintentionally ended up hurting the vibe for many. When that moment comes, don’t let it, everything else is superb.
Hey my friend, it’s Philippe Bouchard here from Clair New-Brunswick Canada and I have been Blind since my Birth, but I do love to play some music especially with some Loopers, Drum Machines and I would like to try some Synthetisors as well with all of my other Musical Instruments that I am playing today; like: the guitare, the piano and so much more!!!!!!!**** But what is your best advice in order to try all of this on a Desk Top Computer and with a Screan Reader like: N V D A, with JAWS and also with Narator? Because these are what we are calling: Screan Reader and it avoids us to read out loud what is on the Screan and that is all thanks to the Voice that is guiding us through so many things and that is help us a lot Blind People!!!!!!******
I REALLY like your videos. I'm a Hop Hop head in its truest form. Your videos inspire ✨️ me to do music again. I have been listening to what's called Hip Hop on a few streaming services and it does not make me want to create. Your videos do. Thank you. 😊
next time it would dope with your small modular with drum machine and a sampler, think you could cook some fire with that combo. love what you do, keep it up, much love from Denmark
I've got an Octatrack, Digitakt, and a Wavestate. The DT and Wavestate are in boxes waiting to be sold, but damn if you didn't just convince me to take them out of the box and set them up in exactly this same way! Great video man.
A great tutorial for anybody who wants to go dawless. I personaly use also the octatrack as sampler and "hearth" of my setup. What do you guys use as sampler ? Sp 404, akai?
would you ever consider releasing this track? i like to come back to your videos often and i had not the best morning but this melody has me feeling alright about myself and life.
Nice combo but I would prefer a dedicated sampler like my Z4 (no built in sequencer) an analog poly, analog mono and a hardware sequencer for my minimum DAWLESS setup. My regular studio includes three hardware samplers, a few digital/analog synths and hardware sequencers.
I have a great sample, a great synth and a clone of an iconic drum machine, all the right tools, But I'm such a newb to working in this hardware medium so I feel so handcuffed by my own lack of skills, but I just have to keep digging and trying and learning. I know when I crack it this rig will be such a powerhouse, hahaha. so far its me scratching my head a lot, haha
It would be awesome for comparison's sake for you to do the same song on the circuit rhythm accompanied by Take 5 and to see to what extent the Rhythm can and cannot do what the Octatrack could do here.
Nice video Ricky. Question for you. I own an AR mk 2. I don't need timestretch or MIDI sequencing. Why would I buy an octatrack? I know the former is marketed as a drum machine, but it's capable of more and (I'm told - never used an octatrack) easier to use. What am I missing?
What do you think of the MPC Keys 61. It seems to have the sampler, synth and drum machine in one. Could you use that alone for a live set? Would you bring a Digitakt or second box along?
LOL! That is the most expensive synth sampler drum machine combo of all time, and I'm here for it!
Awe yeah ❤😂
You've just rescued me from going through a period of writer's block. Thank you very much for your help. Your videos left me feeling absolutely inspired. Coffee, puff puff, and the making of music are all on the schedule today. You are a person who is down-to-earth and humble in nature. Thank you so much for your advice.
My setup:
Sampler -> Akai MPC 2000 XL
Synth -> Roland TB-303
Drum Machine -> Roland TR-909
Simple, effective, easy-to-use.
are you still using this setup at the moment?
@@manny7662Yes, I added a TR-808, an E-Mu ESI-4000 Turbo and some small footprint synths, but the basis are still the mentioned machines. Really love this.

4:20 Pro3 sounds like its talking, love it!
A lot less time consuming than learning to play an instrument as well.
@@fromgreetings I would posit that the Tempest *IS* an instrument.
The price is reasonable considering that it's also a 6 voice polysynth too.
Got a Tempest the day they discontinued them. It's in my top 3 drum machines alongside the jomox xbase09 and TR808. He plays a banger and says "Not bad, huh?" You're an inspiration Ricky Tinez!

Volca sample, drum, keys and modal skulpt all going through nts1 is just an amazing budget setup.
Such a great setup; the octatrack completely changed how I think about making music and playing live. I look forward to these videos all week man. I really enjoy watching you make music! Very inspirational.
That Tempest has brought me tears of joy and pain over the years and it still does look the muts nuts to this day
The Tempest has never looked better 🤗
Really like the live looping functionality of the Octatrack, maybe I need to familiarize myself with it more! 🔥
The eternal mantra: "I should learn more about the Octatrack"

i still don't comprehend it all honestly, but i'm getting closer, LoL
A collab of the two of you jamming would make me so happy
Love these 'holy trinity' videos - would be awesome to see you explore other permutations of gear.
Would be nice also to do that with some cheap equipment!

Awesome video. Tempest is the best machine I ever owned. Best sounding drum machine/synth with unbelievable possibilities.
I guess that’s what the dark trinity is (Analog Rytm, Analog Four and Octatrack) and you also get 4 tracks with the analog four 😋
You're gonna love the Tempest while you have it and not want to let go of it.
I have the Tempest and ISLA S2400 and they are fantastic together. Could easily do an entire album with just those two.....but I’m also considering adding an Arturia DrumBrute with them.
I have those exact ones (and a few others) as well and agree with you 100%!!!
I run a very similar setup except I use a Tanzbar, Pro 3 and Analog Rytm as my sampler! Awesome to see the same concept here
The groove examples are really chilled out. Would LOVE to hear RIcky Tinez live.

Not just any synth, sampler & drum maschine tbf.
Some of the best.
I love using resonant HPFs on kicks and bass, paired with a little cut an octave above wherever the resonant peak is

Sweet track. This has motivate me to do more live loops with my synths
I use a small case with Queen of Pentacles and Ground Control with support utilities for my mobile modular rig along with ALM Super Coupe so good!
The one and only synth I won’t sell. Such a great groovebox, literally does everything, great for bass with its snappy envelopes
Hey, thanx for really showing the magic of this super intuitive workflow, very inspiring indeed!
Why I love the Octatrack + Machinedrum UW + Monomachine setup.
So far I have a 1010 Music Blackbox and a Korg Minilogue XD for a hardware setup; all I need is a drum machine and I'm set! Also looking into getting the Modal Electronics Aragon 8, that thing is sexy

You dont know the Tempest, it can sound like a prophet and like a brutal 909 at the same time.
@riky - perhaps at some point would be interesting to see your take on mobile synths and DAW to jam on the go
Thanks for the video, friend.
All you need to rock a party. I like it!
legend- like always. btw i need a desktop synth stand like the one u have for the pro3. what is that?
Would love to see your workflow for capturing these jams in your DAW, and arranging and mixdown.
RC202 is a nice inexpensive looper. The effects on it aren't the most expressive, but I've been really enjoying it. Combined with synths on the Circuit, and the flexibility of the TR-8S drum machine it's a really great combo. Great video Ricky.
A MPC X basically.
My set up: Synthstrom Deluge and /or MPC ONE, RE303.
Awesome video. I love the groove
Because these are what we are calling: Screan Reader and it avoids us to read out loud what is on the Screan and that is all thanks to the Voice that is guiding us through so many things and that is help us a lot Blind People!!!!!!******
always entertaining . and i learn something every time i watch
Very inspiring thanks! i m always looking for the simpliest and the more efficient set up in my music. here is a way , thanks again!
You can do this with one instrument too, the MC707
Hi Ricky! Could you please link the synth stand you are using here? Thanks!
Just recently re-watched Super 8. Fantastic film 🙌
Great vid as always, Ricky! I might have to pull the Octatrack back out 🤣
I REALLY like your videos. I'm a Hop Hop head in its truest form. Your videos inspire ✨️ me to do music again. I have been listening to what's called Hip Hop on a few streaming services and it does not make me want to create. Your videos do. Thank you. 😊
Lovely set as always!
next time it would dope with your small modular with drum machine and a sampler, think you could cook some fire with that combo. love what you do, keep it up, much love from Denmark
The classic line from anyone who has ever used a Tempest, 'I don't know why its doing that, but it sounds kinda cool..'
that pro3 patch is lovely.
AGREED, GOOD SIR.
thats how we´ve worked in the 90ies :-)
Super 8 is one of my fav movies. Good recommendation
Had a microkorg back in the day. One of the most meditative experiences of all time.
dude your a genius. respect.
would you ever consider releasing this track? i like to come back to your videos often and i had not the best morning but this melody has me feeling alright about myself and life.
Man, I love Compact Creations...
Love this!!! Yessir! Thanks Ricky!
Excellent video!!!, a questiom could korg electribe 2 replace the drum machine and the sampler? Thanks.Cheers from Argentina!!
when will you review the deluge?
The Tempest is an incredible machine ❤️ I love mine
Nice combo but I would prefer a dedicated sampler like my Z4 (no built in sequencer) an analog poly, analog mono and a hardware sequencer for my minimum DAWLESS setup.
My regular studio includes three hardware samplers, a few digital/analog synths and hardware sequencers.
I have a great sample, a great synth and a clone of an iconic drum machine, all the right tools, But I'm such a newb to working in this hardware medium so I feel so handcuffed by my own lack of skills, but I just have to keep digging and trying and learning. I know when I crack it this rig will be such a powerhouse, hahaha. so far its me scratching my head a lot, haha
can u do a video on the tempest? love it
It would be awesome for comparison's sake for you to do the same song on the circuit rhythm accompanied by Take 5 and to see to what extent the Rhythm can and cannot do what the Octatrack could do here.
Always love your videos Ricky.. My friend Stephen needs his Tempest back now :D ♥♥♥
Based on the title you could say that all one would need then is the OP1. Sampler, drum machine, synth and a 4 track recorder as a bonus :)
Two other things: Cloverfield...weird movie. And your contrast is looking so much better on these grades. The blacks are especially good.
What do you think of the MPC Keys 61. It seems to have the sampler, synth and drum machine in one. Could you use that alone for a live set? Would you bring a Digitakt or second box along?
