- Many of the children in Cambodia's orphanages have at least one living parent, who sent them away in the hope that they can get a better education, lift themselves out of poverty and lead a better life. But these dreams were shattered amid allegations of exploitation and mistreatment.
Thousands of these children have since been sent home and reunited with their families. Rogue orphanages have been shuttered, crippled by stringent regulations and the end of a lucrative industry dubbed orphanage tourism during COVID-19.
Meet the children who suffered the pain of separation, only to face a life of hardship, forced labour and abuse - wounds that continue to rankle. We also track down a former orphanage director to show us what happens behind the closed doors of these institutions.
