One of the best things about living in China is the food.... it just tastes so good.
One of the worst things about living in China is also the food..... it just tastes so good, which is why I need a gym membership, why I decide to go on a diet at least three times per year, and why my suit jacket feels just that little bit tighter after every single Chinese festival!

You most certainly cannot travel anywhere at any time in Mainland China and this young foreigner will easily find that out if he ever tries traveling around China long enough.
A lot of that is for his own safety and a lot of that is for China's safety.
Like anywhere else on earth, there are definitely dangerous places in China where foreigners can and do get stabbed to death, beaten up, drugged, mugged etc.
Outside of criminal dangers there are plenty of unsafe places in terms of buildings, electrical dangers, fire dangers, severe traffic dangers and food dangers.
Like most countries on earth it depends on who you are, where you are, what time, what you might be doing.
As a fairly strong rule, most foreigners are doing foreigner things in safer areas where they aren't involved in dangerous places or people.

There is one reason you like to live in China is that there are 56 ethnic groups of people living in harmony without causing internal strife as in other countries where discrimination of different ethnic groups of people constantly generate fighting and killing. The Chinese people don't talk bad about other country or interfere with their domestic affairs. Also Chinese people like to have family members together to share happiness. Lastly you can freely join the housewives square dancing in the evening at the park or sidewalk to relax and enjoy. You don't see this anywhere in the world.

Ever since I first visited China in 2006, I am just amazed the speed of changes in cleanliness, transport, the abundance of food choices. Most of it is for better. On going improvement in almost I'mIliterally walk anywhere at anytime reasonable time of the nite and not for one moment
I felt my safety being compromised. I was more worried walking in down town London.
