First 5 gallon brew day is complete. Did a doppelbock with 18.5 pounds of grain. Efficiency was what you’d expect at 65%. I’m thinking a brew bag will make a huge difference for smaller batches. Overall I was impressed with the system. That’s a beast of a heating element!
Thanks for this awesome video Brian. I own and use the Anvil 6.5 Foundry and love it. After watching your video I decided to upgrade to the Anvil 18 Foundry. Most importantly Anvils quality is first rate and their price point can't be beat. Definitely looking forward to using it and watching more of your videos. Thanks again!
Anvil is best in class for value to cost imo. With blichmann and Palmer behind it you know they will have their bases covered. I have nothing bad to say about their products. Also, if there is something that could be improved, you know they will listen and get it done. Cheer from out east Brian. Hope all is well.

We have the 10.5 and it is a great system. Waiting for a few reviews from you and will probably pull the trigger on it mid 22. We really want a system to brew 10 gallon batches. Thanks for a great review and looking forward to more.
Great video. I was wondering if you have used any of the false bottoms in any of Anvils electric systems? I have the 10.5 set up and have been wondering if the false bottom is worth spending the money on. Thanks
Brian, Thank for more great info. I just received my 18 and I'm going to test then brew this week. If you said any this, I missed it........ I have been looking to upgrade to electric and it might be the unit I am looking for. 3 vessels system with propane is great but cleaning is a long process and also this unit seems to be great to do also 5 gallon batch..looking forward to see more videos about it. Great job on this video !!!
Who says size doesn't matter? This rig looks legit. That false bottom though! I notice the Brew Easy false bottom drains a little slow, but I manage to keep the element covered while mashing. No beer bongs or chugging while mashing. Anvil just went yard with this one. Cheers Brofessor.
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers I don't mind. IT really does work well, though not well enough for a autosparge. As long as the wort comes clear that is the point. I did notice a slight improvement by adding oats to my grain bill. I didn't need the orifices, or is it orafae? I might have to try to duplicate that false bottom design, not to resell, but to have a false bottom for my Micro Spike Nano rig. I like how well it works.
Great review. Nice to see all these new gadgets that are coming out. Price is real reasonable. When I decide to downsize to a 1 vessel system, I'll have to think about purchasing one. Cheers!
Will take two men and a boy to lift that full grain basket . I like the 10.5 but am already seeing quality issues after about a years use. Liquid behind the display . So much so I had to use silicone to seal it...hopefully. This is a huge contender with the GF S40. Curious who will win the race. Good general review Brian. Looking forward to some real time use.
Just thinkn about jumpn into this. Which system would you buy if you had to choose one? Size? And Simplicity of use? Batch size i do around 6 into primary to end with 5 in a keg.
Looks good but I love my brewzilla 65l it'll be interesting to see how this works. I wasn't expecting much with the brewzilla for the price but the last two years have been rock solid knock on wood. But if it takes a poop I'd consider this unit. I do like the wort chiller much more than the brewzilla unit and the design of the malt pipe which is genius. I personally don't like the controller being able to stage the heating element just because if you get into a situation where you need to run less or more power especially during the mashing process it kind of scares me. I'm also pretty simple and think that's just something to add to the probability of breaking. I can't wait to see what happens when you use this unit. Thanks again for the great content
No doubt the brewzilla is a great system..I actually liked it better than the 35L. I do still have my 65L. Maybe I didn't explain it properly but it is really easy to dial.in the amount of power on the Foundry.

Hi Brian, Love your vids. The measurements for the 18 you mentioned don’t add up :(. The only measurement I need (for my hoist) is “From the bottom of the kettle (the floor) to the extended lift handle of the pipe in order for the pipe to clear the kettle. This would permit the removal of the pipe for the boil, with the hoist. ? Is that your DIY steam condenser? Also what’s your take on the whirlpool attachment? Thanks Ken
Lol I thought about that measurement..I'll find out what it is and let you know..I haven't used the whirlpool arm just yet, but I'll be using it soon. 👍🍻
Have Second gen 10.5 (controller still on bottom) and been waiting for this but I have to stop and think do I want this or would I be better off getting a second 10.5. With the exception of high gravity beers where a bigger malt pipe would come in handy having two 10.5's would give me the ability to brew a two different style beers on the same day instead of 10 gallons of the same style. Yes I can doctor up a 10 gallan batch into two 5 gallons and have two different beers but not two entirely different styles that a 10.5 would provide and it seems to be overkill to do a 5 gallon batch. This is of course my personal thoughts having a 10.5 already and I might think different if i did not have any system.
I can't remember about the 10.5 but I covered the 18 with a 10 gallon batch in this video. th-cam.com/video/b2nycv_MWNc/w-d-xo.html Truthfully your ground water temp.id a huge factor in how quickly the included chiller will cool the wort down. 👍🍻
Not really a true comparison. They are different types of systems. The clawhammer is modular, with most parts of it being serviceable the foundry does not have serviceable eyebrows etc. You have to be the judge on that extra grand. Both will make great wort! 👍🍻.
Thanks for the review... thinking about going for it and pre-ordering one of these. Afraid that it will not actually ship in January though. Last year I tried to get the Anvil 10.5 and paid and all that then it ended up backordered for months. Anyway, do you have a equipment profile for this 18 gallon version. Or have any suggestions on a similar system to use as a starting point. I use BeerSmith but should be able to plug in the numbers if you have a suggested one to start from whether it is Brewfather or whatever. Thanks for any additional feedback. Love your videos. Thomas
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers I pulled the trigger yesterday evening and pre-ordered direct from the Anvil website. I got the swirly arm and recirculating options even though I already have a couple of new riptide pumps. I plan to make an extension cord and a way to hookup where the dryer is connected. Watched your video on the cords too. I was brewing extract and steeping on the stove, then the mash and boil 7 gal and now using the mash and boil for partial grain brews. This will step me up to all grain. I brew some 10% beers so figured this would help me get there. Next purchase I think will be a Spike Flex+ fermenter and try pressure fermentation. It's an interesting product, but I still baffled by their decision to use that 4000W 20 amp plug type instead of a 30 amp 14-30 or L6-30. Not only is it handicapped in power usage, to use it, I'd have to find a 14-30 to 6-20 adapter. I may pass on this.
Yeah I see your point. It's not "handicapped* though. A 30 amp plug isn't going to "give it more power" it's only going to draw just over 16 amps anyway. The cord should match the power requirements IMO. Each their own though.
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers I agree on the plug matching the power consumption. That’s wasn’t my point. 16 amps “only” draws 3840 Watts instead of a higher draw based upon 5000 or 5600 W (7200 theoretical) from a 30 amp . Wouldn’t that affect heating time? Was just wondering why they would have just went with a higher heating element with the 6-30 configuration since it’s a 240v system.
Nope it doesn't do anything to "over power" a system it only draws what it draws. If you have a really long distance (over 100') then you would see a voltage/amperage drop but not with the length of cord it has.
The Brew Commander I think that's what you are referring to is made to handle a multitude of wattages from 3750 up to 5000 so it needs a plug to match those parameters.
@@BEERNBBQBYLARRY I don't think Anvil based their choice of heating elements on the plug. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that it was the other way around. 4kW only draws 16.6A @ 240v. The 6-20p is conservatively rated at 20A@250V -aka 5kW .
