As a backyard farmer, I have been raising and selling Red Wigglers and NIghtcrawlers for about 8 years and have to say... It's been at the top ten fun, fulfilling, educating, hilarious, times of my 67 yrs. I love the worms, the dirt, and my customers and had an absolute blast! I've since moved and it's slow to start again, but that's okay. Long Live Worms! I enjoy your videos Capt. Matt, thank you!

Great presentation. Great conference! If you are into vermiculture, or just seriously curious about worming, I highly recommend you attend this conference next year. This year was the first, but definitely not the last. I learned so much, and made some great connections in the worm farming community!

Well Sir, I've been watching you for over a year now. I started a 5 gallon bucket this past Spring. I got a little batch of castings of which I added to my small tub gardens. I know have a couple gallons of good castings and started a 20 gallon tote about a month ago. Things are going well here with ky tiny set up and hope to have much more next spring. I have learned so much from you and look forward to all that comes my way. I know I am just a beginner, as we all are at one point, but I have Faith that my little worm farm will one day will grow into a massive casting production farm! Thank you Captain Matt! And all those in this Vermaculture Adventure!

Captain Matt- you are my hero!!
I am newish to vermicomposting/ culture and it sorta accidentally happened due to my curiosity and going down the rabbit hole!
I am a new florist and wanted to grow a garden of my own flowers - heirloom roses and other uncommon flowers. I knew nothing about growing and what the flowers need beyond the basic sun and water. I dug in (figuratively) and that lead me to soil science and natural fertilizers and these things called worm castings. From there, I started listening to soil micro biome lectures and found that my soil needed lots of work. It was simply filler sand mixed with clay. That said, I dug out all my existing soil beds down three feet to bedrock. At that time I already understood I needed worms to aerate my garden, so I carefully dug out my soil by hand and rescued each and every worm by using a screen. I added them to a simple 5 gallon Home Depot bucket with some compost, leaves and watermelon (anyone that says only the four known composters will eat and compost are missing out in my opinion, my epigeic and endogeic worms ate the leaves and watermelon within a weeks time. Not kidding).
From there I wanted to bring even more worms to the garden(s) and I made a few underground pass through worm huts.
Winter in the foothills of the PNW can get pretty cold so I didn’t want my epi dudes to die, so brought them in and now they live in the garage. However, I have also purchased a true bunch of red worms to compost and breed with.
Funny story, before any of this, I had zero idea that the Lumbricus Terristeris were even part of our ecosystem!!. My husband had told me about ‘these foot long worms’ from Texas. I had thought that a worm would not get any bigger than my pinky (that seemed huuuuge). I didn’t believe him. Google changed that. Then one night after I finished my three month long soil project in which I had added some organic steer manure, I was outside in my garden late and the big worms were everywhere… Mating. I have even rescued young LT’s that I am raising in a hand made four foot bin (rigged to be this tall and is stacked so they can burrow) and they are doing fantastic!
Now I want to grow food with my castings. Try to convince local gardeners to use castings… etc etc
Thank you for all of your videos. Your way of explaining things is easy to understand.

I've said this over a dozen times to friends and family... "Imagine every person had a worm bin". We've evolved from nothing to a "green bin" here in Canada so why not the next step. Worms on a small scale take extremely little effort. We just need to educate people on how to do it properly. Every school that grows a bean from a plastic cup should have a worm farm to composite it.

    • @CaptainMattsWorms
      @CaptainMattsWorms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Exactly… a worm bin can vastly reduce waste processing - and create microbiological rich soils in houseplants and gardens. The time has come.

Wow, what a great talk! You're really good at it! And I think I needed to hear this "worm pep talk". I've been pretty sick lately and feeling really down on my luck and myself, feeling like an absolute failure. But my worms and I do wonderful work together, and I'm sure they don't think of me so ill. I hope to one day spread the message (and the poo!) like you do, Captain Matt. It really is the solution we should all be looking towards.

Captain Matt you are da man so inspiring with such a wonderful optimistic gentleman who enjoys teaching and you took so many words out of my mouth on your views and vision and I too share your vision we are at a year and a half with 2 paychecks $1200 divided by 2 we need money but we are doing the right thing and if I can help people stay away from doctors and pharmacies by helping them including farmers put back all the minerals and nutrients needed to make us a healthier species again not lead down a road filled with prepackaged food that has no benefit to our body. I thank you for teaching inspiring and helping me with my dream of making a living( at some point lol) by helping good folks wanting a healthier life family. I wish I was paying attention I’m in north alabama I would have been there to meet you and Jude he’s growing up which makes me feel older lol I came to the conclusion that my punch list will keep me busy until I shed this human shell and move to the next part of my journey and I’m only 55 lol

hey matt, i'm a widow, 71, with a garage full of worms, mostly anc's. my family thinks i'm nuts (no support). the anc's are producing more castings than i can use. unbelievable! your words are so inspiring but i really feel stuck. when you present your castings do you get into bacterial or fungal subjects? have you had your castings analyzed for npk? what do you say to sell your castings? also i don't see the link for bagging and banners etc you mentioned. thanks so much

Talking worms with a room full of interested people is a blast. We actually have a Worm Zoom call twice a month over at the WormPeople.com discussion forum - which gives a similar experience.
Conferences are great and we'll keep you up to date of when they happen... But costly to travel. Video conference wins in my book.

I am puzzeled...A course screen to catch the big stuff, and a fine screen to catch the cocoons...and a single galvanized bucket to empty the screens into? Shouldnt the cocoons be put in their own bin? decided to comment at about the 19-20 minute mark...
