From Google: "Salamander tapping of a blast furnace is the final tap after the furnace is blown down in order to drain the last liquid iron from the furnace hearth. Because of its rare occurrence a salamander tap represents for most companies a special job which requires a lot of preparation." This explains why they were posing for photos.
@@joeylawn36111 yeah. Its a once a 10/15 year job. Tekes weeks to prepare to do it the way they did here. Here in belgium we drain the iron into special concrete lined rail cars. Wich all have to be prepared and dried out. Sand has to be placed correctly to prevent iron sticking to concrete. Most other places drain the iron into sand pits on the ground. Wich then have to be cleaned out, delaying the start of the repairs
This particular group actually knows this job verry well. Its a pretty big part of what they do. They specialise in salamander tapping and demolishing blast furnaces or just removing hot burden and staves

insane tought that this place is now abandoned and you can literally walk there where it all happened, sad that everyone lost their jobs there though!
Insane and very dangerous.

They have to go through all that every time they tap the furnace????
No, only during furnace refection or repairs.
