  • If your RXP or RXT hood doesn't stay open, you're not alone! We show off a cheap way to fix it, as well as the process you have to do to change the "gas spring" to the best of my camera operating abilities.
    Turns out that a 2007 Infiniti M35 Hood lift support is the same size and lift capacity as the very expensive OEM part, Dramatically cheaper, Plus locally available at any auto parts store.
    In a lot of cases, you'll even get the exact same brand. I've seen several Suspa brand gas springs used on Sea-doos.

    This was very helpful. I ended up using a crown bar anchored deep inside above the lift support and pushed down to get it to where I could pop in the rod into the hood.

      Excellent!
      Compressing the strut to get everything back together can be a real pain but you won't get hit in the head by the hood crashing down anymore!

    That metal plate happens to have a square notch cut out which a 3/8 ratchet extension will fit in perfectly.. Instead of the vice grips you can just take a ratchet with extension and compress the shock very easily. Great video!

      WOW I had no idea. Awesome tip, thanks for sharing! I just purchased a 05 RXP in dire need of some love, still not sure 100% what I'll do with it, but you should hopefully be seeing it on the channel as soon as I get freed up enough to start making some videos again!

      I've done this B4 so I know that this is great info. Just a small correction. You need a 1/2" drive ratchet not a 3/8" and don't use an extension. Just a half inch drive ratchet will do. Thanks for sharing!

    • @jackstehle474
      @jackstehle474 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brandons9775 While sitting on the ski go to the right side and under the hood you'll see a metal plate above the shock. The shock attaches to this plate.. You'll see a slot about an inch and a quarter long . If you take a 1/2 inch drive ratchet with no socket on it and stick it in that slot, You can compress the shock very easily and this will allow you to attach the hood. Good luck.

    Thanks for uploading this. Was able to fix my front storage shock with the help of your video. For anyone else who may be struggling getting the snap ring off the top, you can instead take out the bolt on the metal plate that holds the same metal rod in place. That's what I had to do and it worked like a charm. Getting the bolt back in took a bit of elbow grease but was completely doable with a second set of hands on a 1/2" rachet compressing the shock.

    Great find!.. for those who are having trouble with the vise grips what I just did was place the vice grips exactly how its shown in the video but I moved the rod on the correct side for putting it through the opening and used the weight of the hood to push it down with just enough space to put my arm in and hold the vise grips down as I pulled the hood up the rod slowly comes up as well and then just push it into place was super easy rather than trying to use brute force on the grips. Thanks for the video I ordered the exact same thing for my 2005 sea doo wake

      Some of the brackets also have a little slot that either a 3/8 or 1/2 inch square drive ratchet will fit into, I forget which size, but that can make it drastically easier, but it seems like not every bracket has that slot if my memory serves me, in which case your method is an excellent idea!

      I'm afraid that the RX may use a different style, I am not 100% sure, but it seems like it uses the style that bolts on instead of this style that uses the ball socket attachment. there may be a possibility of swapping the ends on the gas shock but I'm not confident enough to say one way or the other.

      @trythistv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a look at your bracket, some have a little slot you can fit either a 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet into, I don't recall which it is, but that is an excellent way to compress the shock a bit, I think it's a 3/8 ratchet, and the slot is rounded on the ends so it's not super obvious that's what it's for

    • @mikemalone3584
      @mikemalone3584 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fixed it! Couldn’t get it to compress and then I noticed that someone had moved the base grommet back a bit which was making it harder. Soooo, I took the screws off the base grommet and then was able to pull/slide the base plate into a good spot, then used a hammer drill to put the screws into fresh holes. Wasn’t the ways described here, but it worked!

    • @trythistv
      @trythistv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it works, it works! I know some of the lower brackets were put in weird places at the factory that caused the gas spring to pop off when the hood was closed, and a lot of people redrilled where they would be straight, it could be someone did that but had a weak gas spring that would compress easier.
