Hey Federico ! I have an idea for a video. Could you do a video on how to build a watch collection ? Maybe come up with a good 7, 10 or 12 piece collection that ranges from entry level watches to luxury. Also, I would like to know your ideas on a good 3 piece luxury watch collection. Great video always. Cheers !
Although, brands which retain value usually start from rolex and then move upwards in price but its interesting to note that some low end watches also retain value such as certain limited edition g shocks or certain models of seiko even
That's true. Particularly when Seiko discontinued a model, prices shoot up quickly. Even some plastic permanently dead Swatches with unusual artistic designs can sell for hundreds and even thousands of dollars.
@@levedia This isn't really true. Speedmasters and Semasters are readily available for 50-66% of retail used... But they do hold value better than a lot of other watches
Most people confuse the value of their piece as to what they are selling for on various mediums...unfortunately if you ever have to cash out of your pride and joy then expect a minimum of 25% reduction if using a dealer he has to make money it's their business and selling privately is fraught with scammers ....unless you know the buyer...this applies probably to 99% of watches...if you are not planning to sell then the price is of it is irrelevant ..just enjoy your piece whatever its value ...
I have a steel no date Rolex Submariner, and even IF I had the $$$ for a gold Submariner...I probably would still choose the steel version. No disrespect to any GOLD owners...that just my personal preference.
with selling smart u can try to reduce the change of losing much money as much as possible, but i Always expect to loose a bit later, maybe not to much though
I am seriously in doubt about watch profits and hype, bought in Vegas April 2018 a supposedly 170k MSRP Patek at a discount for 112k, sold it to same store 15 months later for 68k when I traded to buy another supposedly hot watch. The salesman bothered to try to offend me by saying watches are not worth as much now because everyone has a cell phone.
I'm selling an Omega Geneve 18k with manual movement right now. It's a 1974 years model. It's in very good condition so I'm a little surprised that only a few guys have shown interest yet. I'm glad to read that you need to have patience when you sell the watch...Any ideas how to think when you sell your watch...?
Ciao Federico, quando dici "the 41 mm do better than the 36's" intendi che ai 41mm vi si applicano maggiori sconti, o che mantengono meglio il valore? Io l'ho intesa come la prima opzione ma ci vuole una tua conferma. Grazie!
You could make the same argument for anything from cars to clothing to anything else. If you see a luxury watch, the work and the attention to details would make the owner feel like a million dollars.
You know what? You gotta buy what you like in the first place. If you want some investment options you can try real estate, stock-holding, online trades etc
Great video and on the money, no pun intended. Got my BLNR just over a year ago retail, no discount and could not be happier. Doubt I will sell but its better than having that money in a bank account if I wanted to get out of it
Thats the going rate. I had a 3 month wait last Jan when I ordered (was told 12) but from what I can tell dealers arent taking any more names for lists and Ive got a feeling the BLNR is discontinued going by the booklets Rolex were handing out at Baselworld this year where it was missing from everything. But if you buy at 8 or 9 and it keeps going up you still make money.
Great video, and people should stop that "buy what you like" comment, it's misleading and irresponsible. You may be correct if giving suggestions to someone buying a watch that cost a week's salary, but for people buying their first luxury piece, they should really consider the resale value. Watching youtube reviews dont make you an expert, and your taste may turn out to be disastrous. Do your research and make informed decisions.
I've noticed you can get Omega Constellation Globemasters heavily discounted too. Just as Fed said, supply vs. demand, it's a bargain if the globemaster is to your tastes
Sorry for my ignorance but... What happened to Longiness, Hublot & Tag Heuer? ?? I even thought watches from these other brands could been even considered as 'investments'... Guess I was totally wrong 😲
Richard Mille are fashion watches for wealthy people who don't know much about watches and certainly don't care how much they'll lose when it comes to selling them. AP offshore for me.
Nice video Federico, taking the time to frame things for newer viewers(thanks!)... I wonder if you could comment on or make a video on Rolex Steel Blue SD. Is it going to continue to stay high premium versus MSRP? It’s not as new as the BLRO yet it seems like no place ever has it at retail price yet there’s way less talk about it.
Hi Federico. I had a Corum gold coin watch back in the 1980's and sold it in tough times. I love the watch and want to buy another one. What do you think of Corum, particularly the gold coin watches. Are they high horology? Any problems with them? Thanks so much. Love the show.
How does the Rolex Explorer and Air King hold up??? I thought about getting the Submariner but have the Breitling Super ocean 44. So I kind of wanted a different style rather than another dive watch
Great video Federico, like always. The resale price is a good point to buy a watch, but if you like a watch... buy it and dont stop you. Take your time when buy a watch, is the best you can do.
Hey, Federico, great Video! Could you tell me a reliable website, where you can see the price development of certain watches over time? Thanks for advance and also the time and effort you put in your videos!
Holding value is not the same or can be equated to what you desire. Watches should be what you desire to own and wear. If you buy to resale, then be a watch salesman.
Nice video, though if ones aim in watch collection is to make money, it's probably better to just buy precious metals, stocks, government bonds or shares. Watch collection no longer become pleasurable if making or retaining money is the goal. A true watch collector buys the watch he or she loves not the one that makes a profit. İt's nice if you can, but that should not be the ultimate aim. Buy what you love, wear what you buy, don't keep it in a safe in the bank and visit once a month to wind it.
Thanks Federico for putting this together today. I know you did the livestream with Jory today too. You're a busy man. Anyway, I think you should have spent just a little time with watches that are retaining value in some of the other brands where the brand itself is not. I would like to know that information too.
Why? I was interested in a Rolex Submariner, went to the AD, used all the tricks to get on top of the waiting list but still they told me that it's gonna be at least a 5 month wait. So I went to a gray dealer and payed over MSRP and got it within 1 week. If you have the cash and don't mind spending it there is no problem with paying a premium to get things faster. If you start losing your shit over a thousand dollars you're definetly not the target audience for high-end watches.
@@arcuz7862 That just means you bought a pre-owned watch that was overvalued. I agree with Steven, it is silly, but your money, do what you want at the end of the day.
Hmmm informative video!👍👍! Nice watch too u have on too, the Seiko?...is it available with a leather strap @ how much? Then again what's the craze about Richard Mille watches😱
Most channels today talk about the monetary value ? Guys those watches are bought to be enjoyed, i dont care if that watch loses 99% of its value once i am out the door, i worked so hard to buy it and enjoy it, not to sell it
Hi Federico, We all know how much value new watches loose. How about vintage or maybe "not that vintage just pre-owned " watches? It seems like you are not going to loose all that much buying 1980s AirKing for like 2 or K$ ? Or some pre owned Tag or Longines or some other respectable brand. Am I wrong or do they seem like, maybe not the investment, but at least a safe haven for your money?
Yes, every 5 to 8 years automatic/mechanical watches need to be serviced. I'm not sure about the watches with ETA movements or at the same price range, as the service charge is around $400 - 1000, which is sometimes the cost of new watch like Hamilton with ETA movement.
Federico. I love your videos and i think the topics you cover are really interesting and you clearly know what your talking about. Theres just one thing tho.. you need to up your game! get a better set, better camera, better editing and try to show a few watches live instead of slapping a picture of it in the video. Look at unboxtherapy for example. the set they have with the lights and camera.. the clean look.... watchfinder&co.. and so on. I love watching your videos and i get so pissed at all the potential this channel has that isnt being explored. i wish you the best of luck and meant no offense.
Good video Sir On point about Rolex except when you said Gold Rolex sports for $30k A new entry level Gold Rolex Sports starts at about $34,250 plus tax So if you live in New York like I do that works out to just under $40K for a new Gold Submariner
Hey Federico !

Omg, this Richard Mille is just heinous
"You'll get bigger discounts than shopping at WalMart!" LOL. Great video.
Vintage is always a good choice as well. They have already depreciated and will probably only go up from that point.
My low cost, used and a little banged up Seiko Sarb033 is worth about what I paid for it.
New comer to the horology game, soaking up the knowledge.
Buy what you love.
This is very true. So many people don't, they buy a brand irrespective of whether they actually really like the watch, just because of the hype.
My problem isn't buy what I love its the cost of the watch.
Easy to say as a 9-5 worker, being self employed means you may have to liquidate assets at some point.
Short, plain and the best advice ! 👌
Basically ,yes. But its not the point of the video. Consider of investment sight
I have a steel no date Rolex Submariner, and even IF I had the $$$ for a gold Submariner...I probably would still choose the steel version. No disrespect to any GOLD owners...that just my personal preference.
Buy smart, enjoy, have patience then sell smart
Gucci Glamounara correct.. this is if you buy it in the normal way but not smartly
with selling smart u can try to reduce the change of losing much money as much as possible, but i Always expect to loose a bit later, maybe not to much though
The werewolf sure.. sometime you have to pay a little bit for your enjoyment instead of loosing half of the price for example
Mohammed Alyafei agree
yeh exactly thats why i avoid brnads like breitling nowadays..
Just bought a explorer 2 with white dial new

Can't go wrong with an old stalwart like the Casio Classic F91W-1. Owned a couple. And make great gifts. Should go into the Watches Hall of Fame.
Compare the normal Tissot gentleman & Tissot gentleman powermatic. Which one has a resell value?
Does tissot value appreciate every year?

What about Vacheron Constantin? I am surprised you did not mention those. I personally think that the holy trinity of watches s by old all hold value.
Historique and Overseas both lose about 20% after purchase, so do you mean if you buy used, it will appreciate over time?
Vintage Omega 18k. Gold Seamasters and Constellations. Only going up.
Yup suprised he didnt mention that. Man on the moon going up as well
Thanks for being so honest.. most not an investment....so why spend fortunes?....and at the end of the day they all tell the time!
You could make the same argument for anything from cars to clothing to anything else. If you see a luxury watch, the work and the attention to details would make the owner feel like a million dollars.
Yes, shouldnt look at a watch as an investment, but having it hold value or even increase in value is a big plus.
New to collecting. You’re videos are great and helpful. Thank you!!
Hi Frederico, can you make a similar video for Omega, JLC, Vacheron, Cartier watches that hold value?
You can buy a used two-toned Rolex GMT / Sub / Daytona at a lower price than used all-steel models.
Buy what you like. If you don't intend to sell it, there is no loss.
You know what? You gotta buy what you like in the first place. If you want some investment options you can try real estate, stock-holding, online trades etc
What's your opinion about Sinn ? I really like their watches specially the Dialpal technology

what is your opinion on the new 2018 Rolex 2tone submariner ...which has a 1 year waiting list in the UK. do you think they will increase?

Great episode as usual, very informative 👍⌚️
Federico, want to ask if Explorer II black dial holds value. Also what's the brand name of you polo shirt.

Would you include a longe & soehne in this list? Any specific model?
Where did you get that piece of art from?
Used steel Rolex sports watches sell for higher prices than the same watches in 2-tone steel/gold.
Rolex, Patek and especially Richard Mille are overvalued right now, paying over MSRP is just a bit silly.
It will never stop lol, they've built a legacy. Same as Porsche, McLaren and Ferrari are going above MSRP now

Better than a lot of other brands but not great... The saxonia is the worst performer.

What do you think about the Royal Oak Chronographs?
If you buy Panerai used does it hold pre owned value well?
Used, fairly well.
Another great video and just followed your Instagram page now too (congrats on the CLS!), cheers from Dubai.
Sometimes it's not just the price of the SS vs PM but the tool appeal of the SS models.

But what about H.Moser &Cie? It is really rare and rarely mentioned having outstanding quality///
They dont hold great value.
Where do we stand on Vacheron Constantin?
I think they are WAY nicer than AP and always wonder why it isn't as sought after as PP.
What say you Fed?
Not much demand. Great watches. They hold value decently depending on the model.
Been considering an Overseas Simple-Date next time I'm in Zurich....
I like the Overseas collection WAY more than PP and especially AP.....
I like VC over PP and AP.
VC is definitely my fav of the holy trinity
what about Christiaan van der Klaauw watches I think they also retain their prices amazingly well

AP designs are so overrated, imho ... they are the first I would ditch from the traditional holy trinity.
So in summary, you need to splash a ton of cash to hold on to your stash!
Zodiac? I love em
Loving the horology poster! Where is it from?
Fed, do you think the ‘Holy Trinity’ brands all deserve to be there? Or do you think one should be replaced?

Golden Rolex loose lots of value. However gold in those watches is by far the most expensive in the world.
The value of gold in them is almost irrelevant... While they do lose lots of value, they loose less than most other gold watches (generally).
