Building a Dollar Tree Altoids EDC Survival Tin

  • First off- this is a LONG one! Feel free to skip around!
    DISCLAIMER This is not intended as instructional or professional. This is a video of a guy screwing around with a bunch of Dollar Tree stuff! Your gear, no matter how cheap or expensive, is only as useful as the knowledge you have to use it properly!
    It's been awhile since I did a tin, and I thought I'd give a go at an actual "survival tin". I have and carry several different EDC urban and Dad supply tins, but I've never gone after an actual survival one! I wanted to push what I could figure out and go the Dollar Tree route for a couple reasons. First, I love to challenge myself. Second, I already own a lot of actual camping, hiking, and survival gear, and don't want to go out and drop a bunch of cash. I've got kiddos, and I'm on a budget!
    This is more a "practice the theory" exercise, and I hope that it inspires folks out there to try something different! And LEAVE A COMMENT! What works, what sucks, whats a great cheap item I missed?
    Thanks as always,
    Conan_Lybarian

    Total spent was $26. Aside from picking up more tins, there's enough supplies here to make at least 5~ kits, depending on if you do the ridiculous duct tape carrier for it! Also, sorry about the repeat clip! 45 mins is a LOT to edit down to lol
    Things I wish I had grabbed:
    -Ramen pack for the bullion packet
    -Some drink mix (lemonade or electrolytes packets)

      Take some plastic soda straws, heat one end and seal it with a pair of pliers. You can put any kind of dry powdered product in it. Seal the open end the same way, then put those in the tin. They don't take up much room. Cut them to length to fit your tin. You can put instant coffee, cream or sugar in a straw, or even some kind of beverage. Salt, pepper or whatever you choose. Thanks for your video.

      @@tonyv8925 Absolutely! I've shown that in a couple other videos, but this would have been the perfect place for it again! Thanks for pointing it out!

    It's so much easier & neater to dip the match heads into a bottle of clear nail polish. You can do hundreds of matches in just a few minutes if you have a block of styrofoam to stick the matches on to dry. Nail polish is both waterproof & flammable.

    That is a great tin as it reminds us that we should take our troubles and hard situations to God first, usually we try and solve all our problems by ourselves when we should take them to the one who can really help us, great video btw 👍

    You gave me some good ideas for tins for myself. Although, I would be the type that does a tin for fire, a tin for sewing, a tin for water purification purposes, etc…you get the idea. But I also have a 4 tiered bento box that I am setting up for camping outdoors this summer. I can fix up a few of these tins and put them all in the bottom of my bento box. Thanks for all the suggestions. 😊

      I'm actually going to build a slimmed down edc tin, and then a few camping ones too. Slight redundancy in each (just matches and water tabs really) in case one gets lost or destroyed

    I feel like the best option for 'food' in an altoid size tin is the small individual wrapped airheads candy. Basically just a little flat package of sugar that you don't really risk crushing up. Starbursts are a decent option too, but those paper wrappers might makes a mess in the tin, if the candy were to start melting.
    If you had used a saw to cut off the excess handle instead of crimping the end off, I think you could have slid the candle down into the end of it.

    • @ConansEasyDadCarry
      @ConansEasyDadCarry  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're totally right! I probably could have focused a little more on that. I should have also grabbed like a powdered drink mix too! Probably should have grabbed a Ramen to steal the bullion package

    Years ago I created something I called the three minute match. It was a simple strike anywhere kitchen size match with a single square of toilet paper folded and tightly rolled around it. I tied the paper onto the match with dental floss and dipped it in melted wax and sealed it up in a vacuum food bag. I made many of these and one day I took one along fishing. I could not get it to light. Even though I had tried several of them when I made them the one sitting in a drawer for a few months refused to light. I came home and tried all the rest of them with the same result except for one that lit. I have not tried to "waterproof" matches with wax since then. Your milage may vary.

    Nice video. I challenged my self last year to build a tin that included a shelter, & I created a tin that included a 43-gallon contractor bag for shelter. I had to sacrifice food procurement items, but I was approaching it as a 24-hour kit, & food isn't really a priority for the first couple days.

    DT super glue comes in a larger, resealable container than the skin glue you got, and is also a great fire starting fuel. I've glued dried skin, bleeding cuts, and many other thing to other things, with that vial of SGlue. 👍

    • @ConansEasyDadCarry
      @ConansEasyDadCarry  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like them both for different reasons. Superglue is my usual go-to just because it's so quick, but I was trying to save some space here and show some options. I'm 100% with you though!

    Thank you for the tag..great video.. lol I think if your trying to survive on what’s in a tin you’ll need prayer 😂 so that’s a good selection lol but they are rather useful in the short term and no torniquete? Damn it I can’t get my SOFT-W in..I need a bigger tin!! Lol just busting balls..great kit..good items.. And a 46 minute video is impressive..I actually like tins to..your unusual carry challenge has me actually carrying a tin at work..I’m thinking of ideas for more tins actually..

    • @ConansEasyDadCarry
      @ConansEasyDadCarry  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lol yeah, there's only so much. I mean, you *could* do a paracord tourniquet, but then you using your "shelter"! I'd say cut off the limb with the scalpel, cauterize with the birthday candle, then eat your Starburst to feel more peppy! Excited to see what you do with a tin! It's almost a silly little thing, but I use my EDC Dad one *all the time*!
