Thank you Jack for a wonderful interview with Commander Stillwell. I had the good fortune to have a telephone conversation with the Commander when he was still serving at the Naval Institute. As I recall I had some questions in regards to the Iowa in particular and he indicated that his personal expertise was more in alignment with New Jersey and Missouri but he was able to answer my questions nonetheless. I am the proud owner of several of his books including Battleship Commander, New Jersey , Arizona , and Missouri all of which are fantastic books. He is truly a great Patriot and a terrific Author and scholar. I was also able to correspond with Commander Stillwell and still have his very cordial responses to this day. I hope he will be visiting New Jersey when she is in Drydock soon.
Thank you! I appreciate your great comment and will pass it along to Paul as well. I’m glad you liked the interview, we’ll definitely do a second part once the new version of his New Jersey books comes out next spring. -Jack
I ordered mine Battleship Commander the day it was announced, and before I even finished reading it, Mr Stillwell was scheduled to give a talk on BB-62. I couldn't make it because it was the Friday after Thanksgiving. After a few emails back and forth with Ryan, I ended up shipping my book there and about a week later I finished reading my now personally addressed and signed copy! It was a very enjoyable read and I always find Mr Stillwell to be an informative and entertaining speaker/interview/read. 😀
Holy crap, I just had a massive flashback, moment of panic. I served on the Iowa as a gunners mate in 16 inch turret 1. I lost a good friend Petty officer Stillwagon on April 19th. Then I saw the title for the video and I was momentarily confused because the names and ships are so close. Crazy thoughts went through my head like oh my god is he alive after all these years, is it his brother? When I calmed down I figured it out but man was that weird.
12:00 (Don't know if it's addressed at a later point, but I couldn't wait to find that out): There is another contemporary vessel, which is also one of the few Russian survivors from Tsushima. The cruiser Avrora, today a museum ship in St. Petersburg
Great point! Beautifully maintained. Just a quick historical note, but after getting badly shot up at Tsushima the Aurora limped into Manila, where she was interned and wore the US stars and stripes until repaired and released to return to Russia. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Most enjoyable.
Was lucky enough to visit Mikasa last year. Got a private tour from a board member. Contact them well in advance and maybe you can too.
