    I have an amount of old rangefinders. I buy them at thrift stores, or on flee markets and stuff. I just have them for show, so I clean them till they look okay, but I don't care if they are in working order. Videos like these inspire me to do more than cleaning and also repair them. Must feel great to make an old instrument working again, and take photograpfs with it. Thanks for inspiring me, and, nice work man!!

    The second lens element can be removed without marring any metal, I used a friction rubber tool with success. The trick was I flipped the camera on its face and pushed down firmly on the rubber tool which was kept from moving with my other hand, and simply turn left and you will feel the factory seal break.

    This video is great! Thanks for sharing. And thanks for all the comment replies, too. I’m learning just as much with those. I just bought my first Canonet, and I’m going to try to free up a sticky aperture ring (the ring itself is gummed up, but the blades seem to move fine). Another thing I noticed with mine, though, is that the shutter really needs to be pressed down all the way to fire - it needs every bit of button travel before it will take a picture. Is this an easy fix/adjustment? Thanks again!

I have everything functional again but as I'm putting it back together I'm not sure what ISO the camera was set at when I took it apart. Brilliant video. I just did this on a QL19. Shutter works now. Aperture will always close using aperture ring but won't reopen. I couldn't get to the mechanism like your video. QL19 quite different inside. Question is do I keep on cleaning blades and hope they open without me using tool or could there be a mechanical issue?

    • @wrldwar3
      @wrldwar3  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep cleaning them, it could take some time. It only takes a little bit of grime to make the blades stick. Once you get them clean, they should open and close easily. This is why the best practice is to remove them for cleaning. Of course, that takes a lot more effort. This method will work, but will take you some time. Good luck.

    Hi new sub,I got the older QL and I can't get the first locking washer out, wish I'd seen this vid first, I tried using lighter fluid through the self timer vent but I think I flooded it, it worked for awhile but I had used isopropyl alcohol first and I think it's stuck again once it dried, do you do repairs at all for these, it seems everything works except the shutter and aperture is stuck again.. Thanks

      @devonwarren5143 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You really need to get in there to clean it out. Like I mentioned, the "proper" way is to remove the blades, soak them and clean them. That being said, this method works too. Be patient and take your time if you attempt to do it yourself. The 1st ring is soft, thin metal. Be VERY careful with it.

    Hi, I have a 'New Canonet 28' from 1971 however there's a glass between the front lens and the shutter but I can't figure out how to get it out, seems to be retained by the focusing system assembly. Someone suggested taking the whole lens/shutter assembly out, do you know anything about this specific model? Thanks in advance for your help, love your videos!

    • @wrldwar3

      Taking out the whole lens assembly is the best way to get to both sides of the shutter. I never worked on a Canonet 28, but here is a link to the service manual. I hope this helps.

    Excellent video ... So ... to clarify ... proper aperture function is if the Aperature is like F/16 and you open it up to F/1.7 ... it will not and should not open until the shutter lever is cocked back? Mine does this and I've found this video thinking it was needing a cleaning or something. Would love to confirm this is proper function of this aperature. Thanks!

    • @wrldwar3
      @wrldwar3  ปีที่แล้ว

      With the shutter cocked: the aperture should open and close as you adjust it. When the shutter in not cocked: the aperture will close but will not open until you cock the shutter.

    Can not get my ql17 “lock washer” off for the life of me. I have the same silver spanner set as you. Any tips?

    • @wrldwar3
      @wrldwar3  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes they are REALLY tight, but you need to be very gentle. They are made out of thin metal that it very soft. Check to see if the filter ring is bent. If it is bent, you will need to straighten it before you can remove the lock washer. Next, check to see if the grooves are clean. Any dirt or build up will make the ring stick. You can also try a VERY small amount of lighter fluid around the edge of the washer to help loosen anything that may be holding it. Let the camera sit lens down for a while so that any dirt will run out of the camera and not inside.
      You can also try these tools instead of a spanner. Sometimes they work a lot better and you don't have to worry as much about scratching your camera.
      www.amazon.com/dp/B0013HFYKK/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_C.rtEbNCS9GV9
      The best advice I can give is to be patient. Take your time. Never rush or force anything. Sometimes leaving it for another day is the best thing to do. If you have a local camera repair shop, they may be willing to remove the ring for you for cheap or even free.
      Good luck and I hope this helps.

    Hello,are you know why if i set aperture to "Auto" , it won't "fire"? but if manual it can.

    • @wrldwar3
      @wrldwar3  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To use the auto mode, you need to have a battery in the camera, and the meter needs to be working. It won't fire if both things are not in place.

  • @davidsalazar4444
    @davidsalazar4444 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm working on my canonet now, and while I think i've loosened the blades sufficiently, when the aperture mechanism was gummed up, did you find that it was much easier to close the aperture than to open it? If so i'll know i just need to keep working it, but i'm worried that there's a larger mechanical issue behind it not opening very easily.

    • @wrldwar3
      @wrldwar3  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is the drawback of doing it this way instead of the "real" way, which requires the whole camera to be disassembled. It only takes a very tiny bit of dirt/oil to make the shutter of aperture stick. Makes sure you dry up any cleaning fluid as best as you can.

    Hi Devon,
    great video! I was looking for this as my shutter is stuck.
    Couple questions:
    1. You don't mention using any lubricant before reassembly. Is there a specific lube for the shutter and aperture?
    2. Would opening up from the inside and cleaning the shutter and aperture from the inside worth doing? and any plans to make a video teaching how to open and access the shutter from the inside?
    thank you!!

    • @wrldwar3
      @wrldwar3  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi,
      The shutter and aperture blades should be clean and dry. There should be no lubricant on the blades.
      Removing the lens assembly and completely cleaning both sets of blades is the "correct" way to clean them. This video is aimed at people looking to get there cameras working so they can enjoy shooting them. Also, with this method, there is less risk of messing something else up or reassembling the camera incorrectly. In my experience, it is not worth the extra effort unless cleaning the front side does not work.
      I hope this helps.
