I do consider myself a meatloaf master. I was managing a 50 seat cafe' back in the day and an old high school teacher of mine who had lost his dear wife in the previous couple years would come in. He was alone in the house so he would come in and have the specials on a very regular basis. When we had my meatloaf he was the first one in the door. He told me, "When I eat this meatloaf, I almost think my wife was still with us."
Now Kent, that almost got me to balling in the dining room cause I know how much he loved his departed wife. I can think of no other compliment that ever hit me as hard as that one! I fought back the tears and thanked him from the bottom of my heart. But I do think this one I am gonna' have to try. I only wish Bob were still around so i could give him some.....
Thank you for this recipe and bringing me back to that wonderful memory of Bob Root.

My mom made a good meatloaf. One time I asked her for the recipe and she just smirked and said she didn't use one, just dumped stuff in a bowl. I asked if it would be a huge trial for her to hold a measuring cup under while she dumped stuff. She never did do it and I can't make it like she did. One odd thing she added though, was liquid smoke, so this smoked meatloaf makes sense to me. I cooked in restaurants for years so I can make meatloaf for 40 people, but I can't make one for one or two people. Can't get the seasoning or ingredient ratio right.

There's something magical about every family's meatloaf recipes! It's a dish that entails family history, emotion, memory, and the evolution of growing up. A lotta kids don't like it when they're young, then it becomes a nostalgic comfort food. If it doesn't become a nostalgic comfort food? You have some deeper issues to heal, and for that I'm sorry. Heck, I grew up eating my mom's turkey meatloaf (insert grimacing face emoji), and even though I wouldn't make it myself, I'll eat it anytime she makes it with a smile on my face, and a flood of childhood memories floodin back. Guess what I'm sayin is that meatloaf is magic! It's simple, it's delicious, it's healthy, and for many, it's like a palatable memory book of flavors, smells, and nostalgic childhood goodness! I have to get a smoker ASAP and try this recipe, along with all your other smoker recipes on this epic channel! Thanks Kent and Shannon!

Bud Woodman I would love to go back to those times even though we had to get up and go to the tv to change the 3 channels we had on the tv. Raise the hood on a car and we could see the ground. We had some of the best country music to listen to. Had good food in the school cafeteria instead of the junk food they feed kids now. I know because my wife works in the school cafeteria. There wasn’t many fat people back then either. I would take times over all of this technology we have now. We live in a world of gadgets now. Even cars are filled up with gadgets.

You were also right about the cafeteria food, it was tasty. I also remember the '3 channel' thing as well. One station was primarily News, another was Country Music channel and the last was were we would watch Ed Sullivan, Jack Benny, etc.... Yea, those were the times.

One of them cooked this meatloaf two weeks ago at our Smokin' Group's spring fire up get together at Crawford State Park, KS. I live up KC way.

Enjoyed the video as always. Growing up meatloaf was my favorite food. I haven’t ate meatloaf in 40 years. Back in 1980 I ate meatloaf at a restaurant and became sick with food poisoning. It was on a Friday and I should have known better because the restaurant probably had some hamburger meat trying to go bad and decided to make a meatloaf out of it. I have not been able to eat meatloaf since.

Made this yesterday. I’d already started when I noticed a storm moving in (tornadoes south of us in Mankato). With the aid of a tarp, I made a lean-to over the grill, and got the job done in the rain. I can hardly believe how much the oak smoke adds to the flavor. I used my homemade dark bread crumbs though instead of the Ritz crackers. ANOTHER great recipe, Kent. I think the First Lutheran cookbook has had its day, time for a new favorite. Thanks for sharing. DEE-licious.

This looks so good! I love the taste of peppers and but have gotten such dry dry mouth my tongue is all cracked and can not do any amount of spicy a lot of times I can't even do a tomato because of acid. It's just so sad! But my husband can. He would love this. Just might have to try this out. Also thanks for the tip on peeling those peppers. Very many thanks for that. And hats off to our troops for sure. You know it's not just the ones out on the lines fighting. It's every division of the different services men and women. And the ones at home whose duty it is to go tell of a lost loved one. Oh my! So many different jobs to be done. And they all go hand in hand. It's pretty awesome. And they become their own tight knit families because no one else could ever understand what they have been through. I thank God they have each other. ♥️
