George Carlin: Rights aren't rights if someone can take them away. They're privileges. That's all we've ever had in this country, is a bill of temporary privileges. And if you read the news even badly, you know that every year the list gets shorter and shorter.

WRONG. Your rights can be denied and suppressed, but they are still your natural rights, given to you by Father God and/or Mother Nature (depending on your personal belief system). MLK fought for his natural rights, and the rights of others too. He didn't just succumb to fatalism and give up and say, "oh well, there goes my privileges!"

What's happening in Florida right now to their Orange county residents is a dam shame. The dictator wannabe has signed a handful of bills that will cost Florida 86,000 jobs and 1 of 2 of Americas premiere attractions that brings Florida billions in revenue will ALL GO BYE BYE. Thought Repubs were against BIG Government in their lives. Looks like that once proud tradition of keeping the checks n balances in place by always rallying against big Government, have now realized they can just use BIG GOVERNMENT to suppress 1 of only 2 genders created by God and placing their foots on WOMENS THROATS AGAIN. Acting as if the statement the Cultists like to pretend is true when its almost the biggest lie in all of history. It goes like this ... " If A Woman is getting raped , all she has to do is shut down the 👶 maker " 😂 that's the INSANE LOGIC these bozos use for letting the man sluts off the hook & simultaneously PUNISH WOMEN HARSHLY with super long prison sentences just because she has the right to make that choice. Well this was a massively dishonest rant from Bill. He flat out take the actions of small number of moron and paints half the country as supporting them. THAT IS AN OBVIOUS LIE and just flat out engaging in propaganda. Its no different that republicans painting the entire democrat party as BLM rioters. STOP with the lies and distortions against half the country. Bill loses credibility when he pushes this dishonest narrative.
Conservatives wants fair voting like we had since the civil rights era, not mass vote by mail and drop boxes nonsense that suddenly sprung up in 2020 that make illegal activity and voting way too easy and impossible to track or prove. If most people are too lazy to get out and physically cast a vote then they should not be voting. Mail in ballots should be reserved only for special circumstances and done with checks and balances. And NO, we are not a "democracy", we are a constitutional republic that votes state by state and district by district. Understanding that is basic jr high civics that used to be taught in schools up until the last 20 years. The founders NEVER intended a pure democracy becuase its a path to totalitarian socialist states.

My grandparents understood enough to make the trip out to the states for that ideal and opportunity. My father fought in WWII. They understood.

As I see it, our democracy is in serious danger from 1) a largely uninformed and apathetic populace, and 2) serious institutional flaws which seem nearly impossible to rectify, which more and more stack the deck against the rational majority, pull our discourse toward extremes in lieu of free debate and compromise, and enable patently unfit, unqualified individuals be elected to high office.
Regarding the latter - can someone tell me please why there are no apolitical qualifications for holding office? Every other profession has qualifications - I'm sure many of you like me have been made to jump through hoops year after year by institutional bureaucracies to continually prove baseline ability. Just for example, does anyone really believe our former president could have listed the Bill of Rights, or even the branches of government? Seriously, I doubt he could have given so much as the numbers for either category.
Any attempt to restrict voting - even if well-intentioned, say to give more power to informed citizens - could of course lend itself to tremendous abuse. And ideally, this is exactly why it's so vital we take active steps to combat ignorance, and seek to produce a well-informed, civic-minded populace educated in democratic responsibility.
But in the meantime, why do our politicians, whether prospective or incumbent, get a free pass? It is not political bias to demand fundamental knowledge as a foundation for competence in leadership.
(P.S. Thanks to all out there who have used this thread to engage in civil debate and sharing of ideas, as opposed to pointless personal attacks and irrelevant nastiness. It's always great to see people converse online like actual adults!)

Do I think Biden, who has a law degree, and has been a sitting Senator since the early 1970's, not to mention a former vice-president, can prove basic competence, say by knowing the Bill of Rights, and the three branches of government? Yes, I think that's a reasonable assumption, though I'd be happy to put him to the test, provided we treat all other politicians the same.
But if you're implying (?) age alone makes him unqualified, certainly that is a factor worth weighing in all leaders, while at the same time bearing in mind that ageism sadly remains a widely held and accepted prejudice in society.

The problem with our Constitution, IMHO, is that the framers counted on honor and integrity - they believed the checks and balances of 3 branches would be sufficient. Democrats lost in 2016, then spent 4 years screaming and tearing their hair out about it, then over exaggerated the threat of COVID in order to collapse a successful economy (Bill Maher himself said the Dems needed to crash the economy to beat Trump, and they did it 🤷🏼‍♂️) and changed the voting laws to allow any crayon drawing of Biden to be counted as a vote, so there's no need to "imagine" anything, you've already done it

Yeah the dems would never call for such measures when they lose. Abolishing the electoral college? Packing the court? Allowing illegal immigrants to vote? Wouldn't even cross their minds. Let's be real. The only reason the Dems are 'pros democracy' is due to them being confident that the majority is in their corner. Should that ever change - yeah, you *will* hear dems start questioning Democracy. Ditto for Republicans bellyaching about the Supreme Court or electoral College the moment those stop working in their favor.

Uh, Russia has more representative elections than america. If you are referring to the invasion the US has invaded far more countries, and the protest against the Iraq war saw far more people arrested in the US, although mainly because more poeple protested, it was the largest protests in the world. But you are right, the US is becoming closer to the kind of anarchy that exists in Russia. Trump openly talked about wanting to do away with term limits....for him. Thats what Putin did. Putin gave himself more powers, in the US every election has seen the President increase their use of executive orders, which is sort of OPPOSITE to the ideals of democracy. The Swiss president actually has NO authority and is used to only greet visiting dignitaries.
Democracy ALWAYS goes from the bottom up. The growth of ANY democracy would be increasing the use of democratic tools. That happened in about half the states which brought in citizens initiatives after seeing how well they work in Switzerland. What was barely reported in the US was that Utah had a referendum where the people voted to legalize cannabis. The Utah government outrightly rejected their own referendum and refused. THAT is outright fascism, and yet it was never even mentioned in most media.

@@mikearchibald744 democracy requires free and independent press. And you won’t find that in Russia these days. Any non-state-owner media has effectively been shut down or cowed into sticking to the party line. People are being stopped on the street and their phones searched for any “dissident” information. And anyone protesting the war in Ukraine is jailed. Russian kids are being indoctrinated into the cult of Putin. That sounds more like fascism (or Stalinism) and a dictatorship. And yeah, the complacent “non-political” Russian people have allowed this all to get to this point by letting Putin amass so much power and amend their Constitution.
Oh and let’s not forget all those political opponents in Russia that are jailed on trumped-up charges.
I won’t argue that US presidents have grown more powerful over the years. But for all of America’s flaws, political opponents are jailed unless they’ve actually done something illegal (despite a certain former president wanting his political opponent jailed)

You can actually go read RT right now and its fairly similar coverage of the war, even RT has not come out endorsing the invasion and that LITERALLY the russian govenrment. Want to go look at how much of american media was against the invasion of Iraq?
And people get arrested ALL the time in america, are you kiidding me? You need to go over to the filmarchive youtube channel and watch some documentaries. Its not WELL accepted that even as far back as the eighties civil rights leaders were arrested having done NOTHING wrong. There was an FBI strategy for how to infiltrate and criminalize civil rights groups.
These things are all well established. Again, this ISN"T a 'this country is better than that country'. I've never BEEN to Russia but crtainly know what a train wreck it is. But too often americans buy their mainstream media and buy into the "we're the good guys, they're the bad guys".

But there are plenty of Russian expats who can freely criticize the Russian government because they’re not directly threatened by Putin’s state security.
So I guess feel free to dismiss my views on Russia as my personal bias if you want. But there’s a reason Xi has been promoting his own view of Russia and the war. Rachel Hamm, who sounds nutty for other reasons, was suggesting that "hard" equates to requiring citizens to reapply every 8 or 12 years to prove you aren't dead if you want to vote. Loren Culp was pointing out that as a constitutional republic, liberties are protected from mob rule of a true democracy. Anyone with a functioning brain would agree with all three of those full statements if presented honestly, which Bill clearly has no interest in.

Is it really a democracy if the ruling institutions bamboozle a large swatch of the populace to vote in a way they would otherwise not have, had reality not been materially misrepresented. Take the fact that the Hunter Biden laptop truth was not only obscured but a story was fabricated to say Russians linked to Trump were behind it, with the help from media and federal agencies. According to polls, this had a material affect on swing states that resulted in Biden winning. How is that not killing the concept of democracy more than misrepresented tweets?

Most republics are not democracies while most monarchies are. A democracy is the opposite of a dictatorship and a republic is the opposite of a monarchy. One refers to whether the head of state is elected /appointed or hereditary, the other refers to whether the people (demos) have the power (kratos) to set policy.

That, and don't expect anyone to pay attention for more than three minutes.
In short: if you wanna know what conservatives believe, don't ask Bill Maher during election times. Ask a conservative voter, genuinely and with sincere interest to learn their views. Now, as I look forward to casting my precious, precious vote in the next election, I must contemplate how that vote may be overturned or disregarded by a partisan state legislature thanks to mechanisms being put in place to address nonexistent problems posited by people who feel we can ill afford the "luxury" of democracy. I think you need to look at the last election there were several "measures" were put in place by local officials to allow "safe" voting due to the pandemic. Drive up voting, enhanced absentee voting. No ID voting all items put in place by local election officials. Its a balance to regulate voting and keep rights intact. That is where there is disagreement but to characterize a side as against democracy or the republic because they want to establish rules around voting seems to be one sided and disingenuous.

    • @jazzfan6
      @jazzfan6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@MrRjsnowden Let me begin by thanking you for the civility and even-handedness of your reply.
The "measures put in place by local officials" certainly inspired widespread hue and cry over the potential for voter fraud significant enough to alter the outcome of our last presidential election, yet despite multiple audits, court challenges, investigations of specific fraud allegations , etc. (pursued to a heretofore unprecedented degree), no evidence of such widespread voter fraud was ever found. Nonetheless, certain state legislatures pressed ahead with (frequently onerous) "rules around voting" ostensibly intended to address this nonexistent fraud. Guess what? I can live with that, but for one exception: several states have proposed laws that would permit state legislatures to simply disregard the popular vote in presidential elections and substitute their own slate of electors more or less at will. That is 'anti-democratic' in and of itself.

To deny that the Republican Party is not pursuing an anti-democratic agenda at this point is disingenuous or ignorant. They have become traitors and anti-American. All the forms of voting you mentioned required an I.D. before they were registered on the electoral role. In a perfect system federalized system, then everything would be run the government, but because it is a state based system, local officials are audited and subject to oversight and that is how it is.
