      Me too Sandy, my ATC camps included flights in several Hastings, Varsity and Argosy types. RAF Lindholme and RAF Topcliffe . Great days.

    I spent many hours working on the V bomber NBS radar fitted in this Hastings for the purpose of training Radar Navs when it was at Lindholme.The complete NBS gear still seems to be fitted.

    Flew from RAF Fayid in the Canal Zone in Feb 1954 to RAF Lyneham, Wilts. 13 hrs in total ( Plus the obligatory overnight stay in Malta). Rearward facing seats were mandatory in RAF passenger A/C. Mx altitude about 9,000ft, too noisy to hold normal conversation. Very exciting for an 18 yearold Nat Serviceman who had scarcely had a train ride out of Cornwall let alone fly in an aeroplane (lol)

    The dayglo fish on the cockpit side were to signify it had completed a "kipper run" to RAF Machrihanish when it was part of 230 OCU at Scampton known locally as 1066 flight for obvious reasons. They used to bring back 20-30 stone of kippers at a time filling orders from station personnel. Aircraft & crewroom used to stink for a week at least after.

    Does anyone remember the Hastings that stood outside Carlisle Airport way back in the 60's? Me and my friends used to cycle to the airport and secretly climb inside and pretend we were pilots. Also, does anyone remember a Hastings pilot called Flt Lt Yates who was an instructor at 1862 City of Carlisle ATC when they were in the Gallipoli Block at Carlisle Castle?

    Went to Newark museum yesterday...bit disappointing, u can't get near the aircraft anymore. All have steps but roped off.
    Compared to the states where u can even get in some of the flying ones I'm afraid with airshows as well as museums over here they are becoming a bit bland and boring.
    Nice vid and nice to see inside her.

      Heheh. Snap! I flew in one of these back in *my* ATC days, but from Harewood (now Christchurch Airport) to RNZAF Woodbourne, at the top end of the South Island. Ten days later, we flew back.
      It was January 1964 and teams of five had been selected from all the ATC squadrons in New Zealand to attend the inaugural ATC Annual Camp at Dip Flat ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RNZAF_Dip_Flat ). The South Island teams boarded the Hastings at Harewood and we took off, straight into bad weather. We clattered and banged our way up the coast at about 3,000 feet, with thick cloud above us and the Coastal Kaikoura Range hiding in the cloud. We were all issued with sick bags and some of the guys used theirs. I didn't, but it was touch-and-go and we were all very happy to land at Woodbourne.
      The return trip, ten days later, was better, but thick cloud over Harewood meant a missed approach on the first landing attempt and then landing.
      Fun times and I still have my ATC log book and the photos that I took at Dip Flat.

    Why did they make ist as a taildragger ?

    • @gaz11h
      @gaz11h  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question and can honestly say I'm not sure why but as the aircraft was developed in the 40's most military aircraft around at that time were taildraggers like the Lancaster York Dakota to name a few

    I believe that the RAF scrapped all the Hastings aircraft overnight due to a lethal fault in the tail-end controls somewhere. Sone were scrapped where they stood and never made it back to the UK. And lets remember that while Handley Page were proudly producing the Hastings. Lockheed were building the C130. No wonder then that so many British aircraft producers closed down.

    • @mandoprince1

      Hastings was produced from 1947-52. Hercules first flight was two years later. The Hastings had a pretty good record for safety and reliability and were eventually retired due to age and obsolecence in 1977.
